How to help your artists - The circle of influence.

So over the past 10-15 years, as I’ve been trying to branch out, grow a following and sell commissions, there’s one phrase I’ve heard more than any other.

“I’d love to support you, but I have no money.”

And you know, I get that. I understand. I don’t have any either. But here’s the secret. The most powerful and useful thing you can do to support an artist? It doesn’t cost a penny. Reblog their posts, signal boost their commissions, advertise their patreon./ If you have commissioned them, or do support their patreon? Write a review, tell your friends, share their links. Keep circulating the tapes.

Every post is an artist laying themselves bare before you. You have the power to make them into somebody. You can make them into a big name, you can help bring them an income. All you have to do is share.

Here’s a handy infographic.

If artists get only likes, they never get any exposure. They find no followers, they make no money, and feel worthless.

But with reblogs, who knows how far they could reach? New people could see their work and follow them, and maybe one person will spot that commissions post or patreon promo, and maybe offer to help support them. And it didn’t even cost those followers a penny to reblog the post.

So please, anyone out there. If you enjoy an artist’s work and can’t afford to give any monetary support, you can give them something more powerful. A voice.

It's Vocaloid. They used software to make the song, same as we've been using software to make music at home for over two and a half decades. Some modern programs for doing this let you tell the software what to sing, and the vocals are made from a voice bank sourced from paid artists who signed up to make the voice bank because they wanted to. It's not fucking. Autogenerated by chatgpt or something.

I'm pointing this out because "ai" means like sixteen different things and these days if you say something is AI everyone assumes it's autogenerated dross created in the least ethical way they can think of. In this case, it just means they made a cool animation and wrote a cool song and happened to use a voice synthesiser for the song.

Hate to break it to y'all, but this is not, in fact, a vocaloid song. The creator of these videos uses AI and has made multiple posts on their YT community saying they'd be "studying AI more" to use it even more on their videos.

Does it SOUND like a vocaloid? Absolutely. Probably because it's.... Like, an AI of a vocaloid. Which is a slap in the face to vocaloids and vocaloid producers lol.

Hate to see it because the song was super catchy and I love chess so I was happy to see some actually engaging chess content but yeah.

So to be pedantic (because that matters with legal cases) she is not suing him for human trafficking. She is suing him for intensely abusive employment conditions, including underpayment, overwork, harassment during attempts to take breaks or leave the city, psychological torment, and housing conditions which conspired to keep her from leaving, which can very reasonably be said to constitute a degree of human trafficking. But the suit is not specifically pressing trafficking charges.

That said the degree of racist and sexual harassment alleged (from his mom) is horrifying and deserves specific attention.

Actually, I think this is worth emphasizing. While human trafficking charges are not being filed, the allegations absolutely represent a pattern of human trafficking control. Sleep and food deprivation, constant surveillance, economic deprivation, housing control, continuous harassment, all of these are behaviors desgined to keep someone burned out and with no time to make moves to get themself out.

Someone living in a city they're unfamiliar with, with San Francisco's housing market, no time to establish connections with locals, withheld wages and illegal lies about what wages would be coming, who is constantly sleep deprived and hungry, and harassed constantly by their captor who reacts with extreme measures to moves which might let them leave (like taking a trip out of the city), is how not in a position to leave their job. Pedantry is important in legal matters, but we can recognize when something is absolutely being described in allegations and not on a list of charges only for practical reasons of ease of prosecution.
