Skip Google for Research
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
⁂
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
“Sensitive souls don’t have it easy in this cruel world. They feel like their souls are getting trampled on in so many ways. That’s why you see their eyes light up when they can caress a face or an animal, or breathe in the scent of a flower.”
— Sereno Sky, author of the Hippie novel “Lonely Traveller” (via hippieseurope)
Literally what is this body. (Menstrual health)
(Potentially endometriosis???)
Woke up, was getting ready for my interview when out of nowhere I start heaving, my body feeling like it’s drowning in heat. Nothing comes out, so I try the other way, still nothing. I can’t even stand at this point and fall to the ground gasping for air on the cold tile. Pain digging deeper into my core, air escaping me. I can’t stay still, im fucking thrashing on the ground attempting to avoid the pain. I get up again to try to throw up, or something , and at this point I actually start feeling scared. Im lightheaded and I try to send a “hey sorry I have have to cancel text” multiple times but every time I grab my phone I can’t even hold it let alone write something coherent.
I cycled through that for around 10 minutes. Standing, sitting, laying, shaking. I throw water on myself to try to snap out of it and cool my body down.
As I am in full panic mode I call my partner’s phone to no avail. At this point Im able to write a text to cancel the interview and tell my partner im sick. I barrel out of the bathroom, collapse on my bedroom floor. Lay there for a bit before eventually throwing myself in bed.
I wake up to my partners phone call. When I get out of bed, fully expecting to be covered in blood. There’s nothing. Just a dull ache.
I did have a decent amount of blood come out in an unusual manner is all Ill say. So im not sure if it just shed all at once and got stuck or something.
Like wtf was that? Has anyone else experienced this?
Is this a sign of endo?
Thankfully I already had an ultrasound scheduled today because Ive been having consistent upper right pain for years. So hopefully we can start finding some solutions.
My cats have this meow that means "please come with me to fix this" after which they'll lead me to the problem in question, usually a empty (or 'empty') food bowl or a closed door they want open. They look at the 'problem', they look back at me, clear message.
What fascinates me is how this illustrates what they percieve as being in the realm of my 'power.' I control the food, I control the door, sure, but my cats love to sit on the balcony in the sun, and it has happened plenty of times that on a rainy day they come get me, go to the balcony and show me... the rain. "Please fix this" they say. "Please get rid of the wet"
"Silly kitty," I say, "I can't control the rain." I then walk into the shower and turn on the rain.
huh.
online communities are so strange because people slip away so easily. you can be on here for years, folding people you've never met into the fabric of your daily life, and then they disappear, leaving only ghost posts scattered across tumblr behind. or their blog stays dormant, for weeks, months, years, until you're only still following them because you remember that they love sunflowers or they were kind to you when they didn't have to be or the last thing they posted was sad and raw and you still worry about them sometimes.
and sometimes they come back when you least expect it, years later, even, and there's this sudden rush of relief like there you are, there you are, even though you barely knew each other.
there's a strange kind of love to it. i don't know you and i want to hold your hand across miles and time zones and oceans. i can still see the imprint of you in this community you left. you don't anyone will notice or care when you're gone, but we notice and we care and we wish you well.
i hope you're all okay out there. i hope the sun is shining on your face and you are breathing deeply. i miss you.
