the "name shaved on back of head" haircut is really funny
ever since i left the city YOU! (powerful shock wave emanates from me and shatters all nearby windows)
I wanted to clarify about the inkfish's blood color? I was told there is a bit in the latest art book confirming they have red blood but i am yet to see a source so i wanted to ask
Gear acquired by our researchers Red Hammertreads Anakki has caught on to the latest trends, and has presented a collection of "looting"-themed footwear. The message of "Take what you want by force!" resonated with the boom of rough and rugged Splatlandian fashion, creating some die-hard fans. The motif of the collection is a gangster octopus, which has turned deep red due to the blood that's risen to its head.** This deep crimson color is symbolic of the collection.
**頭に血が上る means to be agitated or excited, but literally something like "blood to rise to one's head". with all the mentions of dark red, this word choice connecting it to blood was deliberate so i left it in.
Turning red due to agitation in this case might be implying its like a deimatic display rather than literal blood, but regardless that is still a connection of red blood and octopuses.
regardless of if you want to take this as solid proof of inklings/octolings having red blood, there are some other things that hint at them having red blood. like this art showing some inklings with ears and noses tinted red from the cold:
or this concept art for an inkling anatomical model, with the insides tinted red
There's also how the inside of the mouths of the squid sisters is a fleshy pink/red color rather than a color connected to their ink color, but theres some weirdness with how consistent mouth colors are If you're thinking, "but wouldnt it make more sense for them to have blue blood because they're cephalopods?" this is what i thought too. While blue blood is fine for sea dwelling cephalopods to have blue blood, it's inefficient for carrying oxygen for land dwelling creatures. Inklings and octolings took on many adaptations to make them more suited for land, so why not their blood? If the concept of a mollusc evolving from having blue to red blood sounds farfetched, this exact thing has happened to ramshorn snails!
Other option is they literally have ink blood which *shrug* idk they are creatures of Flesh and Organs so Im inclined to believe they have actual blood that, like the organs, we don't see because Family Friendly Game . I mean, we know for sure salmonids have actual flesh and blood (you can literally buy their meat in mako mart) but in game they just kind of explode like ink bags. anyway in short: not explicitly confirmed what kind of blood inklings and octolings have but with the S3 artbook and these few other examples i think red blood is a real possibility.
In the splatoon fanbase, there are many misconceptions surrounding the relationship between inklings and water. without fail whenever I mention something related to the topic I'll get replies of "actually the canon is [some popular but incorrect theory]" "no they can do this and this canonically [it's actually a headcanon]" "no its really [something NOA made up]"
so to briefly go over The Facts:
Inklings canonically die when submerged in water. And yes, getting "splatted" is them dying for real, respawning is also an in-universe thing that has existed for at least 2000 years and not just a game mechanic. While the dying in water thing originally came from a game mechanic, it has been repeatedly stated that they incorporated this into the inkling's biology. The water weakness is not because of the water itself being toxic. The reason is based in osmosis. in the process of their evolution, Inklings (and octolings) changed a lot, and one of these changes was the ability to transform between a humanoid and swim form. Doing this transformation requires skin that is a thin, semi permeable membrane [this kind of skin is a trait found in real life molluscs]. The evolutionary trade off is that, because of how semi permeable their skin is, the ink inside of their bodies will bleed out when in contact with another liquid. This is the answer given directly by the series' creator. Kind of like how a slug will die if you sprinkle salt on it (for a reason that's almost the same as the inklings), but ultimately needs salt in its diet through the food it eats to live, inklings do drink water and other liquids. Its also not like they touch water and immediately explode, it seems they can wash their hands in it and dip their feet in it and be fine. Some people think the water weakness is stupid, personally i think its reasonable because Inkling biology is already weird as hell and of how ridiculously advantageous it is to be an ink-based cephalopod. the ink gives them the ability to jump absurdly long distances and cheat death to an extent. they're not losing much by not being able to dunk themselves in water. Anyway point is it sucks that all the relevant canon information on this is one of those japan only things/exclusive to developer interviews and pretty much every time it's brought up in English the localizers make shit up. I plan to make a video about this one of these days, but with how 'controversial' the topic is, and how many little details and connected concepts there are, I've been holding it off because I want to do it right. there's also some specific details that are unclear that I've been hoping would be clarified in the artbook or a dev interview but haven't, I might just have to go for it at this point. for the time being, i hope this post helps clear up a few things!
on the topic of misconceptions. this change was criminal
thank you NOA for um. spreading the idea that inklings can't drink water
Wait so were the rival octolings mind controlled trough the glasses or not?
nope. Ive gotten quite a few asks about this topic, understandably so! this is something Ive been kind of wanting to talk about in a video in depth, but putting it together cohesively is Hard and i wanna wait for Splatoon 3 to really clear things up with Octavio. anyway, ill try to put the evidence i got in this post. The idea that Octolings all wear mind-controlling eye wear is...basically just deeply rooted fanon. just because Octavio has a special pair for Callie, doesn't mean all Octolings are equipped with the same tech.
look at that. goggles off, she wants it back. (art from the splatoon 1 end credits)
what we know about the Octoling's eyewear is that the red dot on terminator-style shades they wear in s2 is just a UI (i assume to aid them in combat).
