So my dad used to teach human evolution at the University of Minnesota, right? And his favorite thing was discussing Native American cultures and bashing misogyny. 

So he’d start off class by going “Raise your hand if you think you know why men hunted and women stayed back in the settlements” and most kids would raise their hands. He’d list off a few various reasons and kids would slowly start participating. Then he’d go “How many of you think it’s because men are stronger” and of course most of the males would raise their hands with a few girls. He’d then proceed to rip apart the patriarchal views they had all been taught. “No,” he’d say, “It’s because if five men went out and three or two came back no one would bat an eye. They’d grieve sure, but society would go on. Now if five women went out and three or two came back you know what would happen? Society would collapse.”

And it was true. For many Native American cultures the only reason women did what they did was because the men couldn’t do it. We are (usually) taught a twisted, self-aggrandizing form of history despite evidence suggesting the complete opposite of it.

This was present in a lot of cultures in the past before white colonization (see: imperialism and genocide)

In Australia the Aborigines believed that women were more powerful than men and closer to gods because of their ability to give birth, and men would make themselves bleed just to be like women when they came of age

In the Philippines many people held practices which celebrated a woman’s first menstruation, encouraged free sexual exploration before marriage for young men and women, and believed women to be spiritual leaders, so that the only way a “man” could be one was to become a woman (transwomen were able and even encouraged to marry, and were identified as women within the community)

Also in the Philippines economic structures defined power, so a man who was poorer than his wife would take her name, and daughters would inherit and become heads of the family if they were the eldest

Westerners love to flout how great they are at women empowerment when it comes to other cultures that treat women badly, but actively try to hide the fact that there are thousands of other cultures who treated women better centuries ago than they do even today 

And that’s a fact.

- also? u talking superpowers? are you aware of how superpowery you are?? your teeth and jaw are strong enough to crack your own jaw but your nerves are so sensitive it doesn’t get close. your brain works a million miles a minute to take in and store information and you don’t even realize, as it seems effortless. you have this thing called blindsight, where your brain sends the optical image to the alarm center of your brain before it sends it to the image processing center, which basically means if something’s hurtling towards you you can react Before you even know what you’re seeing. WILD. (its called blindsight bc it allows some blind people to “see” btw. but its EVERYONE its so crazy). also what the fuck is smell??? ya got this organ that takes in air, processes it, and you can basically differentiate the minute compounds of the molecules in the air and tell whats In It, often between like an atom’s difference. we heal ourselves when injured, we carefully balance thousands of motions and actions to keep ourselves balanced, aware, and alive, we can communicate to each other using facial positions (and LET’S not even talk about LANGUAGE) and we’re the culmination of thousands of tiny bacteria guys. AND we can make a new one in less than a year. AND we can properly feed it with a ridiculous recipe that scientists still don’t know all the ingredients. DUDE. we’re fucking WILD.

i got a bit carried away but the point is there’s tons of super stuff, including dipping dots, we just don’t notice it bc we’re used to it. could have made another point about the internet and how were living in the future bc HOLY JESUS but

I know people are gonna get salty af about this but by God she’s RIGHT.

When Brad Pitt did Fight Club, he was cutting weight for every single scene to maintain his physique at 155. I’ve you’ve ever cut weight, you know how horrible that must have been. He did it because they needed a “look”.

Changing Tatum said his Magic Mike body doesn’t last for more than five days. He starved down and dehydrated his already fit physique for a “look”.

The male soldiers on Spartacus: Blood and Sand were eating pretty much chicken and veggies for every meal to maintain a “look”.

Why is this such a big deal? Because all these characters are considered physical goals for men. These are actual unobtainable physical standards for men. Male body image issues get swept under the rug so often that some people don’t even think they exist.

As a guy with an ED, it’s really nice to hear people talking about men’s body image issues, but I kinda feel like saying men are just as objectified as women misses the point somewhat. Objectification has to do with much more than just unrealistic standards of beauty, and while both men and women in the acting business endure horrifying things to maintain the desired “look,” women are forced to do so while also experiencing a number of other injustices. Like, for example, I’m sure both Chris Evans and Scarlet Johansen were submitted to really concerning shit for Avengers, but only Scarlet received highly invasive questions about her body, and only Scarlet’s character was used as an interchangeable romance prop, and only Scarlet did so just to have her character written off by male fans as nothing more than eye candy.

I’m really not trying to say that men don’t experience huge body issues, hell i’ve lived them for the past 3 years, but we need to address that there is already a thoroughly ingrained system of prejudice in place working against women, and that means that they experience objectification often invisible at first glance. Support men and help us, but remember pain is not a competition, as others are in need of urgent care.

(Also, p.s., to those using this to bitch about feminism, feminists are the people pushing the hardest for men with body issues, so don’t fucking use me as a prop because you don’t like women organizing. Fuck you.)

ok but like shout out to all my girls with skin conditions like eczema or acne or keratosis pilaris, etc. society paints such a false picture of women as having perfectly clear and soft skin and like….that ain’t true. so many of us have bumps and scars and dryness and redness and no matter what we do it won’t go away. but yall are perfect okay like believe me i still don’t love my skin but its so Wrong that we hate ourselves so much for something so trivial. you’re beautiful okay and so is your skin i love u.
