personally i think variks is your very average elder. he means well and at times he's definitely going to be out of the loop and wrong about things when bringing up the past (i.e referring to crow with uldren's titles despite him no longer wanting to be associated with that part of his past life, etc etc), but he's also going to be doing a lot of good by doing so at times (such as here. personally i think spider SHOULD be reminded of the person he used to be, even if it's painful and humiliating to look back on at first. in this case, it's appropriate). both crow and spider have lives that they've left, crow for the best more than spider.

variks being as old as he is and knowing what he's lost, he's always looking back- in a way, it might be projection, but he also knows that there's wisdom and value in the past. who you were may amount to who you could be now in both a good and bad sense. through being able to recall, he longs for the traditions and food of riis. spider is not the only example of someone who was good who's turned to a terrible life (eramis was once a friend of his, a much, much older one from his days on riis). he knows time changes things and people.

he's done things for power opportunity as well- bad things. i think in that respect he's fond of crow because he's bettered his life, he wants to try with spider because he knows well who he was, and i think he still has a little bit of hope for his old friend eramis- not much, though i'll bet eido may change that.

anyways!!! i rly rambled here, sorry. my point is that he's a living archive being the scribe and fossil that he is, but there's still plenty of blank pages for him to catalogue new things.
