Grae, they/them, nonbinary, bi, ace-spectrum, neurodivergent in so many fun ways, just here to spew my garbage into the void, i reblog a lot of fanart bc i want to elevate talented artists, also bc good omens sunk its claws into me a long time ago and has only recently started to let go. the adventure zone, avatar: the last airbender, dimension 20, various dropout shows, gravity falls, the murderbot diaries, tadc, wwdits, bbc merlin, and ofmd also live here. this is a mostly untagged clusterfuck, the only thing i consistently tag is fanart, and snakes, because I like them.Â
just read platform decay, the new murderbot book, and will be posting about it A Lot. I will be tagging those posts with "platform decay spoilers" if you want to block them.
also, just watched and then read project hail mary, fantastic stuff, bc the movie just came out I will be tagging those posts with "phm spoilers"
unrelated, I'm seeing the TADC finale in theaters on June 4th, and I will refrain from posting about it (except in a tumblr community set aside for that specific purpose) until June 19th when it hits youtube. when it does, I'll use the tags "tadc spoilers" and "tadc ep 9 spoilers"
I know at least some parts of the TADC finale were leaked somehow somewhere. I don't want to see it. I don't want to know about it. If you try to tell me about it, I will bring harm upon you. if you try to spread the leaked video/info, or post about it, you are my enemy. don't fucking test me.
anyway pinning this so people will know what tags to block if they don't want to get spoiled! ^v^
helpful tattoo reminder: they are technically Injuries so u have to eat a lot of calories drink a lot of water and sleep a lot after so your body can Heal The Injury
another helpful tattoo reminder: the 24-48 hours after you get a tattoo your brain can not be trusted in regards to whether or not you should have gotten that tattoo, if you have somehow ruined your life, if it turned out ugly, etc. ignore that
finally, while i am at it: always bring a candy bar and a sugary drink to your appointment for blood-sugar reasons (worst case scenario) or so you can have a treat (unilaterally applicable)
Can I just emphasize that not everyone reading this has yet encountered the information that injuries require food, hydration, and sleep? I think the way many people associate rest and injury is that you rest the injury itself to avoid making it worse, but overlook that the healing process itself requires rest regardless of if not-rest directly injures it further.
Also exercise is a form of controlled injury so that as your body heals it heals stronger. You also need food-hydration-rest for strength and cardiovascular improvements after exercise.
You'd think "don't use a fictional creature as an allegory for oppressed minorities and as a horde of vile automatons that it's always okay to kill in the same work at the same time" would be a no brainer, but roughly 70% of all works featuring goblins and/or robots demonstrate otherwise.
Speaking of Ojibwe! Thereâs a new point and click game to help teach the language! Itâs called Reclaim! Azhe-giiwewining, and is currently on sale on Steam!
fantastic. i love it. i posted this after my wife said it yesterday and as i was doing it i was like "this can't be an original thought. as soon as i hit post someone's going to say 'you stole this from a tweet from 2014' and i'll say 'no, i stole it from my beautiful wife.'"
all yall make jokes about couples and their nonromantic third wheel having fun together, but im the one getting treated to food tonight by the couple im nonromantically third wheeling. you wish you were me
I'm sorry I read this as "necromantic third wheel" and went on a very rapid powerful imagination adventure. hello lovebirds I'm the skeleton here for breadsticks
Iâm actually going to reblog a thing just because this is really important.
As someone who has epilepsy and used to have several grand mal seizures a day, Iâd also like to add that âoffer helpâ can range anywhere from keeping the person calm to explaining to them where they are and what they were doing to even just telling them they should sit and rest for a while longer (lack or coordination is common, and it can be hard to walk straight or see clearly).
Itâs okay for them to take up to a half hour to fully regain their bearings and sort out what they were doing prior to the seizure. Just answer any questions calmly and be there for support.
If they come around and you start to panic or shake them or ask them what the heck is wrong with them they are going to freak out and panic too.
I cannot stress it enough that this is bad.
If someone has a seizure and they come out of it, please. please stay calm.
