Ryuichi Sakamato & Robin Scott - The Arrangement
The Arrangement 1982, Alfa Records, Japan
A product of Sakamoto's early 80s fascination with English synthpop collaborations, Scott and Sakamoto had teamed up for 1981's 左うでの夢 (Left Handed Dream) and would in 1982 meet again to record The Arrangement, a four-track EP that would be bundled with Left Handed Dream after 1983 as "Mini-LP with English Remixes." Hajime Tachibana would also cover this song in 1983 on his album HM.
Hajime Tachibana - Arrangement
HM 1983, Yen Records, Japan
Former Plastics guitarist and Sakamoto favorite Hajime Tachibana released his sophomore solo work, HM, in 1983. The album, like his previous H, contained live orchestrated (and sax heavy) compositions mimicking a film score, though disjointed and with no apparent continuity (unlike Hosono's early exotica faux-soundtrack work.) This piece, Arrangement, is incidentally a cover of an earlier and rare Sakamoto collaboration with Robin Scott (M) from 1982. As with several YEN Records release, HM was produced by Yukihiro Takahashi.
Van Kaye & Ignit - Cool

The first of William Wiusselink (Wizkopf) and Ignatien and Ed Van Kasteren's two releases as Van Kaye & Ignit on their own label Ding Dong Records and Tapes (also Ding Dong Disks.) Wizkopf and Ed were both previously in The Monomen (1000 Idioten Records.)
Great minimal/punky synth work.
Anne-James Chaton with Alva Noto - Chapitre VIII: Nihon No Tabi

Artist and Author Anne-James Chaton's spoken word in French, English, and Japanese with the minimal electronic composition of Carsten Nicolai (Alva Noto.) One in a long line of Alva Noto collaborations on the Raster-Noton label including Blixa Bargeld (ANBB,) Ryuichi Sakamoto, Olaf Bender, and Ryoji Ikeda (Cyclo). Minimal, tense, and vacillatingly comprehensible.
Daily Fauli - Speed

Scary synthpop from Søren Fauli's only release and bizarre record Fauli Til Dauli. Entirely composed on the cheap Casio VL-1 keyboard. Incredible, genre-defying, and ahead of its time (listen to "Bird")

Les Yeux Inderdits shared this release with Dutch minimal synthesist Das Ding, contributing three songs which would not be found in the full release "Les Yeux Inderdits." Robotic and moody.
Inch Urch (In Church) - Saving Souls

Tom Ellard track from cassette compilation of "kitchen synth" first appeared under In Church moniker, being updated to Inch Urch in later compilations. Really gives a feel for Ellard's compositional style that would break away from the strict post-punk industrial aesthetic of Severed Heads in the early 80s. Bright, poppy, and sickly sweet.
Zglutz - Warts
One Stop Shopping 1981, Terse Tapes, Australia
Richard Fielding track from 1981 under Zglutz moniker. Fielding was one of the original members of Severed Heads having been with the band since the Mr and Mrs No Smoking Sign days. One Stop Shopping was a collection of 3 tapes offered for $6.50 by Australian mag Slug in 1981 featuring the Terse Tapes roster and other Australian underground musicians. Fielding would appear again with Garry Bradbury and the Zglutz Orchestra the same year.
Wet Taxis - Miniamata

Garry Bradbury side project whilst a member of Severed Heads in the first half of the 80s. Album was comprised almost exclusively of microsamples from 1,000 cassettes--with Louis Tillet and Tom Ellard provided synth hooks on a few songs.
Severed Heads - Dressed in Hair
Unknown 1981/1982, (Assumed) Terse Tapes, Australia
This recording is an early version of "Dressed in Air" that would appear on Severed Heads' 1987 release Bad Mood Guy. Much more characteristic cassette industrial sound on this recording than the eventual IDM-esque sound Severed Heads would embody later in the decade. Unmistakably a Tom Ellard composition.
Masami Tsuchiya - Kafka

Track penned by Ryuichi Sakamoto for Masami Tsuchiya's solo release Rice Music. Album includes almost every member of Japan (Steve Jansen, Mick Karn, and Bill Nelson) as well as ubiquitous YMO programmer Hideki Matsutake. Sakamoto contributed many guest tracks to YMO-family and YEN artists during the period, most of which echo the audio aesthetics of his concurrent solo album.
Jun Togawa - Tamahime Sama

Title track from her first solo record, produced by Togawa and Yoshifumi Iio (who had assisted on YMO releases in the early 80s.) More pop-rock oriented than other releases with YEN, such as Guernica and Apogee & Perigee.
Keiichi Ohta - 深海S-O-S
太田螢一の人外大魔境 (Jingai Makyo) 1983, YEN Records, Japan
Guernica lyricist Keiichi Ohta created this album as a further exploration into the style of anachronistic melodramatic orchestral composition pioneered by the group and in particular Koji Ueno. Ueno composed the album with Ohta producing and writing lyrics. Hosono makes an appearance on two tracks contributing vocals, as does Beatniks member Keiichi Suzuki. It's hard to describe this album as particularly engaging for a non-Japanese audience, but is redeemed by Ueno's strange and sophisticated compositional style.
Guernica - Cafe De Psycho
改造への躍動 (Throbbing To The Alteration) 1982, YEN Records, Japan
Dark wartime cabaret band Guernica combined the pompous and self-aware electronic orchestral compositions of Halmens' programmer and synthesist Koji Ueno with Halmens guest vocalist and ex-Idol singer Jun Togawa. Lyrics are provided by Keiichi Ohta, who would collaborate with Ueno on his own surreal period piece 太田螢一の人外大魔境 (Jingai Makyo) in 1983.
Kenji Omura - Seiko Is Always On Time
Spring Is Nearly Here (春がいっぱい) 1981, Alfa Records, Japan
All members of YMO made guest appearances on this 1981 Kenji Omura album, due to Omura's close relationship with the band as their touring guitarist (fresh off of their World Tour in 1980.) YMO would drop the rock sound entirely in 1981 with seminal releases BGM and Technodelic.
This song was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Kenji Omura, with programming by Hideki Matsutake. It bears striking resemblance to Ryuichi Sakamoto's track "Boku Na Kakera" which was released later that year as the first track on Sakamoto's Left Handed Dream (左うでの夢) which was also programmed by Matsutake. The title is a reference to Japanese watch manufacturer Seiko, with whom Sakamoto was already intimate with--having originally penned YMO's 1979 hit "Behind The Mask" for a Seiko watch commercial.
Ryuichi Sakamoto - YOU (End Theme)

Sakamoto composed the themes for NHK's youth-oriented educational talk show YOU which ran from 1982 - 1987. Sakamoto's work for NHK in the 80s was extensive, often serving as an outlet for more straightforward pop arrangements while the composer was putting out more experimental work in his album releases. Sakamoto himself would appear on the show sometimes alongside YMO collaborators Takahashi and Hosono to answer questions about music composition from the crowd.
Koharu Kisaragi - NEO-PLANT
Tokai no Seikatsu 1986, King Records, Japan
Very rare album from poet Koharu Kisaragi, this 1986 track was produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto and is characterized by his mid 80s hip-hop inspired sound (also found in his album Futurista from the same year.) The rest of the album varies greatly in genre and quality and I would characterize it as an oddity. This was Kisaragi's only release outside of the Neo-Plant EP.
