Alma felt like she was a liar as long as she could remember herself. Cutting her hair short and playing in games she didn't enjoy. Being her family's pride. The heir that her padres waited for so long. When every action was calculated. Every movement was made so no one would notice her not liking something. Even so, there was something wrong with her. Always wrong. Because she never associated herself with a boy she was supposed to be it her family's eyes. But she had to be. If the god had made her man, it must be like this.
"Eres una maldita puto." She shakes, pressing her arm against the bruise, hiding in the corner. Shrinking at a sight of a small notebook. When blood pumped in pressure. Trying to ignore how Mamá desperately tried to protect her.
Alma spends days praying. She knows she shouldn't be a girl. Even if she wanted to. She shouldn't steal her sisters' clothes just to feel herself. The God didn't want her to be a girl, so she could not. Guilt gripped onto her with sharp blades, cutting again and again. Like a ruthless killer, twisting her lungs into a broad knot. Scratching insude the soft surface of her scull. She didn't want to be a sinner. Renegaded. Every time when she even thought of wearing femmine clothes, she took one step closer to burning hell. Where bad people are tortured.
She runned. She knew it was selfish to leave everything, everyone behind without looking back. But she couldn't live like this. Not when the whole village whispered about her. The rumors spreaded quite quickly. Amd she couldn't survive in the world that didn't seem to let go of her. Burying her into the dry sea waters. She could start a new life somewhere. Abandon all this "I want to be a woman" bullshit.
She didn't abandon anything. Alma wasn't even sure what happened. She just... Introduced herself as Alma to everyone instead of using her birth name. She learned how to make clothes so nobody had to take measurements of her body. Even forcefully making her voice higher, to a more femmine sounding. In just a blink, her entire life became a performance of hiding who she really was. Taking her entire time for every smallest inconsistency in her behaviour. Never allowing anyone to see past curtains.
Pedro was her downfall. Alma understood it since the moment when two pair of brown eyes locked on eachother. He attracted her like a magnet, forcing her to come closer. Stay with him. Open her body, showing her entire soul without a single question. And he flied to her like a butterfly to the light. Alma wanted him close, she needed him like air. Pedro was a drug that made her addicted before she even knew it. If Alma gave herself to a passion flow, if she was lost in the moment... She would lose everything. What would Pedro think if the sweet, social Alma wasn't born as woman? In the best case, he would stop even bother to talk to her. Good thing Pedro wasn't too kin to get their relationships to the bedroom either.
Alma hated lying to Pedro. She didn't have problem with anyone else. But he... Yes, he was the reason of her collapse. Somebody more important than anyone else. And Alma didn't want to lie to him. But telling the truth was painful. Even if Pedro didn't tell anyone, there was no chance to continue their relationships like this.
But... Was it fair to Pedro? To use him and his kindness? No. He had to know. He had to understand what was wrong. Why they could never be.
"Amor, you asked to come?" Pedro slowly entered a confined bedroom. Cletching his sweaty hands.
Alma took a deep breath. She placed the pale blouse she sew aside, leaving it on the bed sheets. Swallowed, tossing her pigtails behind. Twisting it between her fingers. "Yes..." She breathed out, wanting nothing more than to run. Escape. Don't let it all be ruined!
"Is everything alright?" Pedro kneeled next to her, taking her hand.
"You're going to hate me." Alma whispered. She still couldn't believe she was telling Pedro. "I... I'm sorry."
Her boyfriend's face widened in shock. Brows rised up. "Alma, Estimado, there's nothing in the world thay would ever make me hate you!" He assured her, panicked. Alma looked away, unable to face how his face would change.
"No, Pedro... I lied to you. To everyone." Her eyes were strangely dry even if she felt like tears were about to drown the entire village. "It's not just a simple fact. I will go to hell one day. I will burn like a sinner I am."
Pedro's voice melted in her head. Knowing him, he was trying to say that Alma was wrong. That she wasn't a bad person. That she wasn't going to hell. And she wished he was right. She wished she was normal. But it was a sad reality of her life. She would never be free. The last would never let her go.
"I was born as a man." Alma finally found strength to whisper. Just as this her tears dripped from her eyes. Here was it. Everything was over. Their relationship are over.
Pedro froze, not moving an inch for a moment. Before jumped on her, holding Alma between her arms. The woman winced. What was he doing? She felt his tears on her cheek, wet and hot. Why did he hug her even? Wasn't he supposed to hate her now? To be betrayed and disappointed?
Pedro laughed through his crying. "I was born as a woman"
This time even Alma couldn't hold back a waterfall of happy tears.
A bit of headcanons with our favourite transqueen!
Dolores realized her identity wasn't quite cis somewhere around her gift ceremony. Even if she didn't realize what it was in the moment
She officially came out to her family when she was around 13. Isabela was the first person she told! Isa had immediately gave Dolores some of her dresses
Next person to know was Pepa. Mostly because Camilo noticed that Dolores' door has changed and asked his Mamá. Julieta,bas the one to help with transition might've noticed something earlier on, but kept quiet not to make Dolores uncomfortable. (Julieta didn't know much, but she noticed some things that she saw in other trans people)
Dolores definitely had some gender envy toward Isabela in the past, as a symbol of femininity. They're better post-movie

[][][][][][] had always been jealous of Isabela. When they were kids, [][][] was upset because he wanted to be a girl like Isabela. He wanted to wear girlish clothes like her cousins did. Not these pants everyone expected him to have, he wanted pretty dresses like Isabela or skirts like Luisa. He wanted long hair that he could braid. Even before his gift ceremony, he enjoyed playing dress-ups and wearing his mom's old clothes. Imagining himself a girl. Ever referring to himself as a boy made [][][][][][] guts twisted from disgust. It felt so wrong.
