I've just finished it🙊🤩 I have to process it all first before I write a few words about it. But I have to say two things:
1) I loved every freaking bit of it.
2) In Acknowledgement, Erika promised to go back to Kelsea ... 😲 We're going to get another book 🥳🥰
everyone EXCEPT PEN @ Kelsea
one taught me love 💖, one taught me patience 🤦🏽♀, one taught me pain 💔
just saw a post that said they shipped Kelsea with Mace
MY OPINION (that absolutely no one asked) ABOUT THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING CAST
Recently, i have finished the first book of the trilogy The Queen of the Tearling (a really really good book btw) and i was delighted to learn that a movie was about to be done based on the books.
I was less enthusiastic when i learn that Emma Watson will play the role of Kelsea, the heroine of the books.
DISCLAIMER : I love Emma Watson, she’s one of my favorite personnality. She is a great actress, a beautiful woman and a inspirationnal activist.
So. In the books, the heroine, Kelsea Raleigh, is a young queen who have to rule her kingdom, facing importants humanitarians problems, and having to deal with the threat of the next door kingdom, ruled by a witch.
She is described as a chubby young woman, with thick black hair, a round face and fleshy lips, green eyes and a manly silhouette.
Her apparence is important in the books. She often think about her face and her body, she compares herself to other women, and she think herself as ugly.
So here i pose the problem. Do you recognize Emma Watson in this description? Because i really don’t.
They cast Emma because Kelsea, the heroine, loves books and is quite a feministe and that’s the kind of role people figure Emma in. And i understand. But first, I think an amazing actress like Emma should not be conditionned in a type of character (i’m not saying she is, i’m saying she shouldn’t). And second, I think this kind of character should not be reserved for a certain type of actors.
There is a description of Kelsea, it’s not for nothing. So here is a few actresses that I picture for Kelsea’s figure (this is only my opinion, you have every right to disagree).
FIRST
Here we begin with this beautiful person (i love her voice as much as her face but whatever) : Rachel Miner, that you may know in the role of Meg in the show Supernatural.
She is the first that I thought of while reading. She has this beautiful round face and thick brown hairs that fits perfectly Kelsea, and she has this assured, almost arrogant stature that, i think, would fit Kelsea’s royalty.
Unfortunately she doesn’t have those green eyes so important in the books, but her face is for me the closest of what I imagine Kelsea’s to be.
Anyway here we have my second choice :
I present you Lydia Graham, a beautiful model whose i found the face while wandered on Pinterest. I’ve read she’s also played in Harry Potter the Order of Phœnix, but i couldn’t find which character sorry…
Lool at those STUNNING green eyes, she is gorgeous with thoses thick black hairs. She has a strength and in the same time a fragility that I find perfect for Kelsea. Yet she doesn’t have this round face and chubby/manly silhouette, but she has this wild and indomptable aura i find perfect for Kelsea.
THIIRD ACTRESS
I don’t need to present you the beautiful Ginifer Goodwin, who portrayed Snow White in the show Once Upon a Time.
And i mean, look at the lovely round face, those stunning green eyes, those black hairs. I think she is quite the perfect Kelsea for me!! Her portray of Snow White can convince me that her very charming apparence doesn’t prevent her to have the fierce look the correspond so well to Kelsea.
She maybe doesn’t have this manly silhouette, but a bit of that chubby look that caractérise Kelsea.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST.
Yes yes yes!! You all know her, Maisie Williams, who played Arya Stark in the serie Game of Throne. She is an amazing young actress that i love!!
She has this round face and green eyes, and brown hair (that could be tied black). I think that she can have those kinda manly feathures when she play, and that fits perfectly Kelsea! And she is younger that every other actress cited earlier, closer to the age of the heroine.
So, what do you think about all of that? I am sorry, i couldn’t put all variations of how Kelsea could be portrayed so if you have an idea, please add !
Remember that everyone have it’s own vision of an heroine and that all versions are okay, so if you have a black, asian, indian (or else) actress that represent how you imagine Kelsea, don’t let the thought “she must be white, the author didn’t say she was dark skinned/or anything else” stop you.
Also, you may notice that all the actresses I proposed are beautiful even when I said that the heroine considered herself as “ugly”. So, she thinks herself ugly because she doesn’t have womanly curve, she has common black hair and a round face. But having all of that doesn’t makes you ugly.
So yeah. Hope you enjoy this little out-of-nowhere thing. It’s only my opinion, so if you wanna disagree, feel free.
BONUS POINT : beautiful Emma!
Absolutely agree! As much as I love Emma, she is a terrible choice to portray Kelsea for many reasons but I do understand why she was chosen. Yet I'd love to see someone new, fresh, an unknown face to walk in Kelsea's shoes.
Anyway, there are no news on the subject of the movie adaptation whatsoever, I guess we may see no one to take up the role.
I'm reading Queen of the Tearling for the first time and Kelsea is so badass I love it!! The moment where SHE WAS STABBED AND STILL FINISHED HER CORONATION IS ICONIC!!
