Why I think the “Paul became the new Brain after he blew up the meteor” theory has a lot of merit:
It’s hard to see in the proshot due to the editing but in the digital ticket, at the very end of Inevitable, you can clearly see the rest of the Hive pause and turn to Paul as if taking their cue from him.
At this point the song feels like it could already end, but then Paul proclaims “the Apotheosis is upon us” and the Hive immediately follow suit.
Thematically it also makes a lot of sense for Paul to become the “head” of the Hive—this way, him blowing up the meteor is “self-destruction” in more ways than one.
(Plus, he is called the leading man at the start after all)
rotating something particular about paulkins in my brain... Emma has meaning in her life outside of Paul. she has a passion to pursue, grief and guilt and trauma to process, strained relationships to build and mend. Paul doesn't have much going for him outside of Emma. she brings meaning and motivation to his life, she's central to his character. to Paul, Emma is a guiding light. when he loses her, he loses his way. he becomes something else.
to Emma, Paul is an anchor. he grounds her, he keeps her steady. Emma will be doing what she's doing, whether he's with her or not. she'll come back home, she'll work, she'll study, she'll try to engage with her family, she'll pursue her dream. Paul has nothing to do with those things, but his presence makes them easier. he's a pleasant constant she can look forward to seeing at her shitty job. he's a buffer to support her and back her up with her family. he's a listening, understanding ear. he's an encouraging squeeze to the shoulder. he's someone who sees her for who she is and lets her be, he's a safe place. Paul is Emma's first real connection, the one successfully meaningful relationship she has. Paul is Emma's proof that coming back to Hatchetfield was worth it. when Emma loses Paul, she loses her anchor. she loses the thing that makes her efforts feel worthwhile.
there's something about how in paulkins' tragedies, Emma is the one we tend to see really experience losing Paul. even if the rest of her life is left intact, even if she seemingly gets her dream handed to her on a silver platter, it means less when it coincides with losing him. she still wants it, and she'll still do it, but there's a hollowness to it when she has no one to share it with.
Rottensuit for @zombcorpz
Ok I've now seen it five times so here are some of my favourite Paul centric details from the West End run of The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals that aren't in the proshot. Not all of them are things that he does consistently, some I've only seen once or twice:
•When he goes to Beanies for the first time in the show, he would check his breath and fiddle with his cuffs while Emma argued with Nora
•After the Godspell jokes both he and Emma would realise how close they had gotten to one another and turn quickly away
•Mouthing Emma's name to himself in the mirror while he gets ready before Lah Dee Dah Dah Day
•Scrabbling for the phone during What Do You Want, Paul? when Mr Davidson wheels him around the desk (at one show he accidentally threw it half off the desk instead)
•Arguing with Pete and Eugene during Cup of Roasted Coffee while he tries to get Emma's attention. (Especially enjoyed him mouthing "It's me, Paul" as if she'd forgotten in the thirty whole seconds since they spoke last)
•Dyslexic Paul Matthews!!! Their whole back and forth of when they're going through the alleyways after escaping from Beanies. Shout out to the one show where Emma also said she wouldn't take advice from a man in a suit
•Shielding Emma and Bill with his arms outstretched during Show Me Your Hands
•When Emma grabs his knee during their heart-to-heart at Hidgens's house, he would unconsciously run his hand over the same spot afterwards
•Paul squaring up to Sam during Join Us And Die and immediately getting punched in the face
•The very whiny and pathetic 'what the fuck' he lets out while lying on the floor after Not Your Seed. (In the proshot you can see him mouthing the words but it's muted and I'm upset about it)
•Tilting Emma's face towards him when they're being circled by the military in America is Great Again
•Finger guns after the not-kiss

Lords of the Dungeon
cw: blood, violence, some spoilers
We already know what Laios and Marcille are like as Dungeon Lords, so I've taken the liberty of imagining a little about what the other three would be like in this role I'll take each one in order^^
Senshi
As a lord, Senshi seems to me to be the most reasonable and stable. The dungeon is his home, and he, as a decent owner, brings order to it. Senshi knows the value of desires and does not change the dungeon radically, but takes the monsters under strict control, bringing it closer to the ideal, modeled on the Golden City
Judging by his reflection in the mirror of desires, Senshi dreams of a peaceful life with his friends. He would create conditions to avoid a repeat tragedy, but the fulfillment of his desires would turn against him, as happened with Mithrun
Chilchuck
Chilchuck is used to seeing the dungeon as a source of danger and profit. His dungeon is a place full of intricate traps and secret tunnels where riches are hidden. The monsters obey him, but controlling them is too physically exhausting for him
His dual nature makes him want everything and a lot. Chilchuck wants to restore the family idyll, but at the same time not have obligations that he cannot fulfill. His time as lord would be extremely short (I highly recommend reading this post, it has a more detailed portrait of Dungeonchuck and his analysis: https://www.tumblr.com/fumifooms/760199946778624000/dungeon-lord-chilchuck-thoughts)
Izutsumi
She appears to be the most chaotic and aggressive due to the fact that she contains two souls, so the monsters take on this mood. The dungeon will undergo serious changes for the worse
Izutsumi's incentive to follow the party was to separate her soul from the soul of the giant cat, so she would most likely receive the illusion of being freed from her beast form. Her second greatest desire is to take revenge on the one who turned her into a beastman, and she would do anything to achieve this
Serirei artists... Rise....

current struggle: dungeon meshi making me want to draw animals and monsters but I suck at it (Laios boobs out because if I had to draw clothes with all the animal parts I would have cried)
