i don't really get any of the stuff anyone says in this argument about the brothers including whatever j2 said like because 

sam can still have friends and relationships and emotional pov without giving up anything about his character 

dean can still be a protector/supporter and have a bite of mytharc or a multi-episode arc while staying in that role

they can both grow as individuals and still be the psychologically etc. etc. codependent brothers we know and love

everyone can win

i can absolutely 100% understand that different people want/like different things from the show and i can see how when you love a character you might want them to be healthy or safe or other things

and everyone enjoys the show differently

but like i want some pretty fucked up things from spn and i’m perfectly happy with that

I agree so much! I mean, like, can we please have co-dependent brothers AND give Dean a storyline that’s more than Dean taking care of Sam? AND I’m tired of sick/weak Sam- I wanna see badass!Sam taking care of business for once

Exactly! I don't see why it can't be both ya know? Because I can think of a million storylines to do that would give wonderful representation of both sides. Like you can have co-dependent brothers and still let the characters grow just as individuals like Dean realizing that he IS worth something outside of his job of protecting/taking care of Sam. Like... they kinda played with Sam's individualism before and broke through his own veil of "I'm the little brother" and Sam's personality had been fighting that label for so long anyways and they proved that there could be codependency but Sam still had it in him to be more than just a little brother. 

And I think that's absolutely awesome. But then the writers like... they keep taking six steps back because they'll have Sam finally come to this highest peak point of "wow I can do this, I am strong enough to do this and not just be Dean's little brother" and then they'll throw him into situations where his entire storyline is weighed on the fact that Dean is saving him/taking care of him/protecting him and they throw him back into that label again. And then obviously with that, comes Dean's own label. They've never had Dean break through that veil that he's worth anything outside of Sam, first of all, and that's .... really sad. They just keep kicking him while he's down and piling on more guilty and more horrible feelings about himself and I don't ... understand. 

The brothers can still be codependent. Giving Dean a little something that helps him understand that he does have more to give the world and more to offer than being a shield for Sam isn't going to change that, it'd just give him some lift internally. How is that so wrong? 

And then same with his storyline. The writers have fallen into this pattern, and switching it up like - making Sam support/save/protect his brother while Dean carried the weight of a mytharc or just a really decent plotline wouldn't affect their codependency either? If anything it'd just reinforce it that Sam goes whacky ducky without Dean and needs him to be okay and needs to help him be okay so that he stays around for as long as possible. Like ... wouldn't that just aid to their overall codependency? And on top of that it'd be giving Dean a storyline where he's doing more than reacting/supporting? So it's like ... both sides win? It's just reversed? 

I don't understand why it can't be both. 

And then I totally agree with you about sick/weak/mentally unstable/dying Sam. Because Sam as a character I think deserves that chance (like he's gotten so few times in the past) to show that he can be this major badass kicking down doors and taking names to protect his brother. We got this glimpse of it in s3, and it was SO incredible like wow it was just this blunt in your face Sam is an amazing brother and so freaking BAMF. And ... yeah. I'd kill for that again. Sam deserves that chance to show he matches Dean in every aspect including the fact that he'd willingly burn the world alive just to save his brother. I'm just... burnt out on this formula of Sam being sick or dying or dead or weak or ... something and Dean saves him somehow but there's a fallout and repercussions that usually wind up leading to the same cycle in the future. 

I just ... want some role reversal that would inevitably lead to more awesome codependency this is all I ask for in life.

i really hate being in this awkward place between the two opposing sides

some scream "DEATH TO CODEPENDENCY" and others scream "THAT'S THE WHOLE SHOW GROWTH MEANS = OOC" 

because ... i guess i lean more towards the second ground. because i LOVE that the brothers are so messed up and tangled up with each other like that is THEM. and i agree that you can never get rid of the codependency it'll just never work

but

i want things

i want for dean to realize he has some self worth outside of just being a protector of his brother, realize he has ANY worth outside of being what he is to sam. i want him to have a meaty arc that involves more than reacting, i want the writers to do something else besides this formula that they've followed for so long, i want role reversal and cool stuff and i want the show to explore sam and his relationships with their friends more and i want the show to physically show just how amazing of a brother sam is by supporting dean and an arc and.... idk. i want ... things. and these things are usually what the first side is fighting for. 

so it's like i can't agree completely with any side. i can't fall into the ranks of believing just one thing because i understand both sides and agree with them. 

and it's just awkward. and i can't say anything especially on bowlegs because i'll upset members of the sides that follow me. 

and idk. i'm just.... a little sad, i guess. because i'll never get what i wish i could have within the show, and no one will ever be satisfied, and i just ...idk. i want things.  

and now i'm gonna go hide out and do hw because i need to be away from my dash.
