TARSAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is like #carpaltunnelsyndrome if the ankle. The tibial nerve sits on the inside of the ankle and provides a large majority of sensation and muscle innervation to the foot.

It's been a while since I've seen tarsal tunnel syndrome severe enough to damage the nerve. After I found this with #EMG, I decided to localize this with ultrasound. This is an #ultrasound picture of the tibial nerve getting pinched (pic 1) from what I presume is an enlarged vein or scar tissue. Pic 2 is of the other tibial nerve. Note the difference!

Who is interpreting the results with the patient in front of them is what matters! However, if you don't know how to interpret the results don't scare the patient.

It's subtle but notice the difference in the amount of movement when comparing the uninjured (right) to the injured (left) side.

Pregnancy Results in  Lasting Changes in Knee Joint Laxity

Very interesting study! Joint laxity is known in #pregnancy but not to what degree. These authors followed mom's from their first trimester into their 5th month post-partum. They hypothesized they would find global laxity. 

However they found that joint laxity INCREASED in some directions but DECREASED in others. The concern is that laxity may contribute to pain and joint degeneration.

More research like this needs to happen to keep moms active!

Combined Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine - MOVE Sports and Spine

I'm always looking for alternatives. #NSAIDs like #ibuprofen, #Naproxen, and #Celebrex work well for pain but are NEVER a good long term solution.

This study from 2016 shows that glucosamine PLUS chondroitin is as effective as Celebrex for knee #arthritis. The side effect potential is also significantly better compared to any NSAID.

One thing to keep in mind is the supplement industry is not as regulated here in the US compared to the rest of the world. So where you get your product does matter.

The Grim Reaper Only Finds What It Can Catch! - MOVE Sports and Spine

I posted this video (or see below) after I came across one of my favorite articles. This study by de Britto et. al. looked at people (51–80 yo) who could perform this movement (sitting rising test) from the floor without losing balance or needing support. They found those who could complete this movement tended to live longer compared to those who could not!