They are likely disoriented and confused, even if itâs only for a minute or two, and you donât want them panicking on top of that because they can have another seizure as a result.
IMPORTANT because last year a kid in my class had a seizure, none of us even knew he was at risk for them either so just cause you donât think you know anyone doesnât mean you donâtÂ
I have to stress how important it is to time a seizure. If it lasts more than a few minutes, call an ambulance.
DO NOT CALL THE POLICE. Iâm dead fucking serious. I had a grand mal in public once and the POLICE were called and imagine coming out of the seizure, feeling like you got smacked in the head with a sack full of bricks, confused, dazed, in desperate need of some sugar to boost low blood pressure and some DIPSHIT has called the police and I was being threatened with being âdrunk and disorderlyâ. It took a phone call to my doctors office to get them to back off. The police cannot properly deal with sick people.Â
Offer help can be:
assuring person where they are/what time it is
getting them something to drink if they can; seizure burns so much energy and does cause a blood pressure drop
getting them safely to transport or a carer
getting them some dignity like a blanket/towel [loosing control of your bladder and bowels is fucking horrifying]
ensuring they have a way to get home. Someone who has just had a seizure should NEVER DRIVE straight after
calling emergency services if you notice any of these symptoms because they may have stroked out.
Why you shouldnât put anything in someoneâs mouth: they will choke. Yes, they may bite their tongue but I can assure you itâs less traumatic than cracking your jaw on someoneâs greasy wallet or choking on a spoon.
DO NOT HOLD ANYONE DOWN. Example: someone pinned my right shoulder mid-seizure a few years back and how I have a permanently displaced and clicking shoulder. Let the person flail around, those muscles are out of control and restraining them does cause more damage to the patient and you.
People can also have seizures that look epileptic, but are rather psychogenic. I had a coworker who had PNES (psychogenic non-epileptic seizures) as a result of trauma, and I learned a lot about this from them.
Because PNES seizures arenât caused by the same thing as epileptic seizures, they can look similar but people can be semi-conscious during them, generally do not lose full control of their bodies (bladder/bowels and other reflexes remain), and importantly, they can last longer than 5 minutes (even hours) without causing long-term damage.
The âdo not call the policeâ point was especially vital for them, because people with PNES are more vulnerable to medical abuse by professionals who think they are âfakingâ because the seizure isnât epileptic, and a person with PNES may have medical trauma from being treated cruelly by doctors, family members, etc. while seizing in the past. This study looked at stigma around PNES (also called functional seizures; Iâm using PNES because its what my coworker called it):
Literature suggests that it can take years for patients to finally get a diagnosis of FS, but once they receive the diagnosis, it is often met with negative stereotypes and perceptions that lead to stigmatisation and treatment resistance. [âŚ] Moreover, with 34 of the 70 included data sources reflecting HCP [healthcare professional] stigma, one of the main themes that arose from this review illustrated the importance of HCPsâ acknowledgement and acceptance of their role in both perpetuating and reducing FS stigma. From our review it became apparent that HCPsâ negative attitudes towards patients with FS persist in the health community, often because of a lack of knowledge, general awareness, understanding and medical training with regards to this disorder
For my coworker, they expressed that one of the most important things for them was to just not be alone, to have someone verbally saying they were with them and it would be alright, and then to be supported according to their needs once the seizure ended. Their seizures were often triggered by stress, or from trauma triggers, so being treated with compassion, having their body respected, and having a calm environment during and after the seizure were very important.
