is this italian enough yet
I feel like most tennis players would say when they're down 0-4 to keep giving every game their all because you never know what will happen and then there's taylor fritz who's like yeah just get bageled because then your opponent will freak themselves out and flop
Every time I read that article detailing the abuse, it gets worse and worse. The evidence is overwhelming. The fact that there are people who are willing to deny this is terrifying. I don't usually like using the phrase 'if this was your daughter/sister/mother' because I think your moral compass should be able to recognize horrific instances of abuse and exploitation regardless of whether or not you are personally connected to said situation, but if there is anyone who supports zv*rev who reads this, please, for one second, imagine this happening to someone you know, someone you love. Imagine them trying to inject themselves with insulin to make it stop, imagine them sporting bruises all over their body because someone just tried to choke them, imagine them running out onto the streets into the middle of the night because they're afraid for their life. And imagine them running to you for help and imagine denying it, because that's what the ATP did. And imagine the person who did that to them walking free - winning slams, losing them, whatever - and not rotting in jail. And if you can still justify that, you're a monster, fuck you. We all wish he hadn't won the slam, but that's not the point, even though it makes it undeniably harder to end the glorifying and worshipping. He won today, he will probably win again tomorrow, and he will probably keep winning, because he is a top tennis player. The point, as has been illustrated by multiple people here before me, is that he should not have been playing in the first place. And of course, the fact that this monster will be celebrated and praised makes it extremely important that we remind ourselves of this and we make sure no one forgets. We do what we can with whatever power we hold, even if all you can do is repeatedly say: fuck the system that protects the abusive.
what makes me feel so sick is that there are people who have read through the survivors' interviews, who have seen all the evidence laid out before them, and didn't feel anything for the victims, didn't hesitate to turn a blind eye to it. you can have all the evidence - on camera, on your phone, in the people who verify your experiences - and powerful institutions will still make sure you have no credibility. him winning/losing a slam changes nothing - he belongs in jail, and there is no justice in a few lost matches. however, i feel most for the survivors right now, because it must feel truly hellish to watch the man who drove them to the darkest period of their lives be celebrated for his 'resilience' and his 'tenacity'.
You did your best. And your journey was extraordinary, a final, you're in the top 10, you can really be proud of yourself.
Next time will be the one. Forza! ❤️❤️
and i don't want to hear ever again that assault (in any way) accusations can ruin a man's career
yeah good night. flavio, you did everything you could. all the love to you. the rest doesn't matter.
there is so much more to say, but I just can't today. believe women when they tell you who these men are. we all know he shouldn't be here, not because he can't play, but because a person who abuses women should not be part of the atp tour. he should not be celebrated, regardless of his achievements. period. everything they aren't saying here, it screams. I'm honestly heartbroken, and fucking angry. I'm done, I'm out.
as we come closer to the likely outcome i think i have figured out what i want to say about this. this being zverev winning a slam.
i understand that winning a slam comes with an amount of pedigree within tennis, and it’s an achievement that comes with a lot of publicity and lauding. on this level i understand the frustration with him winning one.
what i dont agree with is the idea that this fundamentally changes anything. zverev is good at tennis, this is not a moral judgement. he has been a serious contender for many years. as much as it feels vindicating to call him a choker, to make fun of him for not winning one- that is ultimately a selfish feeling because it doesn’t serve any purpose. and in some ways directly obfuscates and trivialises the real issue.
obviously, i don’t think making a joke here and there is necessarily wrong, but i do sometimes worry the overwhelming amount of posts treating players beating him like a game is diluting the seriousness. the posts that only ever call him the rat or another nickname, the posts congratulating people for “exterminating him”- i worry these miss the point. he isn’t some funny little issue, he’s a serial domestic abuser. whether or not a player beats him isn’t them doing a favour for women or for viewers who don’t like him, there is no morality in it.
if it’s more important for you to be able to make fun of him for not reaching some arbitrary point of success than it is for him to be recognised and face consequences for being a serial abuser than your priorities are wrong. i don’t actually think anyone is doing this on purpose, but i think it’s easy to get caught up in our own anger, our own desire to feel better short term.
the first allegations came out i believe in 2020, if zverev had won a slam before that it would not have changed the fact that he’s an abuser. if he’d won every slam since it would not change that fact. on the other hand, if he lost every slam first round it would also not change anything. the truth of it though is that he does make deep runs frequently. that’s why he’s been top 5 for so long, and him being top 5 for so long has already made him a face of men’s tennis regardless of his slam success.
no longer being able to say he’s a choker or he’s a slamless loser or whatever insult in that vein you want is not even remotely relevant when the real reason people should be upset is that he is, once again, a serial domestic abuser.
maybe flavio pulls off a miracle and he wins this one, zverev will continue to be a contender in the next and the next and the next. the issue has never been that he might win one, but that he’s able to compete at all.
No one ever say the word deuce again please
