we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write gen fics. we have to thank our brave soldiers in fandom who write character studies and stories with no focus on romance or sex. we have to get on our knees and thank the brave soldiers in fandom who write about minor characters and friendship and family with no focus on romance or sex. i know itâs hard to care about characters in a world that seems to only revolve around ships but i see you. and i love you
hey!!! have you ever wanted to watch an actual Quileute elder talk about Quileute culture, language, and tradition? (as well as his family history, the damage Twilight has done, climate change, and so much more?)
trick question. this is an intervention. even if youâve never wanted that, you do now.

this is a video of Chris Morganroth, a Quileute elder, canoe-builder, language teacher, and a fantastic storyteller. he is wearing a shirt covered in pictures of wolves: his cousin made it for him! this is a recording of a 2012 speech at the Smithsonian. it is about an hour long. it is so worth it.
(big thanks to @twilightphasepodcast, who cited this as a resource in their latest episode, which was how i found it!)
a fic author I greatly admire left kudos and bookmarked some of my own work. I'm just. Gently shaking in place.

they really don't make Bigass Cabinet For Computer anymore. we were at the used furniture warehouse the other day & they had so many. that's the way things should be. lock away that wretched machine when you're done looking at it
Lock That Fucking Thang Up
back in the ancient times when we had tube TVs (before flat-panel TVs) i couldn't be near a TV, on or off, without having my eyes drawn to it
it's like it was a churning maelstrom, it would capture my attention
i think it's because even when off, there was a depth to the darkness that would draw me in
so i learned quickly, cover that shit
used to have a tapestry that was at one point my bedspread and I just tossed it on the TV and presto, no more drawing my eyes in
much later we were setting up a room some would call a "den" and it has built-in bookshelves, and front and center there's a larger cabinet not unlike the above armoire, which fit a massive TV. like, 36", that fucker was huge (honestly though it was huge and it weighed, no kidding, about 230 pounds - 100kg). the doors protected me though!
unfortunately modern TVs came along and the little 55" TV we have now (and almost never watch) still is... at that cabinet; it's on the same roll-out shelf, but it's kinda semi permanently rolled forward because the TV is just a bit too big to fit inside the cabinet
at least the flat screen TV doesn't grab my attention any more; if it did, i'd be back to the tapestry to cover it
TL;DR - throw a cloth over your TV if you don't have a cabinet for it to be hidden in; be more deliberate about watching the "tube"

If you havenât ditched the Amazon-owned Goodreads in favor of the independent, Black-owned StoryGraph, what are you waiting for?
You can import your Goodreads data (so you wonât lose years of book tracking)!
You can get personal recommendations based on your current preferences!
Itâs sleek af!
ITâS NOT OWNED BY AMAZON
Users can apply content warnings so you can avoid triggers before ever opening a specific book
The same applies for âmoodâ! Wanna read something sad? Find books tagged as âsadâ, thatâs literally it
ITâS NOT OWNED BY JEFF BEZOS
Addressing some comments in the tags: Itâs true that the database isnât as vast as Goodreadsâ - yet. The site is much, much newer than Goodreads. But you can actually help them expand!
When you search for a title, you may not find what you need. Then all you have to do is click the handy âCanât find the book youâre looking for?â link, and youâll be taken straight to this page, where you will be able to help them find books to add to their database! If you canât find that non-English book youâre looking for, help them out!
I had no idea it was black-owned! So cool.
Iâve been using StoryGraph for a bit over a year now and I LOVE IT.
Way better review system - you can mark things as quarter stars, you mark moods, slow/medium/fast pace, several things about plot, character, etc.
Tailored searches - you can search by mood as well as set various preferences and then search for matches.
Can add/view content warnings to books - no more skimming reviews and accidentally getting spoilers!
Really interesting and unique reader-created challenges
Tracks more than # of pages/books read - also tracks moods, types of books, length, fast/medium/slow pace, etc.
Also, to address the above comment- it has been about 7 months now since Iâve had to add a book to their database, and Iâve been reading a good mix of old/new/popular/lesser-known/etc. just in the last 3-4 months. The database has grown ENORMOUSLY since StoryGraph first launched and will simply continue to grow the more people use it!

if i could double dutch just once more
or throw one more bottle into the bone ditch
if i could pull back the haze of time
with my bare hands
and reorient the center of my universe
if i could recreate warm summer evenings
and the cold winter days
if i could through sheer force of will
bring back the days long gone
that now only exist in collective memory
how can this truly be past?
when the memories dance in the corner of my vision
when i cannot smell humid summer air
without being sent back in time
when the sweetness of dreams constantly leaks into the light of day
how can this be past?
yet i know our history is dust in the wind
free from being caught, captured
defined
there is much uncertainty when it comes to memory
were the days truly so peaceful?
did the teas truly taste so sweet?
i don't know and i think i never will
but i know we long for those bygone days
having left part of ourselves buried in the front yard
and perhaps i will find you
all of you
waiting there when my time ends
