agot; chapter xxvi, jon iv
i have a post somewhere in my first liveblog about how gilly's perpetual listless misery after she is separated from her baby is seen as particularly disturbing and uncouth by everyone around her because she is making her grief too obvious. it is specifically against westerosi culture to identify yourself as scared or sad or alone. it's a theme with sam ofc, who people just see as being outwardly pathetic, but also very strongely a theme with theon who is so visibly tortured and broken, and then with jeyne who cannot stop weeping, and with gilly. when people are hurt in westeros that is one thing, but when people are too obvious about their hurts that is another. even if someone is not blamed for being harmed, they are blamed for being too obvious about the harm that was caused them.
it sort of goes directly against the famous tyrionism:
agot; chapter v, jon i
if knowing what you are involves acknowledging how badly you've been hurt, no amount of owning up to it will earn you anything but scorn
to me this is a westerosi social convention that is separate from how poorly they treat people with visible physical disabilities. it's not a judgement on who you are inherently (a dwarf, a bastard, a cripple, etc.) it's a judgement on... a judgment on what is regarded as "wallowing". indulging too deeply in your own hurt. shamefully bringing your hurt to the awareness of others rather than stuffing it down.
it highlights to me how much of westerosi social convention is based on purposeful performance. which is also interesting because this is something that sansa becomes very good at for her own protection, and something she is rewarded for in-universe (it helps her hold on to what little safety is afforded her) and something she is openly reviled for in fandom
found a bunch of instances in agot; chapter 29, sansa ii of sansa adjusting her own internal monologue to match not what she truly feels but what she is expected to feel as a noblewoman
first, sansa logics out her own disassociation/trauma response as a sign of her good breeding. she is saddened by watching the young knight die, impaled on gregor's lance, but she is not overtly emotional. she initially points to her calm, measured response as a sign of her good breeding, but then admits that she thinks she has used up all her sadness in mourning for lady and bran.
i have an old post from my previous liveblog where i talk about this same excerpt in terms of sansa and jeyne's class divide, and i think i have a better understanding of it, now, in terms of westerosi expectations of behavior regarding surpressing negative emotions, not just in sansa's feeling of separation from jeyne and from tourney knights as a noble lady.
then, we see that sansa is incredibly perceptive about the people around her.
she sees through littlefinger's smile.
she sees through moonboy's reputation as a simpleton.
she even catches joffrey's own disassociative response to his father's violent outburst.
so we can see very clearly that sansa is empathetic and perceptive. she sees the truth that other people may not notice. and yet she purposefully turns away from it. she adjusts her own internal dialogue to reflect, not her true feelings, but what a lady would be expected to feel in this situation.
^ clearest example here is sansa retraining herself not to hate joffrey, but to hate cersei and arya instead. hating two women in her household is safe. is socially acceptable. is something she can deal with. hating her betrothed? prince of the seven kingdoms? the best possible marital match she could ever hope to have? the prince of her dreams? not something sansa can deal with. not something she has a social script for. not something she is going to feel.
this noblewoman's courtesy of aversion and avoidance is spelled out most clearly and also strained most severely by sansa's interactions with the hound:
and much like her baby sister arya is taught to look AND to see, sansa here is forced to look AND to see, rather than to look without seeing (like she will do later on with ned's tared head on a spike)

it is actually so pivotal that sansa and sandor’s paths diverged after the blackwater. sansa triggered his redemption arc, but he is walking through it on his own. she doesn’t need to fix him or make him a better man, she simply is a good and kind person and that, her mere existence, inspires a change in him.

random asoiaf social media headcanons:
dany would make those left wing politics/pet grooming videos on tiktok. think like "come trim my bearded dragons nails while we talk about what's happenning in meeren right now" she actulaly studies international politics and has experience with activism so the videos are genuinely informative but she still gets canceled multiple times for, amongst other things: coming from a rich family, abusing her exotic pets (she takes really good care of them) and having a weird boyfriend (more than once).
ramsay kinda blows up on tiktok for making weird and off-putting videos showing his torture basement and bone collection or some shit. everyone thinks it's an elaborate bit but then someone clocks one of his bones as an actual human tibia and people start investigating him on tiktok until the police gets involved. turns out he was an actual serial killer and straight up keeping a girl trapped in his basement. true crime girlies go absolutely nuts over his case and if you open tiktok right now you will see at least 5 different videos talking about it with that fuckass creepy music sound.
myranda royce makes those water mixing tiktoks (you know the ones people put a bunch of random syrups and like red bull in their water to make it "taste good" to the point it can barely be considered water anymore?) while talking about REAL LIFE GOSSIP without bothering to change any names. the only reason she hasn't gotten in trouble for that yet is because she is god's favourite.
jaime makes work out instagram reels on his local gym that are actually barely disguised thirst traps. brienne goes to the same gym as him and gets endlessly annoyed by his bullshit because all his "training advice" is fucking terrible and "uhm some people are ACTUALLY trying to work out here mr. prince charming so if you could PLEASE do this somewhere else I think we would ALL apreciate it" so he starts including her in his videos so she can give some actual work out tips while he just flexes his muscles and tries to look sexy in the background. 99% of his followers are gay men (but he starts getting some queer girls after brienne starts showing up).
