AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER (2005 - 2008) -> "We need you, Aang." (insp.)
idc what anyone says, monsters motivated by love are a thousand times scarier than any other kind. hive minds that subsume all life out of a genuine belief that everyone will be happier that way. aliens that subjugate humanity out of a colonizer mindset of “helping” a primitive species. things that mutate bodies and minds out of a desire to “fix” or “cure” them. undead creatures that want to spread the curse to their loved ones so they also never have to die.
monsters that treat their victims like scared family pets that don’t want their medicine. monsters that think they know best. monsters that wield the corrupting, devastating, horrifying power of love.
nothing is scarier to me.
Naruto: i need to be with you. i will chase you to the ends of the earth. when you’re in pain, i’m in pain. i would do anything just to make you smile. i would give up my hopes and dreams just to bring you home with me.
Sasuke: you make me feel warm and fuzzy. i’m so happy that it hurts. when i’m near you, i forget all my hate. you make me weak and confused, so i have to kill you. but if you were to die, i would die too. you’re my one and only.
Both: we’re such good friends.
i LOVE the idea of "i can't win, but you can lose" in fictional confrontations it is SO fucking tasty. the human nature to self destruct and the human nature to survive by any means necessary combined at its finest.
I wish more emphasis was placed on the fact that Charlie is inherently inhuman. She is a demon. Born and raised in hell. Show Charlie feels too human for at least over 100 year old demon princess born and raised in hell. She doesn’t just misunderstand people in the more cutesy out of touch rich kid way she does in the show, but in a weird, offputting way. She tries to be human but fails miserably, because she fundamentally cannot understand humanity as a demon. I think this would be a very interesting direction to take her character.
One of my biggest gripes with Charlie is she feels too human in the way she reacts to the environment she grew up in. She is disgusted by the cannibals and the violence of them, but this makes no sense as she grew up in hell all her life. Charlie should be used the gritness and griminess of her home. I understand this is too make Charlie the odd one out, but it doesn’t make any sense for a person raised here all their life.
I think this could be a better way of exploring Charlie’s naïveity and her unawareness about sinners despite being there all her life, because there is a fundamental difference between them.
I imagine this Charlie to be kind of be like Caine from TADC, and her pilot self: overzealous, hyperactive, a tad zany maybe even, overly nice to a fault, very eager to please but often misunderstands what it is her guests really need and want, leading to more problems than actually helping people.
Like Caine, this could be endearing and fun at first, but it could get grating over time for the other characters, and something Charlie has to get over, and learn how to understand to sinners to actually help them achieve redemption.
In science fiction, AIs tend to malfunction due to some technicality of logic, such as that business with the laws of robotics and an AI reaching a dramatic, ironic conclusion.
Content regulation algorithms tell me that sci-fi authors are overly generous in these depictions.
“Why did cop bot arrest that nice elderly woman?”
“It insists she’s the mafia.”
“It thinks she’s in the mafia?”
“No. It thinks she’s an entire crime family. It filled out paperwork for multiple separate arrests after bringing her in.”
I have to comment on this because this is touching on something I see a lot of people (including Tumblr staff and everyone else who uses these kind of deep learning systems willy-nilly like this) don’t quite get: “Deep Reinforcement Learning” AI like these engage with reality in a fundamentally different way from humans. I see some people testing the algorithm and seeing where the “line” is, wondering whether it looks for things like color gradients, skin tone pixels, certain shapes, curves, or what have you. All of these attempts to understand the algorithm fail because there is nothing to understand. There is no line, because there is no logic. You will never be able to pin down the “criteria” the algorithm uses to identify content, because the algorithm does not use logic at all to identify anything, only raw statistical correlations on top of statistical correlations on top of statistical correlations. There is no thought, no analysis, no reasoning. It does all its tasks through sheer unconscious intuition. The neural network is a shambling sleepwalker. It is madness incarnate. It knows nothing of human concepts like reason. It will think granny is the mafia.
This is why a lot of people say AI are so dangerous. Not because they will one day wake up and be conscious and overthrow humanity, but that they (or at least this type of AI) are not and never will be conscious, and yet we’re relying on them to do things that require such human characteristics as logic and any sort of thought process whatsoever. Humans have a really bad tendency to anthropomorphize, and we’d like to think the AI is “making decisions” or “thinking,” but the truth is that what it’s doing is fundamentally different from either of those things. What we see as, say, a field of grass, a neural network may see as a bus stop. Not because there is actually a bus stop there, or that anything in the photo resembles a bus stop according to our understanding, but because the exact right pixels in the photo were shaded in the exact right way so that they just so happened to be statistically correlated with the arbitrary functions it created when it was repeatedly exposed to pictures of bus stops over and over. It doesn’t know what grass is, what a bus stop is, but it sure as hell will say with 99.999% certainty that one is in fact the other, for reasons you can’t understand, and will drive your automated bus off the road and into a ditch because of this undetectable statistical overlap. Because a few pixels were off in just the right way in just the right places and it got really, really confused for a second.
