happy pride to therians and otherkin and nonhumans who don't have human labels. you guys are the fucking coolest
To most animal nonhumans, I highly recommend this PC game called The Wilds! It’s still in Early Access so it’s a bit funky at times, but it’s very good. $5 on Steam or you can torrent it. It’s an indie game developed by one man only, so I highly recommend supporting it.
It’s an animal simulator, and you can play as a grey wolf, grizzly bear, wild boar, mountain lion, red fox, raven, bald eagle, moose, red deer, or raccoon.
You hunt, find a mate, make a den, have pups, there’s unlockable skills, abilities, your animal has its own traits, and you can even customise the looks (e.g. different subspecies of wolves, different subspecies and coat colours of foxes), and a lot more since I’ve only briefly played it so far (personally I love playing as a fox since there’s already WolfQuest for wolves). All the screenshots are from the game page itself :)
i haven't posted here in forever but know that i think part of why my 2d kinshifts were so strong was, in fact, plurality.
2d gorillaz is literally in my brain and he loves stealing the hands and making people make an obscene amount of typos.
Hello I am new to the otherkin community and kinning. I need some advice, I feel phantom limbs and dysphoria of animal features that do not go together (feathered wings, fur tail and ears) and I am unsure what to do, is it possible I have two kin types? I also needed advice with kin memories and finding my kintype, are there any videos or meditations I can do to achieve this ? Thank you.
It is possible it's two different kintypes, but it could also be a singular kintype that has both feathers and fur. It's also possible you could just be imagining them differently when they may in fact both be furred or feathered. My suggestion is to look into things you are drawn to (habitats, animal body shapes, animal noises, etc) rather than going solely off of your phantom shifts because they can be pretty hard to figure out sometimes! If you are more drawn to the idea of having two or more kintypes, I would look into that.
I don't have a lot of experience with past life memories (it's also something I struggle with lol) but my word of advice is to look into general past life meditations or similar methods instead of just looking for kin-specific ones because you might not find much. I don't know of any good videos to recommend but maybe someone else does!
My advice with finding your kintype(s) would be to track things in a journal or a google doc or something, whatever you feel could point towards your potential kintype. Write down traits you think are nonhuman-ish. Not everything is a kintype trait of course, sometimes (for example) being an introvert just means you're an introvert and not a solitary animal! But if you feel like being an introvert is a nonhuman trait for you, then it probably is. Your identity is not a medical diagnosis that can be figured out with a strict set of symptoms. Your kintype is how you personally view yourself or wish to be viewed by others.
Good luck!
in case you're being bullied online for being kin:
don't react. they want you to get upset and write a wall of text detailing all the ways they're wrong - it only makes things worse. don't give them the reaction, the attention they're seeking. ignore, block, laugh it off, shrug your shoulders and move on with your life. you can respond if you'd like, but NEVER address the insult itself.
however! if you're being threatened in some way, report them. and if you need support, my inbox is open.
Anyone else become hyper aware of their wings when they're in bed trying to fall asleep?
it's okay not to have it all figured out, kin-wise. many of us start out as wolves only to realize we're coyotes or painted dogs or, hell, even tigers. some begin as dragons and end as spotted leopards. you might start out as an angel only to realize you're really a comic book supervillain. you might find out you're a kaleidoscope of things, a butterfly and a demon all caught up in one body.
if you had it all figured out at the start, the rest of your life would be boring.
Interesting to me how if you said something like, "I wish I was an animal. I wish I had an animal body, because my human body feels uncomfortable, and I often feel more like an animal. If it was possible, I'd get body mods like horns, whiskers, or a tail," then a lot of Tumblr users reblog because they get it, they feel like that too, and it's profound to them. But if you say, "I'm transspecies" or admit to being a therian, those same people would suddenly be put off and would leave the metaphorical room. How many people aren't human at all but don't consider the possibility of their feelings being literal because it's considered taboo to say it out loud? You're allowed to say it but you aren't allowed to mean it.

