11/07 Assignment (Captions-to be accompanied by imagery accordingly)
For marks:Â The marks can be used in any of the colors in the color palette. The small mark represents books on a shelf and should always be used in the group of three. Small mark applications are for moments when space is constricted or when the company name needs to be recognized, but small. Examples include letterheads. Black and white marks should only be used on documents that need to be black and white. The medium mark is the main logo that our audience will recognize. The medium mark can be used in nearly all applications. The blue gradient mark can be used interchangeably with the green one, however, the green mark is the main mark. The large mark is to be used for more official purposes. It can be used when you want the audience to get more information on the company. In this case, you should almost always use the green large mark, unless the blue makes more sense context or color wise.Â
For icons: Slippers or chancletas in a  Dominican home represent  comfort . The sight of slippers placed next to a recliner or bed means that someone has unwinded (or fell asleep).  The slipper  icons can be used as a pair or separately. They should only be used in conjunction with the small, medium, or large mark. Applications may include company products, pins, and patterning. Dominican slippers for women, especially these, are vastly different from the male slippers. They are evidently more feminine, which may want to be considered when applying for advertisement or products. A Dominican grandma making coffee in a  greco and sitting down to read is an everyday sight. To adhere to the companies color scheme, you may use the greco icon in the colors shown on the next page.Â
For applications: Bookmarks is a product that every reader needs and something that every book publishing company should sell. Bookmarks give you freedom to use any of the aformentioned marks and icons to be  designed  in an intriguing and beautiful way. The slogan may also be applied if preferred. The placement of the text and whether or not you want the backhand side to have content is up to you. These are some potential examples where icons may be applied to a bookmark, This bookmark example is a cutout and may be used with varying colored backgrounds as well as by itself. Repeating the icons can make for beautifully designed patterns. When using the marks for application you can add onto the continuous metaphor of books on a shelf. Sliping in the establishing date and location of Our House Publishing can add more text and information onto the bookmark. You may also just want to keep the design simple ; A  simple bookmark is sometimes all a reader needs. Tote bags are very good for carrying books. A bag design can go in all directions, from using a simple mark  to a full bleed pattern. There is a different person for every bag. With bags, as well as bookmarks , you may design both sides. and note, color of the bag and mark does change the overall outcome. Adding on to the idea of slippers, the home, and comfort can enhance the design of a tote bag. Placement of the mark and icon can completly change the style and personality of a tote bag. Using both the green and blue icons together makes for a fuller color scheme. When applying the medium mark to the bag you may chose to use it with or without the rounded line beneath it.  Applying the large mark, which contains more company information fully immerses the user into the company. Separating the placement of the mark and the icons on the bag allows you to make a space and potentially a narrative. How the mark is applied may differ throughout the different tote bag designs. Alignment may be used to combine icons and marks. Semalessly combining the marks and the icons can make for a better design. The arrangement of the slippers themselves may also engage the reader by telling a narrative. Slippers , patterning, and placement create it’s own narrative. The small mark may be all you nee for a tote bag; it makes for a simple yet knowing design. The small mark and an icon is all you need for the viewer to recognize the company.
11/07 Assignment (final statements)
Project Emergence:
Throughout the several genre’s I read I noticed that it was always safe to assume that the characters, especially the leading character, was white, It’s always a shock to  find a book that does have a black or Hispanic as the leading character. I initially started this project only knowing that I wanted to create a book publishing company. As I began to narrow down my company’s mission I identified the one problem I had with books that were being published, it’s lack of character diversity. I began doing research on this and found that this was an issue in children’s books as well. According to the New York Times, just over 3 percent of the 3,400 books reviewed were written by or about Latinos, It isn’t hard to come to terms with this issue, having already acknowledged the society we live in, but for a child to grow up reading books where they can never belong in or for them to aspire to be and love only white people will cause them to become detached from their race and grow up in ignorance. These acknowledgements are what inspired my company and thus inspired the branding for my company. With this mission in mind, I created a mark that not only contained a metaphor for leaning books, but a metaphor for people of varying shapes and appearances to come as one. The icons represent objects and items that I grew up with in my Dominican household. The name Our House Publishing was created with the idea of creating a company that would comfort Latinos as well as other minority groups.
Mission Statement:
Our House Publishing was created in response to the lack of leading minority characters in childrens, youth, and adult books. As a book publishing company we wish to inspire, entertain, and comfort children and adults of varying racial and ethnic backgrounds to ensure that they also are duelving into a world where they belong.
Final Name: Our House Publishing
Final Slogan: Our House, where books are written with color
Language Strategy: For text, lowercase letters, rounded corners, fonts Avenir and Dense. For imagery, dotted lines, imperfect corners, full color bleed, varying line lengths
