Interview with Nick Reinhart of Tera Melos // Line6PODcast
âThis week Jay and Will get looped into a multi-layered conversation with guitarist Nick Reinhart of Tera Melos, and the YouTube channel Pedals and Effects. They talk/argue over which music class was harder to pass, Math-rock or Social-studies rock. Also, Will learns that the band Hella is not the same band as Health.â â Line6PODcast
The modern-prog wizards Tera Melos released their fourth full-length record, Trash Generator, this past August. The recording process brought the trio to Singing Serpent studios in San Diego, California, and marked the first time that the groupâs madman drummer, John Clardy, was present for the entirety of the tracking period since joining them in 2008. Dense grooves, wild accent patterns, and rapid time changes abound throughout the album as the group furthers its signature experimental sound. Here we analyze key moments on Trash Generator and gain insight into some of the tracks from Clardy himself.
âYour Friendsâ
The beginning of this track features a mix of heavy guitar and dense, tom-based grooves. Eventually, however, the song opens into the following 6/4 segment that lightens the feel. âIn this section, the guitar has a really rad chorus sound, and itâs pretty sparse for us,â Cardy says. âSo I wanted to fill things in with the ride cymbal. It mostly follows along with the way the guitar is arpeggiating the chords.â (1:41, 146 bpm)
Shortly after that section, the song takes a wild turn into a barrage of mind-bending accent patterns and shifting time signaturesâparts Clardy needed to shed before recording. âThis part took up a lot of my time for a few monthsâfirst getting the changes down, and then playing it confidently and consistently,â he says. âBecause of all the time that I put into this part, I tracked drums to this song first in the studio, which turned out not to be a good idea.â [laughs] Hereâs a brief taste of the beginning of that section. (2:04, 139 bpm)
âTrash Generatorâ
This song is built around a steady 7/4 structure, but the band incorporates some quirky little phrases that create some interesting breaks from the main groove. âOur bassist, Nathan Latona, and I worked out this post-chorus part to have a kind of âfalling-down-the-stairsâ feeling,â Clardy says. âIt gets really rubbery on the first four hits, but then it rebounds a little with strong accents on the last two hits going back into the beat.â (1:04, 146 bpm)
This second variation features an interesting five-note grouping between the drums and bass. (1:22, 147 bpm)
The song abruptly morphs into a 10/4 structure, which Clardy matches with funky kick variations. (2:26, 150 bpm)
âDyer Lnâ
This songâs intro features complex grooves over alternating bars of 4/4 and 6/4. As Clardy explains, âThis is another spot where the guitar is sparse in the first phrase or two. I wanted to fill in the space with something that was a little screwy.â (0:26, 147 bpm)
âMenâs Shirtâ
The middle section of this track features a short drum break, and Clardy embraced the opportunity to play fills that are inspired by some of his influences. âThe first two end phrases are inspired by programmed parts from the Run the Jewels track âRun the Jewelsâ and an Aphex Twinâstyle linear triplet feel. I also wanted to throw in some hertas as a nod to Dave Grohl on Queens of the Stone Ageâs âNo One Knows.ââ (1:59, 146 bpm)
âA Universal Gonkâ
On this track, the drums enter with a tricky groove in 9/4. Clardy sneaks some elusive tom hits into the start of the pattern. âThis groove was inspired by Stewart Copeland,â he says. âI wanted it to evoke a snake coiling and uncoiling rapidly.â (0:48, 144 bpm)
âDrawingâ
Clardy opens this track with a flurry of blazing kick work and strategically placed open hi-hats that give the pattern an aggressive feel. âItâs a kind of snaky, linear part,â Clardy explains. âItâs what I thought of from listening to the guitar part in the intro.â (0:00, 94 bpm)
These examples offer a mere taste of Clardyâs creative drumming on Trash Generator. So whatâs next for the band? âFor us, the foreseeable future is touring,â the drummer says. âWe have some song ideas that didnât make it past the initial writing stages, and weâll likely explore those later. But for now itâs all about getting songs from the record into live shape and deciding what older material to mix in. Iâm really excited for the challenge of playing these live.â

Tera Melos - âWarpless Runâ
Inspired by the current Super Mario Bros. speed-run champion, this song about skipping worlds in a video game race to the finish provides plenty of IRL food for thought. And Iâd like to take this opportunity to publicly state that Nick Reinhartâs solo on this song is now my favorite of all time. Check out Nick's clinic from this year's EarthQuaker Day to learn more about his effects philsophy.

SPILL ALBUM REVIEW // TERA MELOS â TRASH GENERATOR
Suffice to say that after 10 years as a band and the release of their 7thstudio album, Trash Generator, Tera Melos is simply at their prime. The band is a three-piece melting pot of post-hardcore and punk consisting of Nick Reinhart (Guitar, Vocals), Nathan Latona (Bass Guitar) and John Clardy (Drums).
After seeing the Sacramento-based live as it supported Chon in June, the band seemed to be really excited about the new music they were about to release, with Reinhart posting multiple videos of guitar parts that would be featured on this album. Surely it lived up to the hype the way they were promoting it.
The first song on the album, System Preferences, is a kind of weird bass riff over and over, giving the start to the album a weird vibe. The vocals suddenly creep in which Nick is almost singing and talking in a melody, which then picks up with the drums and guitar coming in, letting you know this album isnât going to be a relaxing one.
The biggest song off the album though would easily be Trash Generator. With the start of the song being an odd guitar riff that you canât seem to not move to while listening to it. The drums also play a big role, which makes it sound like heâs cutting the riff kind of short with a really interesting drum fill. About half way through the song, Nick pulls out his massive range of guitar pedals and goes to work on making a bunch of interesting noises which changes up the song a bit before going back into the chorus.
Personally, my two favourite songs off the album are Warpless Run and Menâs Shirt for two completely different reasons. Warpless Run is exactly what it sounds like. From the very beginning it is fast pace and kicks you in the butt. Then all of a sudden, Nick pulls out his pedals again, but this time almost exploding into a bunch of different sounds causing this song to be the most chaotic off the album. Menâs Shirt is the opposite of that song. It is the only song off the album that has a completely different sound than any other Tera Melos song. Itâs really laid back and a song that you can just bob your head around to (while it slowly puts you in a trance) and seem to get lost in trances while listening to it.
I had the privilege of seeing Tera Melos in October in their headlining tour with Speedy Ortiz. I could say this was the best concert I have been to in 2017. From start to the end of Tera Melosâ set, I was jumping around, head banging, having the time of my life listening to probably one of the best albums of 2017, maybe even of this decade.

Tera Melos is a genre-bending trio on Sargent House who are famous for upending song structures, interlocking rhythmic patterns and technical aggression. They've acquired a multitude of strange pedals over the decade plus of playing together; steadily incorporating each new trick and texture to form the progressive, experimental guitar sounds they play today. Though they've pushed back on being called "math-rock", Tera Melos has made huge contributions to the genre and continue to push contemporaries forward with each off the wall album release.