Debunking anti-otherkin arguments
Just as the title says. Core points will be highlighted in bold since I doubt any anti-kin will want to read this oh-so-long-but-not-really essay all the way through.
1. All otherkin are delusional, have schizophrenia/DID/clinical lycanthropy/autism/etc.
And… where’s your survey of the whole otherkin community to prove that? You’re most likely not a licensed psychologist, and don’t know every otherkin folken personally. Therefore, you do not have the right to diagnose a whole community. Yes, it is true that some otherkin are mentally ill or neurodivergent. But if you truly thought we’re all delusional, you would confront us with genuine concern - not call us cringe, rant about wanting us all to die, or throw rocks at our heads. The definition of otherkin is intentionally broad, because the idea is to connect folkel that have an integral, involuntary identity as something other than themselves - so yes, folkel with delusions fall under that umbrella. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU GET TO BRUTALLY REALITY CHECK THEM. Chances are, if they’re on Tumblr, they’re already reality-checking themselves.
2. Otherkin are harming the LGBTQ+ community.
I will not deny that the existence of otherkin (and furries) has caused harm to the LGBTQ+ movement. But let me tell you, the otherkin community is fucking furious with the bigots that are using our existence to justify hatred toward other communities. A lot of otherkin that I spoke to are LGBTQ+ themselves (me included,) with many falling under the transgender umbrella as well. Why would we be out to harm LGBTQ+ folkel if many are also otherkin? To quote my novel, “forcing one group to repress themselves for the sake of the success of another is wrong. If we move forward, we move forward together.”
3. Otherkin just want attention. They’re trying to force their way into the LGBTQ+ community and want badly to be oppressed.
Those who fall into the categories in the second sentence are trolls. Otherkin is not a gender. Otherkin experiences can affect your perception of gender, but the identity is not a gender itself. We’re not well-known enough to be oppressed. Is it true that if our community was mainstream we would potentially be oppressed? Given the behavior I see from antikin and the mistreatment I’ve experienced myself, I would say yes. But that’s what we’re trying to avoid. We know there are people out there who hate us so much they’d kill us on sight. Such people have openly stated these threats on multiple occasions. We’re trying to find the line between safety and expression. Considering yourself nonhuman is a bold stance to take, especially when humans view other creatures that are not human as less-than. Why on earth would we go that far?
4. Otherkin started on Tumblr.
Maybe do some research before making claims? Here is a timeline of the history of the otherkin community from 1972-2011. In short, the word “otherkind” was coined in 1990 on the elfkin-oriented mailing list Elfinkind Digest. In a later installment of Elfinkind Digest, the term “otherkin” was first coined as an umbrella term. To quote, ‘“From what I can remember, I got tired of typing elf/dragon/orc/etc.-kin and just used otherkin. It was convenience and practicality. […] There wasn’t actual intent to form a new word; just shorthand.”’ (-Torin/ Darren Stalder.) Otherkin-like experiences as a whole have been recorded for centuries before the internet was a thing, with this document going into a few from that era in detail. The earliest entry is from 404 BCE! You see, the internet serves as a way for folkel with unconventional experiences to connect with others like them, and realize that they’re not alone. The reason why we find a large gathering of otherkin on Tumblr specifically is due to the structure and function of the site itself.
5. Otherkin are kids.
While it is true that most otherkin discover their identity during adolescence, those who are truly otherkin are otherkin for life. Many find out that they fall somewhere else under the alterhuman umbrella, or misunderstood their own experiences. I personally know several otherkin in their 30′s, and have heard of many older folkel whose experiences align with the definition of otherkin. I’m on the younger side of the community, but I’ve still known I was a therian for over a decade. The writers of the Elfinkind Digest? They’re still around, and they’re still elves. Naia Okami, the “on all levels except physical I am a wolf” woman? She’s still a wolf.
