What are you doing? He tried to kill us!
We’re not here for revenge. It can’t be about that. It can.
THE LAST OF US 1x06 (2023) STRANGER THINGS 5x08 (2025)
THE WALKING DEAD, 9.05 - What Comes After THE LAST OF US, 1.02 - Infected
The girl hadn’t said a word since they’d set off, the trio tasked with finding some kind of Firefly outpost. Still, despite not knowing where she was going, Ellie was ahead of the pack, Tess trailing behind with Joel. Truthfully, the partners hadn’t said much either, largely communicating through glances. They were both wary about what lay ahead, having no idea why this girl was so important to Marlene in the first place. But if transporting some kid meant finding Tommy, then it’d have to be worth it, because although he’d never explicitly stated it, Tess knew Joel was beside himself with worry. His brother had never gone quiet for this long. Past grievances no longer mattered — you didn’t abandon family, especially when you had so little left. As a companionship built in the quiet, it wasn’t unusual for the couple to travel in silence anyway, really only talking when they had to. But for a teenager that had been especially spirited upon first meet, Ellie’s silence now was unnerving. Tess couldn’t see her expression, but she could imagine it. And she thought she understood the change of behaviour — the poor girl hadn’t expected to be shipped off with two strangers either. After a few hours of letting it be, Joel’s disinterest in intervening obvious, Tess finally decided to catch up to her. They were going to be travelling together for a few weeks, after all, and should learn to communicate to some degree. None of them knew what they were going to run into on the way, and they would have to rely on each other. Now walking in step with Ellie, Tess waited to see if she’d say anything first, unsure where to start herself. But the silence only continued. With a sigh, Tess finally looked over at the teen. “It’s Ellie, right?” The girl nodded. “We’ve been walkin' a long while. You wanna stop somewhere, have somethin' to eat?”
For a kid who had been through as much as she had the past few weeks, Ellie was incredibly stoic. She was silent, compliant, putting one foot in front of the other, onto the next group, the next task. There always seemed to be something else; there was never any end. Her current reality was certainly worthy of an emotional response, but Ellie swallowed the fury, the sorrow of being abandoned again. She’d now been passed around, palmed off, and controlled more times than she could count. Truthfully, sadly, she was starting to get used to it. At least this time around, she felt a sense of purpose, that one thing she could hold onto that would surely make all of the misuse and loss worth it. It had to be a success this time, she had to make sure of it. Unfortunately for her, that also meant spending the next few weeks with the most hostile duo she’d ever encountered. They didn’t know why they were travelling with her either, which made things harder.
Sure, Ellie had attacked one of them, the man, but she’d caught them sneaking around, and who knew what they would’ve done if she hadn’t interrupted them? One glance was enough for Ellie to know they’d done all kinds of shit in the past. They were dangerous, Marlene had made that clear. And now here they were, teamed up and on a mission. A silent one, apparently. Had Ellie not been so focused on burying her resentment, she would’ve been incredibly bored. Years seemed to pass before either one of them acknowledged her again, Tess suddenly sidling up to her. Ellie waited for the woman to speak up first, but that wasn’t out of spite, just wary curiosity. If it had been Joel to approach her, however, she’d certainly have been sour. Trying to appear nonchalant at the suggestion, she shrugged. “Do you?”
“I do,” came Tess’ simple response. “I’m fuckin' starving. I've only got some piss-poor jerky but my mouth's watering just thinkin' about it.” If it hadn’t have sounded so matter-of-fact, Ellie might’ve thought the woman was joking around. But it had been clear from first meet that these two weren’t the type to joke. Ellie was positive they hadn’t even heard of humour. Realising the blonde was still waiting on a response, finally, she nodded. Admittedly, she was starving too, but she hadn’t wanted to look weak by voicing it, not after her and the man’s earlier altercation. Ellie could hold her own, she was sure of it, and since Joel had so easily overpowered her, she now wanted nothing more than to prove it. “Okay then. Joel?” Tess asked, coming to a stop. Ellie did too, the woman looking back to her partner for a response.
Sheer obstinance stopped the girl from looking in his direction too; at least at first. But when he didn’t reply immediately, curiosity got the better of her. She glanced over at him, taking in his guarded stance, the rifle he held. Her eyes widened a little at the sight of it, as it did every time she saw a gun. What she wouldn’t give to hold one of her own. Suddenly engrossed in her own fantasies of being that powerful, Ellie noticed too late that he’d looked at her, too. Embarrassed, annoyed, she quickly turned her head. The pair had tried to kill each other, after all, but he’d quickly proven he had the upper hand between them. And that was exactly why she didn’t like him, or trust him; and exactly why she found him so intriguing.

Max didn’t know how she felt about returning to school. There were some aspects she enjoyed, like spending time with her friends, the free lunches, and the few certain subjects that didn’t want to make her fall asleep. The survival classes were cool, too, even if she’d already learned the basics simply growing up the way she had. More than anything, she valued the time away from Billy. He couldn’t hover over her here, watch her every move, control her. So when the detention came, a result of her failure to complete homework and the mouthful she’d given because of it, Max didn’t see it as an issue. It only gave her more time to read in peace. Sure, she was supposed to be writing out her essay, but the teachers weren’t strict enough to monitor every second of the hour.
Max’s eyes were flicking over the pages when she felt someone lean towards her, followed by a somehow quiet hiss of words. “Oh, erm — yeah. It does.” At first, she suspected the question to be mocking, as most of the students here were former careers. They didn’t value video games, or reading. But as Max met her eye, she noticed something akin to excitement, or at least an enhanced form of curiosity. The red head dropped her guard, pushing the book closer to the girl, so she could read for herself. “I’m just looking for a few ways to beat my high score. I’ve already kicked all of the boy’s asses, but I want to make sure it stays that way.” She’d rather die than let Richie take first place. He didn’t enjoy gaming as much as she did, but Max had no doubt he’d master it to spite her. “Do you play?”
Forgetting herself in her excitement, Ellie poured over the pages of the magazine without looking up, spying a few familiar games but not recognising most. She only really knew what Riley had shared, Mortal Kombat being their favourite. “So fucking cool,” Ellie muttered, flipping the pages, almost forgetting the other girl was there. That was, until, the red head mentioned a high score. Eyes widening again, Ellie looked up at her in awe. “Woah. You’ve got a high score? Dude. That’s awesome. Which game?” She couldn’t believe the stranger not only actively played video games, but had a high score. And was currently sharing the magazine with her. Suddenly noticing how close their faces were, Ellie blushed, letting go of the page and moving back in her seat.
“No,” she replied quickly, her mood noticeably sobered both by the realisation of their closeness, and of the memory of that last night with Riley. Glancing at her switchblade, she paused, torn. The subject was still of great interest to her, despite the grief. With a sigh, and some obvious hesitation, Ellie continued on, not meeting the girl’s eye. “Only once. My best friend, she found this old arcade back in the QZ. It was huge. She’d busted open this machine and gotten all these coins, so we got to play Mortal Kombat II. I was Raiden, obviously. She beat me at first, she’d played before and she knew all these combination moves and did a fatality,” she explained, returning to her original tone, gaining excitement once more as she remembered the screens, the lights. It was one of the most beautiful things she’d ever seen. “She literally spat out my bones, it was so cool. But I got her back, in the end.” Ellie was smiling now, but it began to falter the more she sat with it. She wondered, then, if Riley had let her win. Ellie glanced at the girl, suddenly feeling shy, and wanting desperately to change the subject. “Who are the boys?”
