I've always tried to articulate exactly what we do and come up with close similariteis ( based on other 3rd party observations ) but I always felt I came close but just a little short of nailing it. No Depression Magazine, The Roots Music Authority since 1995 was in print till 2008 and is has now grown into one of the best communities for indie-alt-country-roots-folk-rock-Americana on the web.

Record Store Day

I worked in record stores all through high school. During the late 70s and early 80s and if you were in NYC you would remember "Crazy Eddie's, his prices were insane" as the TV ad would scream. Music was just transitioning from rock to punk and new wave and you kind of knew what music people were going to buy just from their fashion sensibilities. We also had a Ticketron in the store, where people would wait outside in line for tickets. We'd punch out the ticket's, playing the songs of the act on sale. The Motorhead concerts were always fun, especially since tickets usually went on sale at 9am. We had one headbanger, one punk/new wave guy ( me ) and the the thinking man's rocker ( prog rocker ) on staff. Your record collection was a prized library and a reflection of you. But one of the best things about albums was the artwork. The dream job for me at the time, would have been working for a record label and designing album covers. I don't have many vinyl albums left, but the ones I do were saved for the album artwork. Alice Cooper's School's Out with real panties that cradles the album. One of Todd Rundgren's that has his home studio in chaos in the fold out. The brightly colored Buzzcocks album and one of my fave's Led Zeppelin III with the die cut circles and spinning wheel to change the images. By the time I had started my band everyone was already putting out CDs and creating download files and I holding the first CDs right off the press was an exciting moment. But I wonder how much that excitement would have been multiplied if it was an actual 12 inch disk with full sized artwork and more room to thank people, lyrics to all of the 10 songs and lots of photos. You always had the sleeve to use too. I'm glad that vinyl is still here and that we get to celebrate it. And I am especially grateful for the fan who actually pressed me a one-off album. Now if only I had a record player. Happy record store day.

TEN TON MAN LIVE PERFORMANCE

I realize in this virtual world that many people here on Reverbnation never get a chance to see us live. Well here's a video of us at Arlene's Grocery in NYC hitting the stage with guest Erik Della Penna. This is the first band show were I just play acoustic while Erik swtches off between lap-steel and banjitar for a unique alt-folk twist to Ten Ton Man. Paul Dugan was traveling the globe at the time. We missed him. If you are a Band of Joy fan you should like this, Let me mention that I was a little under the weather, so this night was sponsored by DayQuil and scotch. Enjoy

NEW TEN TON MAN VIDEO - FINE LINE (The Story)

We've just released our new video for Fine Line, a song on our upcoming EP. Shooting a video is always an adventure. You never know what goes on inside the directors mind until quite honestly you see the first cut. And vice versa she was probably not sure what I had expected. Sure you discuss concept, meaning etc. but we are talking about a collaboration. And if your trust and communication is good and you are comfortable, you will have a good idea how on how it'll turn out. The burlesque groove in Fine Line, starring Dirty Martini was the perfect soundtrack for the seduction of excess/addiction metaphor in the video. The fine line of having a good time, taking it to edge or going overboard. The part of the night that goes from a good time to a dangerous encounter. As the song goes " Its a fine line, to a grand time. Its amazing I survived myself, its amazing you did too."

With our first video for The Drinking Song ( and if you haven't checked it out yet, please do ) I had no idea i was actually going to be the lead character until I got on set. I must say a pulled off a pretty good drunk in my first acting engagement. With Fine Line it was nice to take a backseat roll and watch the talent tell the story. They did a great job and its just what I had envisioned and then some, thanks to Corey Tatarczuk our director.