6. Therians only identify as “cool” and “popular” animals.
If a therian identifies as a traditionally “cool,” animal, chances are that animal will be completely ruined for them lol. Wolves are not strong. Lions are not brave. Dragons are not noble. Foxes smell horrible. Also, here’s a not-very-comprehensive list of “strange” theriotypes I’ve seen: -coyote
-deer
-vulture
-skunk
-guinea pig
-common garden mantis
-honeybee
-multiple species of ants
-ladybeetle
-earthworm
-cow
-western hognose snake
-tarantula
-jumping spider
-pine marten
-blue-tongued skink
-gecko
-mallard duck
-jerboa
-chimpanzee
-fossa
-binturong
-thylacine
-cave lion
-gorgonops
-short-eared dog
-jaguarundi
-cockatiel
One theory as to why so many folkel are culturally-significant animals is that a) those animals are spiritually significant to humans and therefore it is easy for souls to exchange and b) you’re more likely to imprint on an animal you’re exposed to frequently.
7. Otherkin stole the idea of phantom limbs from amputees (and they don’t experience phantom pain, therefore they’re faking.)
Phantom limbs are not exclusive to amputees. The leading theory on the occurrence of phantom limbs is the theory that we are born with a map of our body in our brains. This is supported by the fact that individuals born without a limb can still feel a phantom limb. Multiple studies have been done on fully able-bodied folkel where they were made to feel a phantom limb. These studies often consisted of the subject’s hand being hidden and someone touching the other hand and the space where the hidden hand would be simultaneously. In otherkin, this body-map may more closely resemble their kintype and include nonhuman features such as wings and tails. As for the phantom pain aspect, the most intense and frequent phantom pain is felt by amputees due to nerve damage at the site of the amputation, but non-amputees can still feel phantom pain - though without that nerve damage it won’t be as frequent or severe. For able-bodied folkel, this phantom pain is moreso a translation of the brain saying “hey, something is supposed to be there but isn’t!” What is notable about the studies I mentioned above is that when a knife was stabbed toward the newly formed phantom hand, the subject could feel pain. This is why you may hear about otherkin commenting that someone “stepped on their tail” or “slammed their wings in an elevator door.”
8. Otherkin use their identity as an excuse for bad behavior.
Everyone, regardless of their identity, needs to be self-aware enough to know their triggers and be responsible for their own actions. If someone is in a mental shift where they can be a danger to themselves or others, they need to contain themselves appropriately. Otherkin is not an excuse for violence, threats, harassment, or sexual assault. For example, if I’m in a state of derealization where I can’t tell dreams from reality, I’ll confine myself to my room - Sunny shift or not. If my shifts will make me lash out or not comprehend human speech and these effects have the potential to be dangerous, I try to hold it back. If I cannot, I confine myself to my room or another area in which I can regain control and repair the human mask.
9. Otherkin are cringe, therefore they should not be allowed to be themselves.
Cringe culture is dead. You have no right to tell someone what they can and can’t do just because you think it’s “cringy.” If someone’s identity makes you uncomfortable, leave. Block them. Don’t go harassing and suicide-baiting and trolling. It makes you look like a total asswipe. Have some respect, for both yourself and others. We’re just trying to exist here.
does anyone have any recs for places to buy affordable wings that are a bit more sophisticated than the wings that places like spirit halloween would have?
more
calling all alterhumans, nonhumans, kin, therians, the otherhearted, fictionkin, plurals, voidpunks and everyone else
i had an idea.
what if we gathered the works of the wider alterhuman community and published the collection?
i’m talking poetry. journal entries. quotes. uplifting words. educational posts. discourse. the art we create of our kintypes. our opinions. our pain. maybe even a glossary of terms in the back.
i don’t expect us to become rich and famous from this. and i know this is going to be a lot of work. but i really want us all to have this. this could really be something special.
so. i’m calling out the mature members of the community. i’m also calling out blogs with a wider reach than mine to get the word out. i’m also also calling out anyone interested in publishing their work. this would be a collaborative effort and i can’t do it on my own.
your help and support is much appreciated.