SHE IS SO ICONIC I LOVE HER SO MUCH! she’s bleeding to death AND threatening people around her honestly what a power move i’m glad ur enjoying it!!!!!
A welcome return to the Tearling
A welcome return to the Tearling
I loved Erika Johansen’s Tearling trilogy. I thought Kelsea’s growth from unencumbered teen to the protector of her people was as fascinating as it was entertaining. In Beneath the Keep, Ms. Johansen once again brings readers back to the world of the Tearling. This time, however, we find ourselves at a point before Kelsea’s birth, so that we may understand the politics at play behind her hiding…

5 Stars for sure!
“These people are so damned proud of their hatred! Hatred is easy, and lazy to boot. It’s love that demands effort, love that exacts a price from each of us. Love costs; this is its value.”
The Fate of the Tearling is the final book following Kelssa Glynn's progression into a powerful manarch. In her quest to get rid of corruption, she had gained many formidable enemies, including the Red Queen and 'The Orphan'. In order to protect her people, Kelsea makes the decision to surrender herself and her 2 magical sapphires to the Red Queen. The Mace, her most trusted guard, is placed Regent in her stead. But The Mace's utmost loyalty has always lied with Queen, and sitting on a throne whilst his Queen is held captive is something he simply won't put up with. He will not rest until he and his men rescue their sovereign from her prison in Mortmesne.
I AM STILL REELING OVER THIS BOOK! Those of you who know me, are aware that I am simply in love with this trilogy. I think this was the perfect wrap up to a brilliant series. Honestly, I'm still gushing. Bare with me. 😂
Things I absolutely adored:
▪ I LOVE Kelsea, who despite being a fantastical Queem with magical necklaces, still remains one of the most humane female characters I have ever read about. Following her journey from the young and insecure girl in the first book to a powerful monarch by third book is one of the best character developments I have ever seen in a series. Erika Johansen simply excelled in creating a character that will stay with me for the rest of my life ❤
▪ The final third of this book contained some of the most unpredictable, heart-stopping, jaw-dropping plot twists I have ever encountered. INCLUDING THAT GOD DAMN ENDING!
▪ Talking about the ending... I can understand why I a lot of people disliked the ending to this series. Although this ending is definitely harsh (and probably wasn't the kind of happy ending we were expecting) I think it was absolutely essential. The ending broke my heart, and was most definitely bittersweet. And although I was NOT expecting that ending, I really can't see the trilogy finishing in a different way where all the conflict is effectively resolved. As Erika Johansen said in the acknowledgements, 'The Tearling is not an easy world.' So why would you expect an easy ending?
▪ And finally, MY BOII PEN AND THE MACE!!! Urgh, both of these characters are enough to melt my heart (joke, that's not possible, my heart's made of stone 🤷♀️) In all seriousness, watching the Mace and Pen suffer as their Queen is held captive DESTROYED ME! Johansen really helped us feel all their sorrow, and anguish and pain 💔 I just realised I'm really not ready to let this trilogy and the Mace and Pen go 😭 *wipes tears with a tissue*
Things I disliked:
Honestly, I can't think of anything 🤔 Literally, I've been sat here for 10 minutes scanning through my notes and just thinking about this book and I really cannot think of anything I disliked. Wow.
I recommend this to anyone who even slightly wants to pick up this book. If you're a fan of intricate fantasy worlds with lots of political intrigue and beautiful charcetrs that will melt your heart, then definitely add this to your TBR if you haven't already 🖤 Trust me, you will not regret it!
Also, this series does have a LOT of trigger warnings. The second books contain self-harm, rape and domestic abuse. This third book contains themes of child abuse. There might be a few more trigger warnings, these are just a few I can list off the top of my head.

every time someone gets mad at kelsea for being so easily intimidated by other women when she first comes into contact with them or worrying about her appearance i want to SCREAM
of course she’ll be intimidated. she’s 19! barely. and this is literally the first time in all her short life she’s ever actually met anyone let alone interact with them. girl’s barely had time to practice her social graces!! carlin and barty could only teach her so much. it’s not like she could talk to her books and have it teach her how to read other people she’s not familiar with. (not to mention she had a shitty mom)
and no shit she’ll freak out about her appearance. did i mention she’s 19???? literally, unless you’re a cishet white boy, confidence was not at an all-time high at 19, particularly not for someone who’s lived in isolation.
stop getting mad at kelsea for being a 19-year-old, and stop expecting her to be perfect just because she’s a queen and thinking she has to be ~regal~ all the time.
FINALLY someone said it out loud.
I loved that though being the Queen, she still behaved and had fears like a 19 years-old teenager would have. She wasn’t the typical YA novel female protagnist behaving like she was 30 though being half the age. It was a relief to finally have a female protagonist of a young age that, though feeling the pressure of the whole kingdom on her shoulders, she made decisions, feared for future and cared about petty things like appearance the way a girl of her age and her upbringing would.
THE TEARLING SERIES IS SO FUCKIN GOOD WHY ARENT MORE PEOPLE READING THESE ABSOLUTE GEMS