As a child, he had thought that it was a normal thing. Who would want to be a boy anyway? The boys were noisy and couldn't just sit in one place.... Well, Luisa couldn't either, but she was okay... Better than any boy.
The first sign happened a few weeks after his gift ceremony when he heard that some people were discussing committing transition with Tía's food.
"Why are they doing this?" He asked, tilting his head, he always been such a curious child, wanting to know everything.
Tía smiled at him, leaning closer. "Sometimes, there's a mistake, and people don't feel like they belong to their bodies."
The kid blinked in surprise. Wasn't it a normal thing? It turned out most boys didn't want to be a girl. No, most boys wanted to stay boys. Not look like their girl cousins.
As years kept passing, this realization was getting stronger and stronger. He— No, she didn't want to be a boy. She wanted to be called with female pronounces, to resemble her cousins, not her brother. She wanted people to call her pretty like they called Isabela. At the age of nine, she spent hours, searching for a name in a book, a name that would fit her. Because [][][][][][] felt so wrong. It didn't sound like her name, it was the name of a boy. A boy that she could never be.
And often, she wondered, why couldn't she be born as a girl, like Isabela? Why would she have to be born as a boy? Why couldn't her mind connect to her body? Who had decided that her body should be a boy whole her mind should be a girl?
When Isabela had her first signs of puberty, [][][][][][] wanted to cry her eyes out. It wasn't fair. She wanted to have it too. She wanted to be able to compete with Isabela and discuss changes in their bodies. Of course, she could ask her Tía for help, but there was a deep fear in her soul. What if her family would say that there's something wrong with her? That she's actually a boy and she should just suck it up.
When her own puberty started, she felt even worse. But she still wasn't sure about this. What if she just listened to some people and imagined something that wasn't true? What if all her 'I'm a girl' thing was just her imagination? Maybe she was upset that the boy of her dream was betrothed to another and decided that her chances to get him would be higher if she's a girl.
It was hard. To understand and to realize. But she wanted to be a girl, so badly, her body made her sick, the changes were disgusting. It was easier when she was a child and looked really simultaneously to Isabela. Now they started to look differently and it disgusted [][][][][][]. Even her own name disgusted her. Everything about her body was wrong. It was boyish. Why couldn't she have shapeshifting like Camilo? She could've just turned herself into... herself. Instead, she was locked. At least until she would talk to anyone. And it was scary. Everyone expected her to be a boy and she hated it. The fact that her older cousin was portrayed as a symbol of femininity didn't help at all.
Isabela was the first to find out. Of course, they were always close. To the point of counting themselves as twins.
The older cousin walked into her room in the middle of the day, graceful and elegant as always. "Hey, [][][], what do you think about my new dress?"
[][][][][][] felt tears welling up in her eyes. She wanted this dress. She wanted to look like Isabela, she was so envious of Isa as long as she could remember herself.
Isabela was stunned. "Hey, I'm sure it's not that bad," She patted [][][][][][] shoulder slightly.
The younger cousin muttered between her sobs. "I want this..." Isabela blinked, staring at her. "I want to be..." She didn't want, she couldn't finish her sentence.
"You want to be what?" Isabela whispered insurely, not understanding where this situation was getting.
[][][][][][] looked down, staring at her knees, before finally whispering in a barely audible tone. The words that she desperately wanted to say out loud for years. "I am a girl, I've always been..."
"Really?" Her cousin breathed out, taking her arm. There was a bit of silence between them "Thanks for telling me... Does anyone else know?"
She shook her head. "Only you,"
Isabela giggled, wrapping her hands around her cousin. "Oh, I'm grateful for your trust, primo— Prima," She immediately corrected herself. "I'm sorry, I'm just not used to calling you as a girl."
"It's okay," She smiled, embracing Isabela back, she couldn't expect anyone just to jump from the idea of her being a boy to the idea of her real identity. "Thank you, for not being mad," She couldn't even explain how much this support mattered to her. It hadn't only made her happy at the moment but also made her way more confident about telling the rest of the family the truth about her.
Isabela let out a laugh. "Why would I be mad?" The younger cousin couldn't help but smile. Isabela looked at her, before asking in a worried voice. "And, if you're a girl, do I have to call you with a different name?"
[][][][][][] thought for maybe a minute. She had spent hours imagining herself with girly names. There was one that fit her especially, making her soul burst into happiness. And finally calling herself by her name was a heaven.
"Dolores. I'm Dolores."
And she said it not only to Isabela but to the whole world. Her name is Dolores.
You know, I feel like transfem Dolores headcanon just takes an interesting turn on her being in Isabela's shadow and jealous of her. Basically making it into gender envy. And also seeing her cousin portrayed as a example of elegance and femininity. It definitely doesn't make Dolores feel better
