After seeing both of their pasts and where they’re coming from, this image really hits home. They were both indirect victims of the same war that ruined both of their lives. They both struggle to find their own identity and weigh on the costs and benefits of pretending to be someone they are not. The first time I looked at this cover, I didn’t notice the ankle manacle.

The bones in the yard are either Yoshitaka or Kabayama. Since Kabayama planned on joining the Yakuza, he probably kept coming after Kusumi and Yoshitaka. Both Yoshitaka and Kusumi would have wanted to keep that on the downlow from the law to avoid repercussions from the gang. The bones are bleached and seem older than Yoshitaka has been missing. (I’m just making a guess though. I don’t actually know anything about decomposition, especially in Japan’s climate. It’s not a subject I care to research either, as it’s way beyond my comfort zone.)

I think Kusumi would have treated Yoshitaka’s remains far more respectfully and possibly tried to explain himself to Hata and the others if there had been a simple accident, or he simply found his friend dead in his room and he wanted to keep his promise to help his old friend stay anonymous and simply disappear. But I still feel like Kusumi would have done something special for Yoshitaka, like making a memory shrine for him, unless they had a big falling out and that led to accidental manslaughter or him falling and getting a fatal injury. But even then, I don’t feel like Kusumi would have panic buried him in his own yard.

This feels more like a hasty burial made by panicking kids (maybe Micchan helped?), and time would eventually erode the soil enough to make the remains visible.

I think now that Kusumi no longer has to protect anyone from the past (especially Micchan), he’s finally free to release the truth about him, Yoshitaka, Micchan, and Kabayama. He and Hata were both wrong in how they handled so many things, but for the first time in his life, Kusumi doesn’t have to be someone else’s servant now. It’ll be interesting to see how all this ties together and closes.
