She pouted, wanting to back away from his scythe but not wanting to show any sign of weakness in front of him. “Of course, silly me. Here I was assuming that reapers could grasp the concept of being civil. All your kind cares about is attacking and starving demons who otherwise have no problem with you.”
This soul would not be worth getting into a conflict over, and she had now decided to take the first opportunity she saw and flee. “Come on, just let me have one soul? Some of them are destined to go to Hell anyway, so surely it would only be right for me to escort them down there.”
William scoffed. “Look at it this way, if you’re so intent on playing innocent - why should we treat your kind with civility? All you do is thoughtlessly devour the souls of mortals, denying them the chance at a proper period of judgment. Surely you see why reapers would prefer to let you starve? Oh, and need I remind you that demons are just as likely to combat reapers as reapers are to combat them, so don’t start that nonsense about having no problem with me.”
However, it was when she tried to bargain with him that he felt himself becoming truly exasperated. “If that’s your logic, might I propose you go back to the Hell you came from, find the souls that are already sentenced to an eternal damnation within your home, and eat those? You get your food, I get to do my job, and only souls that have already been chosen for punishment actually get punished.”
“Actually, why don’t you go back to wherever you came from and brush up on your research. Not all demons are interested in fighting you. For example, I am a succubus, a demon of Lust. I don’t want to to fight, I’m just after a night of fun or a soul. However, if you were to come across a demon of Wrath or possibly Envy, they would have no problem with conflict. Try doing your homework before trying that argument with me, reaper.”
Delilah could also feel herself becoming rapidly irritated with this conversation, and she tried explaining herself again. “I can’t eat the souls down in Hell. If I could do that, do you really think that I’d be here wasting my time arguing with you? That’s like asking an angel to purify the souls up in Heaven. That’s not how it works.”
“Did I say you, specifically, were looking for a fight? No, I didn’t,” William spat, voice almost a hiss by this point. “I merely informed you - since you seemed unaware of this fact - that it’s foolish to say that demons have no problem with reapers. And why wouldn’t I assume the worst of you in the first place anyway, succubus or not? I seldom meet demons that don’t get involved in fights with my kind.”
For some reason, the fact that they were both so aggravated made him feel somewhat better - although he couldn’t really fathom why. “Yes, of course that’s not how it works,” he said, barely resisting the urge to press a hand to his temples in aggravation. “I was merely pointing out a flaw in your logic - if your reason for devouring a soul was to escort it to Hell, then it makes no sense for you to eat them at random, now does it? In fact, I could also have suggested that you drag a soul up from Hell and eat it, since that would be sending it back again, with no harm to anyone.”
His voice was dripping with sarcasm.
"I'll admit that some demons are more aggressive than I, but we are not the ones who start the fights. You reapers are always so rude and confrontational, it's really no wonder that we lash out when you keep goading us. Take this meeting as an example. I was calmly waiting in an alley, minding my own business, when you had to come and start demanding that I show myself."
Delilah noticed his aggravation and sarcasm, and instead of letting her own irritation rise she decided to throw in some sarcasm of her own.
"Why, thank you, reaper!Dragging the souls of murderers, abusers, and other criminals back up to the world of the living just so they can be devoured again? Sounds like a great plan to me! There's no way that could go wrong at all."
