'Thor and the Midgard ' from 'Stories from the Edda ' illustrated by Arthur Rackham, 1910.
“In civilizations possessing a traditional character and an intellectual intuition occupies the position of a principle to which everything else can be referred; in other words it is the purely metaphysical doctrine that constitutes the essential, everything else being linked to it in the form either of consequences or of applications to the various orders of contingent reality.”
— René Guénon
Moel Hebog Late Bronze Age Shield, 1100 to 900 BCE, 'Treasure: History Unearthed' Exhibition, Museum of Liverpool, Merseyside
Metal like this is usually formed by tapping it with hand tools. imagine how long this must have taken to MAKE. Holy Heck.
“I have no respect to merchants and preachers; as far as I’m concerned, their only talent is coming up with the right word at the right time. What is a professional preacher, really? He is a kind of middleman who for the wrong reasons tries to make people buy his goods. The more he sells, the more his stock rises. The louder he hawks his wares, the larger his business grows.”
Knut Hamsun, Mysteries.
“Grant me that I have fortune from the blessed gods, and good repute from men all the time, may I be honey to my friends, gall to my foes, honoured on sight or feared respectively.” Sólōn

“The shorter Gallehus gold horn of about 400 AD [from Denmark], depicts two naked gods with buck horns, war-dancing. Since gods wore such horns, buck warriors may have felt themselves repeating the primordial deeds of gods, enacting the world-wide myth of the eternal return.”
- Michael Speidel, Ancient Germanic Warriors: Warrior Styles from Trajan’s Column to Icelandic Sagas
“After the Fire” Jeffrey Jones
“I grew and waxed in wisdom;
word following word, I found more words,
deed following deed, I wrought deeds.”
- Hávamál
Among the abnormal conditions present in modern industrial society are excessive density of population, isolation of man from nature, excessive rapidity of social change and the breakdown of natural small-scale communities such as the extended family, the village or the tribe.

Mammoth Shaped Spear Thrower, 16,000 to 13,500 Years Old, 'Ice Age Art Now' Exhibition, Cliffe Castle, Keighley, Yorkshire
The value of a good spear thrower shows in this fragment which was repaired to keep it functioning. The mammoth's tail, later restored with a bone insert, originally curled over to form the hook. When the handle broke it could not be mended again.
The mammoth is sculpted for effect rather than realism. The holes that look like eyes are too large and incorrectly positioned. They once contained inserts creating an awesome appearance. The small ears are right, and the tusks are on the sides of the broken shaft. The legs pirouette unnaturally but the broad, snowshoe feet are realistic.
