Caine and Gangle go outside and touch grass. I was thinkin too hard about their Parallels as self-destructive “failed” artists and this was the result.

Brad Bird once said that you can’t create the illusion of life if you haven’t actually lived one, and that’s a line I think about a lot around the Traumatizing Digital Circus. This comic was inspired by: the purpose of making your own art in a world where AI image generators can churn out endless content for you, the way 3D software makes it easy to create infinite spaces but hard to capture authentic hand-drawn human touches, the way all my college art teachers were skeptical of the students’ desire to make anime-inspired stylized 3D visuals right up until it became the new trend in the animation industry—- and how easy it is to get so lost in the technical aspects of art & the consequences of failure that you lose sight of what art is even supposed to be for.

[also: a special thanks to the windows error message generator, this Blender grass tutorial, & all the different poets who wrote about grass— though I’ll let you guys figure out all the Tolkien/biblical/& poetry references.]

...............bro. this is a fucking masterpiece. i LOVE all the scrunchy caine faces, i LOVE the panel w gangle in The Box as she talks about her trauma, i LOVE the accurate & horrifying biblical references in the windows error messages, i LOVE gangle beaming studio ghibli grass right into caine's noggin, i LOVE LOVE LOVE the last panel!!!! YES!

i majored in ancient mediterranean studies (they call it "classics" but that's a terrible name lol) and one of the classes i took was on the ancient hebrew bible in the context of its time, and one of the things we talked a lot about was translation - jewish translations and christian translations tend to vary a lot, and it's all really interesting (to me at least lol)!

here's a website that lists a lot of different translations side by side so anyone looking up some of the references in this comic can look at different ones. the main story of Cain & Abel (the part everyone knows, basically) is Genesis 4:1-4:15 - pretty short actually! the list below is just the specific parts referenced in the comic. ^v^

Genesis 4:8 [Cain killed his brother Abel]

So many interesting parallels here, but my fav is that Caine is afraid of losing his ability to create because he separated himself from the blue ai, and biblical Cain lost his ability to farm (a type of 'creation') because he killed Abel.

the "Caine absorbing the blue ai = Cain killing Abel" allusion has been there the whole time, but I never thought of Caine separating himself from the blue ai in the void as also analogous to "killing" Abel! Even moreso than the first time, almost, since the first time, "Abel" was still a part of Caine, but now he's gone for good. Not to say that it wasn't the right thing to do, or anything, but eek!! both things can be true!!!! so cool!! i love this comic!

And YES i'm normal about the parallels. I think the specter of biblical Cain's punishment is hanging over our Caine throughout the entire series, and throughout his entire life. I stopped the error message at "My punishment is greater than I can bear," but I think about tadc Caine a lot in the context of this entire verse:

And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!  Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; I shall be hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that anyone who finds me will kill me.”

I'm not a biblical scholar, but to me it's the fear of being condemned not to death but to a horrible existence. You're cut off from the ability to create things, cut off from the being[s] that created you, and cut off from the ability to have community-- to the point where, because of all these things, you can't see any future except for one where people treat you with violence. TADC Caine's monologue in episode 9 where he fears that "if I leave them unchecked, they could kill me" feels related to that as well. I see echoes of the biblical Cain punishment in the little white shame box, in Cain's general existence in the circus after he "kills" Abel and is frantically trying to make something that humans will approve of even as he's "cut off" from the world & incapable of ever making anything "real" enough for them, and also finally in his new existence after he quote "ruin[s] everything again"/ the humans kill him.

Not to over-explain my own comic, but part of what i was going for with the ending was that like. Caine confesses that he is incapable, he is cursed, he is cut off from the ground & the grass & from the basic act of creation in some fundamental way he will never escape. but instead of being met with violence, the 'anyone who finds me will kill me,' he's met with compassion.
