I love characters that have never been loved before experiencing it for the first time. They're taken aback by softness. They're confused by warm words and being cared for. They're almost scared by the loving way they're looked at. Fleeting tender touches send them reeling. Their heart almost feel like it's going to burst. What does it mean? All they know is they don't feel as though they deserve that, even if they reciprocate. It's been proven time again that they're unlovable and yet...

Being treated so gently feels so good and they aren't sure they want it to stop.

It just hit me so hard that Hannibal was having the time of his life in Digestivo after being kidnapped and trussed up like livestock, yet was broken to the point of surrender by a few soft, cruel words from the mouth of the man he loves. While being threatened with a slow and painful death he was the happiest duckling imaginable; and while that mostly has to do with the fact that he’s, well, Hannibal, and ticked just about every box in his Super Fun Murder Times book, and also he still managed to maintain his dominance and control while naked and bound on his knees, there is a startling contrast between his emotional state before escaping with Will in his arms and after, when Will breaks up with him.

I mean, this is Hannibal’s face after Cordell explains how he is going to prepare his hands and feet for consumption:

and this is Hannibal’s face as Will tells him he never wants to see or think about him again:

And while Hannibal certainly doesn’t have a traditional perspective on life and death, I think it’s safe to say that for him the idea of continuing his life without Will in it is worse than the most painful of deaths.

I don’t know if this has been pointed out yet (probably) but I was just rewatching the last scene from DE and ALSHDNSISJ

I saw our lovely boi Gavin

and I was like huh,,, he looks,,, strangely stripped back,,,

AND THEN I F R E A K I N G REALIZED

HE’S WEARING THE ZEN GARDEN SHIRT

The shirt does appear to be more grayish in the final scene, but idk it looks pretty similar to me. The cut is the same and everything. However, real Gavin comes with problems, of course, he’s not a perfect program simulation like Zen!Gavin. So maybe the last shirt being light gray was on purpose to symbolize that.

And then I looked at Nines and

YOU GUYS THEY ARE BOTH WEARING THEIR ZEN GARDEN OUTFITS

This particularly struck me because at one point Zen!Gavin/Zevin was like “when is it gonna be time to have THIS (relationship) out there?”

And Nines was sad because he felt like he’d never truly get what he simulated in his brain out in the real world.

And then we get this beautiful final scene, a scene of closure and understanding of what their relationship means for the two of them, and they’re wearing their Zen Garden clothes because Nines is finally getting what he’d always hoped for, for Zen Garden Gavin to be real, or rather for real Gavin to fill that hole in his heart (er,,, thirium pump...)

Another observation, if I can add to this. Gavin is seen quite often throughout the film wearing his jacket, wearing layers, if you will. Layers mean walls. He doesn’t want Nines in. Each time Gavin is wearing one layer of clothing, he tends to have a “vulnerable” moment.

The bedroom scene, the gavin confession scene, the kiss scene, the last scene.

Backtracking to the kiss scene, Nines is wearing Gavin’s jacket. He’s been exposed to Gavin’s true intent and feelings, Gavin’s accepted them as it is (as much as he tried to deny them during That Scene). He let Nines in and being wrapped in Gavin’s jacket says as much.

I could be looking too much into this, but it was just an interesting thought my sleep deprived brain pointed out.
