(Shes a snow leopard shift btw, i dont know how i ddint bring that up)
The reason Aurora lives with Xavier despite not being a student at damn is because of their parents. When Xavier got his powers their parents were ecstatic
"Look at our son, he's going to be a respectable man one day"
They could barely wait the 3 years it took for Aurora to hit puberty, but when she did.
A shifter. A rare shifter, one of the rarest but a shifter none the less.
They didn't try hard to hide their disappointment and disgust. What would others think of their family? One of their children being practically a pet. A thing that walks on fours and can't speak, how disgraceful.
They hated Aurora for what she was, only barely masking it for the sake of their golden child, who loved his sister the moment she was born and a little fur wasn't going to change that.
So when Xavier went off to college, Aurora was left with no barrier between her and her parents constant comments
No one likes a messy girl
Don't you dare bring it up
'It' was her powers. Or lack thereof in their eyes. Not only was she just an animal now, she couldn't make up for her shortcomings by learning a "better"magic. She could only sit there and hope they could find someone that'd be willing to marry a dog.
Until... Xavier came home for week.
Xavier unfortunately had faith that his parents could be adults and treat his sister, their daughter, with respect while he was away. He didn't expect a 180 in their behavior but he hoped none the less.
But when he walk though the door Aurora looked like a different person.
In the chaos of holiday prep and excitement of their golden child coming home, their parents made no thought of leaving the siblings alone with each other.
"What did that do to you?" Xavier gently, but firmly held his sister's shoulders. Aurora couldn't met his eyes,
"It's nothing, they want me to look nice. Try to get people to think I'm pretty."
Xavier felt cold horror seep through him.
They had dyed her hair. Her beautiful slate hair she had been sporting since 13, the color that matched her shifted coat, the color that only got lighter with age, the color she loved because,
"Normal black hair it too boring"
Seemingly to match their and his own hair, but it was the unnatural kind of black. The kind with greenish undertones and a subtle unevenness where it was haphazardly layered on with the hope of hiding something disgraceful.
The black clashed with her skin, Xavier could see where the dye had irritated it. Her body's feeble attempt at rejecting the foreign pollution.
"Why-why didnt you tell me? Have they done anything else!?"
Xavier's voice raised from the emotion he was feeling. Aurora flinched lightly but responded, quieter.
"I, didn't wanna bother you. You were at school and have practice and studies and friends, you dont need to be worring about me."
Aurora stated it so casually, if they were willing to do this, what else had they done? What had they said to make her so unfazed by stripping away something so vital to her just months ago?
Xavier didn't wait. He told Aurora to pack a bag, only essentials he'd come back another time.
By the time their parents thought to look for them, they were a spec in the sunset.