The S1 goggles are called something to the effect of 'Octoling Scope' in JP, which i believe implies they assist with aiming. Nothing has been said about their eyewear having mind-controlling properties. Additionally, the Octoling shades and goggles that we players can wear, unlike the agent gear, are not stated to be replicas. One may ask then, what's the deal with the Calamari Inkantation? with Callie being freed from her mind control by the Inkantation, plus lines like this:
its easy to come to the conclusion that it's some mind-control breaking song. While it may have had that kind of effect on Callie, that's not really what the song does. As always, things got changed in localization. here's that above piece of dialogue, retranslated from japanese
Different nuance there, no? The inkantation seems to be more like a song of inspiration and empowerment. it inspires some Octolings, who have spent their militaristic lives living in domes devoid of natural sunlight, to seek out something more. its moreso implied that the Octarians are fed propaganda and militarized from a young age: so the more realistic kind of brainwashing, and not outright scifi mind controlled like callie or agent 3 was. The Octolings in the military don't need goggles to mind-control them into following Octavio: they have a sense of loyalty towards his cause and their own kind. Octavio isnt the greatest guy, but he has a good reason to resent the Inklings: his people were forced underground, and he does what he does (stealing the Zapfish) to try and keep the crumbling Octarian domes, and his people, alive. Seems like a worthy cause to me. Another huge issue with the 'all Octolings have hypnotic eyewear' theory is this: after listening to the Inkantation, if the Octolings were to supposedly become aware that DJ Octavio was straight-up mind controlling them, then you would expect that they would hate his guts. The thing is though...they don't. Because they were never mind controlled. From both Marina and Agent 8, its implied that both of them still hold some respect for DJ Octavio despite leaving the Octarian world. Exhibit A: 8's apologetic mem cake poem about Octavio
Exhibit B: Marina's laptop covered in stickers. theres 3 squid sisters stickers, but alongside that are some Turquoise October stickers and a huge DJ Octavio sticker.
if she really did hate him (which is something she has never expressed), i think she would put more effort into covering up or removing that sticker.
Ok there's my mountain of evidence to disprove the hypnotic eyewear theory! In short: Yes Octavio is controlling the Octarian populace, but only through propaganda and typical military control, and not literal sci-fi mind control.
reblogging this again because i was reminded of the existence of this thread a friend came across of japanese users expressing confusion over why/how overseas fans think octolings are mind controlled
I think the concept behind Grizz is solid: a Former Bear who inadvertently Ship Of Theseus'd himself into Not Being A Bear Anymore ties neatly into the running theme of Judd and Lil Judd being the Only Mammals left: Mr. Grizz, whatever he is now, no longer counts as a mammal. But in execution... Yeah. They should have focused on the "Ship Of Theseus angle" and the fact that, in his attempts to bring back mammals, he's become more like the organisms that he's trying to destroy.
Ive gotten about a good few dozen comments on YT about this exact thing. but half of them being annoyingly condescending in the process for not bringing up this analysis in my Live (keyword live) reaction of me hating on the bear. i dont think ive really addressed how i feel about this particular thing because of how rude ppl were, but its been a while and youre being nice so long post incoming Anyway yes im very much aware of this 'ship of Theseus angle to grizz, I did see that "in defense of grizz" video. And honestly I do agree it is something about him that has interesting potential if they'd leaned into it more. Much of my distaste with the ending of ROTM is the build up and execution. They made the bear foreshadowing laughably obvious years too early, and then all the poor fools like me who care too much about splatoon's story had faith that "surely the splatoon team, who just made a story as surprising and serious as Octo Expansion, wouldn't handle foreshadowing the identity of their next major villain that badly" took the biggest L. IF the splatoon team had been more blatant that the Judds were the last mammals left throughout the series (the only time it was directly stated that all mammals were extinct before ROTM? in a dev interview. and for years nobody wanted to believe it whenever i tried bringing it up lmao.) if they weren't that on the nose about the bear imagery. if the only solid piece of deception they had about Grizz not being a bear in the entirety of splatoon canon wasn't in a paid artbook... if they were more deceptive about the fact, I'm sure i wouldve been a bit more accepting of the idea of him secretly being a bear from earlier on, and it would've been a cooler reveal. But surface level knowledge should be called into question by looking at the deeper evidence, not the other way around.
