So my knitting of the pokeball hat using the bottom up ribbed knit beanie pattern and I fear I messed up. I was going to push through and just finish it but I just can’t. Luckily I grabbed some actually white yarn my last Michael’s visit so I might retry it another time. I did make a different hat without a pattern.

I’ve been gone for so long but I return with food. I don’t think I have been doing too hot but I do have things to look forward to next year so that’s always good. I do plan to post more art again! Currently I’m knitting a pokeball hat! I do have things I want to work on so if I do hold up my end I will be at least posting those attempts. I’m super happy I found these, the 10th anniversary one was from eBay and the other two I got from CDJapan!

It has been hard for me to talk about how what is going on with Israel and Palestine is affecting me personally, but I grew up in Gaza and most of my family still lives there. My father did not survive the bombings last week and I have not been able to contact my younger sister in days. I am try to being understanding that most people do not have personal connections to what is happening and therefore are justifying their silence, but is heartbreaking to see this misinformation being spread. What’s happening there is a genocide, not a war. It is not antisemitic to support Palestine, it’s not even antiemetic to criticise Israel. There is no grey area or neutrality regarding this, and it is so easy to find resources that will educate you on the subject. It is my people and my home being destroyed so I will never be silent about this, but I please urge everyone to get informed and start speaking up and finding ways they can help.

STOP USING PASSIVE VOICE

Don't get me wrong, it's useful sometimes, but so many people lean on it without realizing and it makes the writing so much flatter.

What is passive voice?

Whenever there is no known subject of the sentence - only the direct or indirect object.

What's this look like?

"The door was opened" - sure, but WHO opened the door?

If you don't want to say who opened the door (which is super valid, its very dynamic to leave the unknown until the next sentence), MAKE the DOOR the SUBJECT.

Try out something like "The door slammed open" or "The door creaked open". Isn't that so much better? So much more evocative?

Tips?

Here's a quick trick for identifying passive voice: If you can insert the phrase 'by zombies' after your sentence and have it make sense, it's probably in passive voice. Not foolproof, but a good tool.

"The door was opened by zombies" FAILS the passive voice check.

How do we fix that?

Make your writing ACTIVE and DYNAMIC

X - "The hair was brushed from his face"

✓ - "They delicately brushed the hair from his face."

✓ - "Soft hair brushed away from his face."

.

X - "The coffee was drunk."

✓ - "The coffee warmed down her throat"

✓ - "She drank the coffee."

.

X - "The meal was eaten with vigor"

✓ - "Each member of the house ate the meal with vigor."

✓ - "The meal was eaten with vigor by each member of the house."

✓ - "The meal quickly disappeared, eaten with vigor."

.

ADD that subject, PERSONIFY that noun, ENGAGE with your reader.
