Emma Watson was our first, and really, our only choice for Belle for a lot of reasons. Her talent, her beauty, her intelligence, and also, you know, Belle represented a real breakthrough in Disney heroines. A strong female, independent character. And Emma Watson is a 21st century, very strong female role model. And I think a lot of people were surprised that she pulled off this great big musical. You know, she hadn’t done one before. - Bill Condon

After making several edits about this book it’s about time I post my first ever review. And what better way to start with this absolute masterpiece. I am obsessed ! I finished this book days ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it nor can I get myself into reading another book.
Here’s my full review:
I should start by saying that I read A Court of Thorns and Roses at the very beginning of the year. I enjoyed it, I read it quite easily and kinda liked it. However as time passed I realised that even though I’d enjoyed it, I wasn’t anticipating the next book in the series. I thought I would read it whenever I’d have time and that’d be good enough.
Little did I know that the Internet would start burning for this book. So I gave in, bought it and started reading it.
Let’s just say this is one of my favourite reads in a long time if not my absolute favourite. I hadn’t felt this way for a book in a long while and this is why.
Character development :
Feyre being the most obvious example. I found that the fact it took her a long time to start recovering from Under the Mountain great. Usually in YA everything goes way too fast. End of the book and you can still see her struggle. However she went from the ‘I want protection and love’ human girl to the ‘I don’t want to be left behind and I want to fight’ Fae female. Also some interesting character development in Tamlin . He may have been over protective in the first book but he’s full on abusive now. Positive or negative it was nice seeing a change in characters that made sense and wasn’t rushed.
Plot points and reveals :
How good it feels to have a plot about action and evil and everything that’s supposed to be a plot instead of having a love story take up the storyline and turn it into a dull romance novel instead of the action packed book you thought you were to read. I loved the whole reveal about the Night Court and Velaris and the Hewn City. It was so well done and unexpected. I loved the bigger plot about the Cauldron and slightly smaller actions building to it like the Weaver, the Summer Court and Bone Carver. Overall it was an action packed book but it also had slower times to explain things and expand the world and plot. Great balance of the two from SJM.
Gentle handling of difficult situations :
I’ve rarely seen a YA book handle such important and traumatic themes as this book. Usually a YA book is about the traumatic theme fully or not at all. It evolves around it and doesn’t deal with it along a bigger plot. It might just be me but I’ve never read (or at least can’t remember) a YA book who’s more driven about action but also took time to talk about mental and physical abuse and who really handled it gently and gave time to its characters to recover. It wasn’t harsh, it was always very respectful and that was amazing.
Badass females and respectful males :
A huge thanks to SJM for finally giving the YA universe truly badass females and respectful males (this can also be applied to the ToG series). Feyre became a real female and I adore the fact that she grew into someone who won’t let others dictate what she can do or not. Amren and Mor are perfect exemple of how you can be badass but also different, badass but also broken and feminine. Badass and in love but then change and grow out of love. And you can be a male and broken but still full of hope. Male and deeply in love but still respectful of the other’s choices no matter what. Male and treating female equally. This was absolutely priceless. And I’m so happy I’ve read this book just for this fact.
Great set of new characters and second characters :
Nesta, Elain, Lucien, Mor, Amren, Cassian and Azriel are so fascinating. There is still so much to discover about them and they’re all so different. I’m enjoying them all. Less of a fan about Keir, the King of Hybern, Tamlin, Jurian and Tarquin so far but it’s just personnal preferences. This book is full of amazing characters who all have a different voice.
The High Lord of the Night Court :
How can I make a review without talking about the main reason I loved it. Rhysand has stolen my heart. He is a very complex character, full of secrets, hopes and kindness. He isn’t your typical love interest or bad guy turned good. He is genuinely good. His respect towards Feyre, Mor and Amren makes me swoon. The fact that he is for training Illyrian female warriors makes me so happy. He sees females as his equals and that’s just won my heart over and over again. He is open minded and he cares. His closest friends are all very complex people with hard history. He loves them even more for that. He is respectful towards everyone. He is selfless and caring and “human”. I don’t have words to describe him. He has made it to the top of my list of favourite characters. Male and female combined. Rhysand is everything I was missing in YA. He doesn’t need to be bad or betray to be interesting. He is profoundly genuine and I love it.