I've already talked about cersei being a right-wing grifter/complete menace online but I think that would lead her to becoming this sort of problematic gay icon because she suffers from donald trump disease (simultaneously the worst and funniest person on planet earth). her insane remarks combined with astronomical levels of slay factor turn her into a stan twitter meme (think like a karla sofía gascón or trisha paytas hybrid monster) and she amassess a huge "ironic" following composed of people trying to goad her into (another) mental break down on instagram live and lesbians who are convinced they could fix her if she would just give them a chance (they could NOT). people make thinkpieces on twitter about how you shouldn't interect with her even as a joke because she's clearly a VERY mentally ill woman who thrives on attention but it's no use she's simply too slay to be ignored by the gays.
varys is just deuxmoi.
Modern Starks yearly vacation but it's just the camping trip from hell
-
Ned, Cat, Robb, Theon, Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon are crammed piled in the luxury suv
Jon, Benjen, and the giant wolfdogs are all piled into Benjen's truck with the camping supplies
Arya wants to ride with Jon, but Jon and Theon aren't allowed to ride in the same vehicle for more than a half hour after an incident that involved a cracked windshield, a black eye, a bruised rib and a trip to urgent care, and there's no room left in the truck
Sansa is texting her friends about how awful this trip is. Rickon is loudly playing on his iPad because he doesn't like headphones. Bran and Arya are playing the license plate game and arguing over the other cheating. Robb and Theon are talking about things that are very inappropriate for a family care ride and getting scolded by Catelyn every so often. Ned is stressing out because the GPS is telling him one thing and Cat is telling him another
Benjen is listening to Jon complain about how it's unfair that he got suspended for throwing a basketball at his gym teacher coach Alliser hard enough to break his nose when he was picking on Jon's friends. Benjen silently agrees but he can't say that out loud to his 15 year old nephew. They're both downing Monster energy drinks like it's beer
Group bathroom breaks that include trying to keep 7 kids and 6 giant dogs from wandering off. They always wander off
Bran and Arya are racing down the sidewalks on Bran's wheelchair while Summer and Nymeria chase them. Robb is fishing Grey Wind out of a puddle that he rolled in and is desperately trying to dry him off with bathroom paper towels before Benjen sees. Sansa is browsing the gift shop for something that she and Lady can wear to match. Jon and Theon are kicking the vending machine while fighting over who broke it when it ate their money. Ghost is babysitting Rickon and Shaggydog while they roll around in the grass
Ned and Benjen are trying to wrangle them all before Catelyn gets back from the bathroom and everyone gets in trouble
The kids somehow turn unloading the vehicles into a highly competitive competition
Catelyn sets everyone to task with sitting up the campsite which she runs like the Navy. Efficiently, but with no mercy
Sansa, Arya and Bran technically all share a tent, but Arya almost always ends up in Jon and Benjen's tent once she and Sansa start fighting. Sometimes Sansa leaves to go to Ned and Cat's tent when Bran and Arya start scaring her with ghost stories
Robb and Theon stay up most of the night in their tent gossiping and telling bad jokes like middle schoolers until someone comes to tell them to go to bed
Rickon shares Ned and Cat's tent, and Shaggy keeps nearly smothering Ned to death in his sleep even though shaggy is supposed to sleep outside
The hike is a nightmare. And Cat and Bran are the only ones taking it seriously. Ned and Benjen keep bickering over directions. Sansa keeps stopping to take selfies and pictures of Lady for her Instagram. Rickon has to have the baby leash after trying to run after a squirrel with the dogs
Arya is running off to pick flowers for Ned and ends up giving him poison oak, but it's okay because they packed medicine because this has happened before. Robb, Theon, and Jon are daring each other to do increasingly more dangerous stunts, I.e do a handstand on that boulder, climb that big tree, do a backflip off this giant ledge into the lake below
ned, arya, jon and benjen faces #to me !! lord please bring our family back together
