Star Trek TOS coloring tutorial
This tutorial will show you how to go from this:
To this:
I got a request to share my psd for the TOS women gifsets I make. Each of the gifs is so different to color that I think a tutorial would be better. This tutorial is only the coloring not how to make a gif. These resource blogs can show you how to do that (x, x, x).
I use Photoshop CS5 to make all my gifs and KMPlayer to cap.
The goal is to enhance the colors already present in your gif. For this gif, magenta is enhanced.
You will have to tweak the adjustment layers for your gif quite a bit if you use this tutorial.
After I’ve resized and sharpened my gif, I add brightness
Brightness: 112
Contrast: -50
Now comes the first selective color layer. This one will only be adjusting white, neutral, and black.
White: (0, 0, 0, 50)
Neutral: (0, 0, 0, 20)
Black: (0, 0, 0, 100)
Place another selective color layer.
Red: (-55, 10, 18, 0)
Yellow: (-100, 0, 0, 0)
Blue: (-100, 100, -100, 100)
Magenta: (-100, 100, -100, 0)
Black: (0, 0, 0, 10)
The magenta background is good but it’s discolored her face quite a bit so I have to fix that. Because she doesn’t move her head very much, this won’t be hard to do.
Use a layer mask to fix her skintone
This white rectangle is your layer mask.
With the layer mask on the second selective color layer selected, I use a black paintbrush to paint over only the skin. It works like an eraser.
Use another selective color layer and repeat the layer mask step to fix her skintone
Magenta (-100, 100, -100)
One final selective color layer
Black (0, 0, 0, 12)
Add curves and it’s done :)
(189, 168) and (47, 44)
I hope you liked my tutorial and find it useful!