The ineffectiveness of the bear reveal is a culmination of Splatoon doing a frankly, bad job at putting whats supposed to be basic, important, worldbuilding knowledge in the game. I think the intended effect of the bear reveal was that the general audience of fans were supposed to have been like "woah, but all mammals are supposed to be all dead holy shit i cant believe hes a bear." and that info was supposed to put a wedge in the bear theories. but when 95% of the player-base anticipating splatoon 3 had no idea that all mammals (except the judds) are supposed to be extinct in the splatoon world and how that's an important part of its worldbuilding up until the announcement of the story mode, if at all...idk man thats pretty bad.
The way the info about mammal extinction was worded in the official news posts sounds like it was supposed to be common knowledge for Splatoon fans, not a surprise like it ended up being.
Anyway back to the execution, it would've been cooler if they'd leaned into that horror element, the fact that he's hardly even a mammal anymore. I think the implication is there. It is cool and fucked up in Splatoon's signature way! But again, I agree it would be better if it was played up or even acknowledged once directly, like in log.exe. Even with all the potential for bear Mr. Grizz to be cool, the years of too-blatant foreshadowing leading to a frustratingly disappointing reveal and the exact annoying plot holes i feared of has permanently soured the concept of him being a bear to me.
please don’t even get me started on how upsetting the sudden introduction of Literal Magic was in a sci-fi series set on Our Earth where everything else that seemed magical and impossible was implied to be advanced tech or just silly gameification/cartoon logic... introducing actual real magic is up there as one of the worst things they couldve done id prefer to forget it exists
I always thought I was the odd one out for disliking this but honestly I think it gets overlooked because of the bear. I enjoyed the absurdity of it in the moment (“bear and fish having a kaju fight in space” is nothing if not absurd) HOWEVER it really bothers me in retrospect. Like huh? What? Why?? There’s one secret scroll as foreshadowing that references it as if it’s connected to Deep Cut in some way (which it’s just…not really) and hell, they could probably some pseudoscience bs because it’s Splatoon and my suspension of disbelief is willing to accept splato-udoscience because I’m used to it…but magic? I just think that there’s definitely better reasoning they could’ve come up with. Make it so that smallfry eating all those golden eggs made them super powerful or something. I came up with that off the top of my head and it probably doesn’t make much sense but it makes more sense than actual 100% real not clickbait magic
Thank you for pointing out the hype energy thing because this made me realize
Salmonids can definitely use said “hype energy” (or at least something similar to it) like Horrorboros and their booyah bomb. Considering that the Calimari Inkantation has its whole…thing going on and it seems to transcend species in some way (we even see smallfry hum it) just saying “It’s the power of the Calimari Inkantation” would’ve worked in accordance to previously established lore, made the build up to the moment make sense, and you’d only have to change like 4 lines of dialogue. I don’t know WHY they introduced ACTUAL MAGIC when that explanation is right there.
octo expansion.
My friend was griping at me about how frustrating it was to have to redo the callie boss fight in sp2 story mode five times but i felt absolutely no sympathy because of my experience with inner agent 3.
I realized one thing about the ebb and flow demo is that if you listen to the instrumentals in the background you can hear a lot of samples from turquoise october which iirc is the only music the octarians were able to listen to? it’s just another little tidbit of lore that i just can’t get over oh my godshdhsdh octo expansion is just so good.
fly, octo! fly!
i’ve been drawing SO MUCH recently you guys. and painting... i’m gonna try to post it all soon because much of it is splatoon!

I love this kind of concept art that is entirely unseen in gameplay bit makes the splatooniverse feel like a real world where ink fish live their lives ❤️
OH MY BESTIE
DO YOU WANNA SEE THE TWO-PAGE SPREAD OF CEREAL BRANDS, FROZEN PIZZAS, INSTANT COFFEE, TOILET PAPER, AND LAUNDRY DETERGENT
Y E S
ok here are various toilet paper and detergent brands, and then some cereal boxes, uh cookies i think?, some chips, pretzels, and what i assume to be ziploc bags
this is some signage that i thought was interesting and most of it might have to do with salmon run but think its cool, im still giggling at no swim form allowed like,, ok
these following pics are from the mako mart page
post apocalyptic fruit/veggies
some more toilet paper lmao, what looks like protein powder? some candy, breads, donuts, water bottles,
sardines, popsicles, ramen, slushies, frozen pizza, pancake mix, and off the hook themed ice cream!
cheese and butter. the latter says "organic ink butter" and that scares me. moving on,
more cereal, seeming to range from "healthy whole grain" type stuff to the more sugary ones skfhsjfjs and some coffee boxes
those pages are from the splatoon 2 art book. now these following pages are from haikara walker
this is in a section where they basically just advertised little knicknacks and toys and candy, like when you were a kid and would read those little toy magazines they sent in the mail every christmas that type of thing
here is the full page of the infamous splatoon ring pops
and here is a spread of inklings shopping at mako mart :) no octolings, i checked :(