Obviously if you have no other context, its best to assume an epileptic seizure and act accordingly. But to return to the graphic above, check for any kind of ID, whether a tag or medical bracelet or anything else! And do not treat psychogenic / functional seizures as less real or less important, and donât let anyone around the person who is seizing treat it that way either.
hey so i kinda did fanart for an excellent tadc fic i've been keeping up with called "There's Room For You, Too", there's a bit in chapter 5 where Gangle and Caine are writing in a sketchbook and i re-created the sketchbook pages irl.
disclaimer: this will not make sense if you haven't read the fic (which you should do! it's fantastic!). also, probably ooc, because gangle knows how to draw and i don't - these are just little doodles meant to serve as visual shorthand. also i have dysgraphia so my handwriting is diagnosably terrible, and I have trouble planning out spaces - ya get what ya get!
super turbo thank you to @mewkaro for the reference of Gangle and Caine hugging, my brain could NOT picture it and this sketch was very helpful.
various bts ramblings about the fic beneath the cut
ik it's probably supposed to be all one page, my handwriting is really big due to aforementioned dysgraphia so the writing in binary took up way more space than I thought. that's why the "yes yes yes yes" is up near the little doodles, rather than underneath the binary - I wasn't sure how much of caine's initial introduction I'd be able to include on one page, so since the "yes yes yes yes" is in response to the doodles, I thought putting it next to them worked well.
i hc that gangle has really cutesy handwriting - I was originally going to try to lean into that a bit more, maybe dot the "i"s w hearts, to help differentiate the two of them, but wound up going with just cursive vs print for simplicity's sake. perfect is the enemy of done and all ;)
i am aware that some of the rest of the gang look a tad cursed. believe it or not, these are the least cursed versions I was able to produce. for some reason, zooble was extremely easy to draw (they're waving at gangle since i made the couch too small lol), and almost everyone else was a struggle (except gangle & caine). maybe bc caine, gangle, and zooble are some of my favorite characters, maybe bc they have some of the least humanoid designs, who knows?
i tried so dang hard to do the bees in the same style as caine does the "look at this cool bee i drew!" in episode 3, but they def turned out a little scary - why did you give them such weird eyes caine???
many more doodles happen in the fic, and they're all adorable, and i may come back to them, but not right now bc my hand hurts - that's probably why it's all smudgy lol.
hey uh remember when i said maybe someday i might do more of the doodles? it's someday!
same disclaimers as before - go read the fic, gangle can definitely draw better than i can, notes/explanations/various ramblings under the cut!
picking up right where we left off, we have the first few doodles, which are described individually, e.g. "caine drew this", "gangle drew that". I tried to stick to the "caine on the left, gangle on the right" theme when possible. after this, it's left more up to the reader's imagination, which I had a lot of fun with ^v^
to quote the fic, "Bees and eyes, and friends and everything graced the paper before having to turn to a fresh sheet, again and again." I only had the energy for one page of bees/eyes/friends/everything today, but who knows what the future may hold? I don't know a lot about anime, but i know what sailor moon is, i know what a gijinka is, and I remember the way my best friend in middle school taught me to draw anime eyes in the margins of our homework - thanks pb, wherever you are!
finally "[in the middle of] drawing a pillow fight adventure that turned lethal" and "two computers and a sad battery"
bonus content: me figuring out how to represent all the different characters as bees. some of these turned out way better than on the actual page (mostly jax, zooble, and pomni), but such is life!
it cuts off for some reason, but the bottom says "no iteration of caine bee should have teeth" - trust me, I tried! it does not look good!
below the cut: close-ups, explanations, artistic decisions, ramblings, etc.
I tried to give Gangle and Caine distinct drawing styles where I could, especially when it specifies who is drawing what, like on the first page.
Gangle - lighter, sketchier, rounder shapes, anime expressions and indicators (blush, sweat drop, that little anger star thing)
Caine - thicker, blockier, simplified, more âchildishâ, itâs not that heâs not talented, but he âstruggled immenselyâ, and âlearning the hand coordination to draw was very different in the real worldâ, and I think he would prioritize effective visual shorthand. Is this an excuse for me to not overthink his drawings and just sort of try my best? maybe, what are you, a cop?
it definitely didn't always work, but i think it came through pretty well with some of the eyes and bees!
the first page has 4 distinct doodles, which i hope came across effectively.
Caine draws "himself being confused by the other's argument over whether pizza was better hot or cold."
