did you ever see the t&b mini side episodes where the heroes go to barnaby and kotetsu's places? and how they not so subtly hinted that kotetsu was starting to be into curly blonde people? and the super unsubtle date set up for him and barnaby?
OMFG YES I DID. (And I have them bookmarked because of course I do.)
So first off LINKS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN THEM:
Side Bunny Special (aka the heroes visit Barnaby’s apartment)
Side Tiger Special (aka the heroes visit Kotetsu’s apartment)
Now the Side Bunny Special is super cute, but let’s talk about the Side Tiger Special because oh my God it’s not even subtle.
This is the opening scene, where Kotetsu is worrying because Barnaby is late for meeting him at his apartment. It’s clearly something Kotetsu’s excited about and has been planning for awhile. Then he hears the doorbell ring, is excited Bunny is here, and THIS IS WHAT THEY CUT TO:
Bottle of champagne and two glasses. Because THAT’S a totally typical thing to have set out for when your friend comes over. And then:
Kotetsu is upset when he realizes Bunny’s brought all of their friends over, because:
He wanted it to be just the two of them.
Also, when all the other heroes comment that they’ve never been over to Kotetsu’s place, Barnaby’s quick to say that he’s been over before:
And Kotetsu’s response is:
Just “after work and stuff.” UH-HUH. You look awfully nervous about your friends knowing that you spend a lot of time with your partner, Kotetsu…
And of course Fire Emblem goes snooping and finds some magazines Kotetsu’s saved:
HM WOW KOTETSU WHY DO YOU HAVE A STACK OF MAGAZINES FEATURING A WOMAN WITH GREEN EYES AND CURLY BLOND HAIR
YOU ARE NOT EVEN REMOTELY SLICK. “Ended up liking her for some reason” uh-huh gee wow I wonder what that reason could be
Also, you are correct, the producers absolutely intended to show that Kotetsu’s favorite actress looks like Barnaby. (Just do a ctrl-f for “side Tiger special” on that page.)
(And jeez, I can’t get over that look on Fire Emblem’s face while Kotetsu’s stammering out an explanation; he knows.)
Literally there’s no heterosexual explanation for anything that’s happened in this short and I’m not even a minute and a half into it.
And I can’t actually go much further into it, because it gets a bit spoilery for the series, but you don’t really need to see much more to see that, no, there is absolutely nothing subtle in this 3.5 minutes of animation and it gives me life.
God bless this series, honestly.
