Hey loves, I was just recently asked, âwhat poses are good for sleeping wrong and waking up with a sore neck/shoulders?â So I made this little guide for those times when you âslept wrongâ and wake up a little sore:
1. Neck Rolls! Very simple, but super effective. Begin by doing some side stretching here, and then tilt your head side to side, side stretching through your neck. When doing this, focus on bringing your ear down towards your shoulder, but not letting your shoulder rise up towards your ear. To intensify, walk your opposite fingertips away from you. Then roll your neck side to side, clockwise and counter clockwise.
2. Seated twist You can sit with the legs crossed, in lotus, or any comfortable variation as long as the hips are level. Focus on twisting through the upper back and shoulder blades. Let your gaze turn with the twist to twist into your cervical spine and neck too! You can close the eyes if turning the head strains them. Use your arm behind your back as a support to prop your spine up straight and tall as you twist and use the hand on your knee to increase the twist.
3. Yogi Mudra/The Seal of Yoga One of my favorite shoulder openers (and itâs said to relieve headaches). Keep your hips stacked over the knees and interlace your fingersâor grab a strapâat the base of your spine. As you begin to pull the shoulders together, lift the hips up and come onto the crown of your head. Roll the arms side to side, up and down, whatever feels good, really working into the shoulders. For sensitive knees, this can be done from standing too!
4. Thread the Needle This is such a great shoulder opening and twist! From tabletop, extend one arm up into the air and then sweep it underneath of you, threading it under the other. Come down all the way onto the shoulder and the cheek, and then you can raise your opposite arm in the air for more opening, leave it on the floor for support, or bind it behind the back for even more opening! Try to keep the hips stacked over the knees and level.
5. Rabbit Pose This pose targets the space right between your shoulderblades and can feel so good when your back is tight. From childâs pose, sweep the arms behind you and grab onto the heels or ankles, come onto the crown of the head as you begin to lift the hips into the airâtrying to get them stacked over the knees. Focus on pulling the heels with the hands as you lift the hips high.
6. Puppy pose/Anahatasana
This pose is like a baby down dog, and down dog or dolphin can be substituted in its place for similar benefits. Here we keep the hips stacked over the knees and we begin to walk the hands forward and drop the chest. Keep the arms straight and actively press into the floor through the palms to really strengthen and stretch into the shoulders. You can roll up a towel or blanket for your forehead to rest on.
7. Upward facing dog Up dog is a great pose for opening and expanding the chest and the upper back/shoulders. Focus on sliding the shoulder blades down the back and away from the neck/ears. Pull the chest and collarbones forward through the arms and really expand there. You can stay here or twist by looking over each shoulder side to side, getting deeper into the shoulders.
8. âRag Dollâ This is one of my favorite poses to do of all time because itâs so relaxing and comforting. Fold forward, bending the knees deeply enough so your belly can rest on the thighsâbut keep the hips lifted so gravity can continue to lengthen the spine and the legs donât have to work so hard. Interlace your fingers behind the back of your head, letting the weight of the elbows and hands cause the neck to release even more, becoming heavier and more relaxed. You can stay still or rock side to side and back and forth with the head and torso.
Hope this helps all of you who are waking up feeling sore!
I need this like every morning
Yoga for hip openers
hello friends! ever since these photos of me started making the rounds on tumblr, the most common question i get asked is âwhat are hip openers?â so i thought i would make my next guide focused on that. hip openers are poses that help to loosen the muscles that connect to the hip joints. remember that these muscles are often very tight and be careful not to overstretch yourself. loosening the hips happens very very gradually. incorporating some of these poses into your yoga practice can help to achieve both front and side splits!
ps. i tried to put these in a coherent order so that you can flow through them with one leg, then go back and repeat the flow using the opposite leg!Â
standing wide-legged forward fold - put your feet wider than shoulder width and bend forward while keeping the back as straight and flat as possible. you should feel the stretch in your hamstrings - hold for a few breaths, then rotate around to downward facing dog.
lizard pose - start in downward facing dog and raise one leg up behind you, then swing it through to place your foot next to your hand, on the outside. keep your front knee at a 90 degree angle and sink into a deep lunge, with your back knee on the floor and leg extended. youâll feel this one in your back legâs hip flexor (along your hip crease) and also deep in your front legâs hip joint.Â
pigeon pose - from lizard pose, move your hand to the outside of your front foot, keep the knee bent, and pull your foot across so itâs near the opposite hand. bend the knee as generously as you want - the closer it is to being parallel with your body, the deeper the stretch. rest here, or go down to your elbows, or even lay forward as you advance in the pose. hold for 5 breaths.
seated wide-legged forward fold - extend both legs wide as far as is comfortable. rest here, and then bend forward with a straight back. i also like to stretch by reaching toward one foot and then the other.
head-to-knee forward bend - extend one leg and bend the other at the knee. gently bring your head to your knee while keeping your back straight and your core engaged. if you canât get down far, just keep your back straight and hold for 3-5 breaths.
wind relieving pose - come on to your back, bend one knee and interlace your fingers on your shin bone, about two inches below the knee. pull gently toward your body, keeping your back flush with the ground and engaging your core. you can also rotate your knee gently here.
happy baby pose - bend legs and grab for the inside of your heels, and try to keep your back completely flush with the mat - this will give you the deepest stretch in this pose! you can also roll a bit to massage your lower back.Â
reclining goddess pose - release legs from happy baby and let them fall open to the floor. try to keep your lower back close to the ground and put arms wherever is comfortable. relax here and appreciate your fantastic body!Â
hopefully this helps to answer some questions about hip openers! these the poses i focused on when i was trying to achieve the splits, but having loose hips can help with all kinds of other yoga poses and can also release a lot of tension from your lower back. happy hip-opening! :)

Guide to loving your body: 1. Get naked and take a good long look at your body. Trace your stretch marks, feel your hip bones poking out, place your hand over your tummy and take a fistful of yourself in. Appreciate your scars and pimples, your uneven, large,or nonexistent breasts. Take pride in your un/shaven, un/cut, fantastically odd private bits. Hold up a mirror to yourself and study your body. Love it. 2. Be Ugly, reclaim words that are used to put you down and shut you up and scream right back at these fascist beauty standard reinforcing scumbags. Give them the finger and tell them to kiss your fat/skinny/somewhere in between ass âcause you ainât got time to waste with their body hating bullshit. and remember, you donât owe prettiness to anyone. Validate yourself by accepting yourself. 3. Wear clothes that donât fit, that are too big or too small and show all your âproblem areasâ that cosmo insists you hide and walk down the street like the fucking fabulous queen you are. Sashay the hate away. 4. Do what YOU want with YOUR body. Shave or donât, wear makeup or donât, whatever choice you make is yours to make, and anyone who shames you for your decision can keep it moving. This also means respecting the choices of others, even if they differ from your own. 5. Surround yourself with loving and supportive people. Rid of the toxic bullshit in your life if possible, and immerse yourself in a community that embraces body positivity and diversity.
