No! No, no, no, no, no! Do you know what this will do? This will make every above-average student choose between being an unpaid, uncredited tutor or an unpaid source of cheating. I have been in group projects in non-ability-segregated classes. I have almost always ended up either doing all the work or being teacher or taskmaster to the other students. This produces results that look good on paper. It does not produce real learning.

Also, yes math tracking sometimes allows kids to gain status. So do varsity sports. Who cares? Allow me some verifiable signal of my abilities, please.

(Sorry for the outrage. Every time I see education proposals, I picture me being born a few years later and having to deal with the results of the proposals. I know, typical mind fallacy, sorry. Needs of the many and whatnot. But I still don’t think this is a good idea, we need to get people who actually know math somehow.)

When I was in high school, the district next to mine did away with tracking, with the explicit goal of turning students into uncredited tutors. “We hope that high-achieving students will serve as role models to their lower-achieving peers.” Besides the obvious issue of holding higher-achieving kids back, it also makes lower-achieving kids feel like shit. You can’t coerce higher performance by comparing kids to their peers.

The only real issue I have with tracking is that it can be difficult to change your track. I don’t think kids should be pigeonholed if they’re slow at first and catch up later. But JESUS CHRIST, forcing everyone into the middle is not a solution.
