Camp Gallery presents The Cabin By Swarm and Zuzu Knew July 5 – 29, 2016

The Cabin is a place of magic between night and day; the walls are made of sky where abnormal frilly flora and sugary plant life grow. You may be lucky to find portals open leading into other realms or a wishing pool to tell a secret. Cozy corners and lacy spider webs welcome you. This installation is the first collab between Swarm and Zu.

Le Chalet est un lieu de magie niché entre la nuit et le jour; les murs sont faits de ciel où poussent une flore à franfreluches anormale et autres végétaux sucrés. Vous pouvez avoir la chance de trouver des portails s’ouvrant sur d'autres domaines ou bien une fontaine à souhait pret à écouter tes secret Des cachettes confortables et des toiles d'araignées en dentelle attendent de vous accueir. Cette installation est la première collaboration entre Swarm et Zu.

About the artists / À propos des artistes: 

Zuzu Knew is a multidisciplinary artist. Her work surfaces creatures known as Fluffs who make the solitary banal into a surreal, friendship club. Zu lives to embellish  people with costumes and change their very notions of self and expand them into characters of their own folklore. Her installations are environments combining magic realism and a cryptic candy land. She believes that handmade and analog technologies are necessary and a delicious part of her aesthetic. Her collaborations with Syngja have been ongoing since 2010 and will reach new heights in 2017 with residencies at Studio 303 in Montreal and ArtsIceland in Ísafjörður, Iceland.

Zuzu Knew est une artiste multidisciplinaire. A travers ses projets, des créatures <<Fluffs>> s’animent et transforment la solitude banale en club d’amitié surréaliste. Zu vit pour embellir les gens avec des costumes, de changer leurs notions mêmes de soi et de les faire croître en personnages de leur propre univers fantastique. Ses installations sont des milieux combinant le réalisme magique et un pays des bonbons cryptique. Elle croit que les technologies fait à la main et ses analog le délicieux élément central de son esthétique. Ses collaborations avec Syngja datent depuis 2010 et atteindront de nouveaux sommets en 2017 lors des résidences au Studio 303 (à Montréal) et au ArtsIceland (à Ísafjörður, Islande). Swarm is a multidisciplinary artist with a strong focus on street art. Her work is heavily influenced by naturally occurring patterns throughout all levels of the universe. Swarm uses these patterns, and those that she derives from them, to convey a deep understanding and appreciation of ‘nature’; a word that is watered down in today’s society. In her work Swarm celebrates the universe and also tries to spread the message that nature is not only worth celebrating but also worth protecting. For Swarm, her work is a journey of unlearning what she has been taught by settler-colonial society and applying this to her practice and her daily life.

Swarm est une artiste multidisciplinaire qui met un accent prononcé sur le street art. Son travail est fortement influencée par les modèles d'origine naturelle se reproduisant à tous les niveaux de l'univers. Swarm utilise ces motifs, et ceux qui en découlent, de transmettre une compréhension profonde et une appreciation sincère de la «nature»; une force rendue impuissante dans la société d'aujourd'hui. Dans son travail Swarm célèbre l'univers et essaie de répandre le message que la nature vaut non seulement la peine d’être fêtée, mais aussi d’être protégée. Pour Swarm, son travail est un voyage de << désapprentissage >> de ce qu'elle a été enseignée par la société coloniale et une pratique quotidienne de ce qu’elle s’enseigne.

SUNDAY - TRANS FEMINIST & GENDER FEELS CONFERENCE DAY

- 12 to 2: Non-Binary brunch/potluck: Reserved for non-binary identified people, this brunch discussion aims to meet each other, share stories, vent, and build a network of support. Bring some food, we will serve coffee, tea and snacks. We will talk about various topics according to the interest of the people present: how we navigate our identity within different aspects our life (family, work, school, interactions with strangers, dating, etc). If you bring food please bring a list of ingredients in case of allergies. No one will be judeged or excluded because of their presentation. Hosted by Noé Larose, Billy Starfield & Root Feelldz. - 2 to 4: Radical & soft masculinity skillshare & workshop: discussion around creating support between cis, trans and nb masc people in healing ways! Structure: free-form discussion around strategies and experiences of dismanteling toxic masculinity, re-imagining soft/radical masculinity while being mindful of appropriation, space and perpetuation of systemic patterns. This workshop is open for masc identified people (cis, trans & non-binary). No one will be judged on their presentation. Hosted by Root Feeldz. - 4 to 7: L'échec des féminismes contemporains par Caroline Trottier Gascon Le féminisme contemporain échoue dans son projet de changement social à cause son ancrage théorique, historique et politique dans les seules expériences des personnes assignées femmes (tant les femmes cis que les hommes trans et certaines personnes non binaires), au détriment notamment des femmes trans. Pourtant, l’expérience de la transmisogynie, qui place les femmes trans en marge de la société comme cibles tant de la misogynie que de la normativité de genre, ainsi que les expertises qui sont développées par les femmes trans à partir de leur point de vue situé particulier, sont absolument nécessaires pour une pleine compréhension des mécanismes d’oppression du genre. La simple inclusion superficielle de femmes trans à l’intérieur de mouvements féministes inchangés, fréquemment pratiquée par les regroupements féministes, ne saurait suffire à accommoder le défi radical des expertises transféministes.

Contre l’ambition du féminisme queer et du féminisme intersectionnel de coopter les expériences trans sans pour autant radicalement modifier les fondements de leur action, je proposerai le projet d’un transféminisme, fondé sur les expériences des femmes trans tout en puisant certaines inspirations dans les féminismes assignés-femme, qui permettra réellement un projet collectif contre toutes les oppressions genrées.

What happens when art and activism go to Camp? Is the work more daring and open when displaced into a collectively ephemeral state? Can serious action and ideas emerge from the light-hearted spirit of a camp-inspired setting? It is these ideas that we will explore at Camp, our month-long pop-up event hosted in the heart of the Montreal summer heat.

Starchild Stela (right) is a multidisciplinary artist and writer who’s mostly known for their street artworks and graffiti adorning feminist messages. Building on their personal experience, their current work explores the merging of gender identity, queerness, emotionality, trauma, and softness. They are very fond of community work, pastel tones and magical moments.

Laurence Philomene (left) is a queer photographer and curator from Montreal, Canada. She makes colourful work dealing with identity, femininity, and softness. Her work seeks to soothe rather than provoke and has been published and exhibited internationally.

Ambivalently Yours (center) is a multidisciplinary artist who explores ambivalence - simultaneously loving and hating – by sharing pink illustrations, short animations, questionable advice, sound sketches, blog posts and anonymous notes left in public spaces. Her work has been exhibited in North America, Europe and Australia, shared virally on the Internet and featured prominently in online media publications, teenage blogs and zines worldwide.

This July, artists Starchild Stela, Laurence Philomène and Ambivalently Yours are hosting a summer-camp inspired pop-up gallery, shop and workshop series in Montreal and you’re all invited! If you can’t make it, please send us your best camp letters, secrets, stories and drawings as postcard art, to be exhibited during the event.

Guidelines: Submissions must be unframed and postcard sized (approximately 6” x 4”), and should be sent to the following address:
