10 things i’ve learned this year
Even if someone seems completely different from you, you will always have more in common with them than you think. Even if they’re a woman living in a village in China or a 70 year old man running a record store.
Things always turn out better when you let go of your apprehension and just start. Send the email. Write the introduction paragraph. Make the first brushstroke on the canvas.
Philz Coffee is overhyped. Save yourself a half hour of sleep and go to Peet’s.
If you’re feeling stressed out, going for a hike or a run will change everything. It might feel like you’re wasting time for the hour you spend outside, but it is 100% worth it.
The week before any break is always brutal. Always.
If you’re getting in the pool a week before prom, wear sunscreen so you don’t have a bright red burn to match the red flowers on your dress. (That one should have been obvious to me but apparently not)
Leaving problem sets for the night before they are due is really not a good idea.
Make an effort to keep in touch with the people you love but don’t see every day. Those friendships are worth it, even if it means an hour long drive to santa cruz every once in a while.
If there’s a period of time that feels impossibly stressful, remember that no matter what happens, it will pass.
Notice the things you love about your routine along with the things that drive you crazy. Pretty soon, a lot of it will change and you’re going to wish you had appreciated some things more. Why not pay attention to them now?