There, I even caught myself using the word “confused” to describe it. That’s not right, because “confused” is a human word. What’s happening with the AI is something we don’t have the language to describe.
Anyway what’s more, this sort of trickery can be mimicked. A human wouldn’t be able to figure it out, but another neural network can easily guess the statistical filters it uses to identify things and figure out how to alter images with some white noise in exactly the right way to make the algorithm think it’s actually something else. It’ll still look like the original image, just with some pixelated artifacts, but the algorithm will see it as something completely different. This is what’s known as a “single pixel attack.” I am fairly confident porn bot creators might end up cracking the content flagging algorithm and start putting up some weirdly pixelated porn anyway, and all of this will be in vain. All because Tumblr staff decided to rely on content moderation via slot machine.
TL;DR bots are illogical because they’re actually unknowable eldritch horrors made of spreadsheets and we don’t know how to stop them or how they got here, send help
Having been to several talks on modern ai I can confirm
I always think of this tweet when I see people praising machine learning and the new kinds of AI as a panacea.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Look buddy, i’m just trying to make it to Friday.
reblog if its friday and you made it
if razzle and dazzle in their demon forms had more screentime without dying and lucifer not showing up, would it be better?
If they just had more time in demon form, they would still mainly be modes of transportation, or serve as some kind of barrier between the main cast and the angels. Razzle and Dazzle have no purpose in the show aside from making for cute merch and that one scene in the 5th ep.
Maybe if they had more impact on the story, like showing Charlie really does want to help and care about the lower class, or even to showcase that even if she DOES care, she’s still a princess, and still benefits from the system that hurts her people, it might have held more emotional weight when they eventually died. The death was just unnecessary, made to make you feel sorry for Charlie and to create more conflict.
They make me violently ill. That’s all 😊
(GEGE WHEN I CATCH YOU IT’S OVER IF YOU DON’T LET THEM LIVE THIS LIFE)
(Y’all I feel like I’m posting too much rn but who cares)
This scene really makes me feel so bad for her, like genuinely sad.
Like, imagine believing that your parents are in a happy relationship, entirely loving and everything, and then your father goes and cheats on your mother, completely shattering that reality.
Then having him break the promise of a lifetime all because of the cheating, AFTER having to watch and listen to your father flirting with/harrassing said person.
And THEN, if that isn’t enough, you have to watch as your father nearly dies to protect that person from the consequences of the deal HE proposed without a second thought. (Sure, you might not know that, but still).
They left you, and now they’re demanding to be back in your life, after you discovered that the entire time, you were some obligation? They suffered all because of you, and used you to justify never doing anything?
GOOD FOR HER. If only she was in a better show.
What purpose do these two even serve from a narrative standpoint?
Oh, what’s that you say? They’re only a setup for a joke in one scene, only used for cute merch, and one of them dies in the last episode to try and bring unnecessary sympathy?
If this was your answer, then you are...
CORRECT!
Razzle and Dazzle do not DO anything. They don’t add anything to the story, we don’t ever see them around the hotel, and I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can’t even tell them apart most of the time.
What relevance to they have to Charlie, when their roles as “protectors” is mentioned once and never again? Wasted potential. They could have been low ranking demons Charlie took in to SHOW her kindness instead of having it spoon fed to us by Valorie.
They could have been notable servants from the castle to showcase how, even though the princess has good intentions, she is still a demon princess who slowly realizes their use beyond simple servants.
Hell, they could have been pets that don’t do anything, like Kiki or whatever the cat’s name is that come and go, but why have one of them die pointlessly and then gloss it over with the final song of the season?
Sorry for the rant, this just really bothers me!
Thank you @sunnydust2003 and everyone who got me to 5 reblogs!

I know I’m not the first person to say this, and I hope I’m not the last, but wtf is this?
Not only are the sexualities (and the stereotypes that come with them *cough cough* Alastor *cough cough* Angel Dust *cough cough* Maggie because you will never catch me saying that ass name), but the designs? HELLO?
If you were to tweak the color schemes a bit, along with the clothes, you could be looking at the exact same character over and over again. Same body types, same colors, same style, same POSES?
Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk!
