Joel had warned Ellie about noise levels already, but considering it’d come from him, she hadn’t paid much mind. He was grumpy, had been willing to kill her more than once, and Ellie simply didn’t trust him. But Tess was a different story. She’d been patient with her, and although quite gruff herself, had shown Ellie some respect. She’d treated her like an adult. So, when she told Ellie to be quiet, Ellie listened.

Nodding once, she crouched down beside the older woman, sensing Joel behind her, ears straining for the tell-tale sound of the undead. Ellie had only come across a few of them in her life, but the groaning was unforgettable, and the fearful anticipation sent shivers down her spine. Instinctively, she reached out and gripped Tess’ arm, watching her expression for direction. Whatever the decision was, Ellie would follow suit.