Gangle responds with a drawing of him "trying digital pizza for the first time and not having a preference towards either to everyone's chagrin." I probably could've drawn more of the others reacting, but I didn't want to take up the whole page, so Gangle and Zooble it is!
Caine draws "human Gangle with a little top hat finally eating a slice of real melty pizza, his preference to hot" ironically, human Gangle is probably the one I had the hardest time with - I'm not great at actual people, bees and cartoon characters are way easier for me! also I'll keep it real, I fully forget if the human Gangle from this fic has a different design than canon human Gangle, so...it's just the canon design! or an approximation of it at least.
Gangle responds with "a disgusted human Gangle with a ribbon holding away a pizza box from the other Gangle" I had a lot of fun w the 'disgusted' face, and bc the other one has a top hat I figured the ribbon could be a bow holding back her hair.
then Caine "[draws] a block of ice around [the first Gangle]" I have no idea how to draw ice. save me, tiny snowflakes! you've been reliable visual indicators of temperature so far!
ngl, "bees and eyes and friends and everything" was def my favorite page. I had a lot of fun planning it!
my main goal was to keep in mind the sort of "call and response" style of the scene (Caine draws this, Gangle draws that). I wanted to be able to trace where their thoughts went - see the flow from start to finish, imagining who drew what in response to what.
that's also why there's a few written words, as well as some exclamations marks near certain doodles. I thought Caine could use exclamation marks as a sort of immediate reaction to whatever Gangle drew or wrote - some of the hearts serve a similar purpose.
one of my main inspirations was the sort of doodles my friends and I did during class in high school - just drawing for the sake of it, not worrying about a finished product or whether it was "good" or not. this is the reason for the stussy S, as well as the style of some of the eyes - the slit pupil one in particular was one of my go-to doodles.
another trend that was big when i was in high school was taking a group of characters and drawing just their eyes all stacked up on each other, to emphasize their differences. this is pretty easy for the digital circus, since everyone's avatars are so different, and worked out well for the "turn-taking" aspect - Gangle starts the top of the page with a pair of anime eyes, and Caine comes in underneath with a pair of naked eyeballs (which I thought would be appropriate given that both Kinger & Caine have alarmingly detailed eyeballs), and so on.
at the bottom there's a little pun I came up with - Caine notices the star-shaped eye-shines Gangle drew for Zooble's eyes, and gives it a shot himself. Gangle then draws an eye with a star-shaped pupil - bc he's her star pupil. badum tsssh.
i knew I wanted to bee-ify the rest of the cast the second i decided to even do any of this, so i had Gangle draw a daisy for them to take turns drawing bee-friends around! since Caine's bees are more simplified, i decided to make Gangle's more detailed, while still keeping the cartoon-y aspects of the gang's avatars. She [definitely not me] also tried out a new style with Pomni's, but it Did Not Work. c'est la vie!
since the first Caine Bee (near the top of the page) got kind of faded and you can't see his green-blue eyes bc pencil, Gangle decided to take another crack at it by giving him his actual head, and a more robust body. then to the left Caine tried to make a human!Gangle bee as a thank-you, and now we're at the word "gijinka"
i wanted to do a whole thing with Gangle drawing a cute beegirl and Caine drawing an absolute monstrosity, but the latter wound up being too big and complicated. SO! instead we have Gangle explaining the anime trope of anthropomorphizing non-human objects into cute lil characters by drawing a beegirl, and Caine seeing the outfit and going !!! i want that! can i be a beegirl??
finally, a closeup of Gangle getting ready to pummel the absolute shit out of Jax with a pillow (but alas, she is sleepy and could not finish the drawing)
bonus: the cut Caine beegirl designs and some closeups of my fav bees
honestly they slap, i'm proud of em, they're just too complicated to recreate on a smaller scale
i didn't intend for raga-bee to be looking directly at you like 'damn can you believe this shit?' but tbh i love it. the final king-bee is great too, but i love the energy of this one - you can hear the "oh?" this pom-bee turned out way nicer than the final one, jester hats are hard to draw lol
this is my magnum opus. it doesn't get better than this.
