You remember the early days of trying to fulfill the shoes of Flash, running around playing superhero. Despite that constant on the go and the ability not to slow down, there was a moment you could remembered fondly— When The Bat and his Robin would visit Central City to clean up whatever mess a C-tier villain left behind. You find yourself looking back on those times where a teasing Robin would come in with his fists ablazing as he mouthed loudly meanwhile Batman would just scold him under his breath and exhale heavily.
During that time you remember going around with Jason as the two of you giggled loudly before your guardians would call you two back. You remember him to be more standoffish towards kids his age, yet he was never like that towards you. Both of you would go to each other’s cities and watch movies late into the night where the sky would go from a pitch black to a faint blue with hints of white across the sky.
And with time, after late night Star Wars binge sessions and just talking in your room as the two of you sat on the floor, you had developed a crush on Jason— not just a small crush but anytime he’d smile at you, you’d practically melt like putty into his hand before going back and excitingly yapping while you gestured crazily.
Ultimately that time was cut short when you, who was 19 at the time, got the call from his older brother, Dick whose voice was raw and broken when he informed you that Jason got killed by the joker. You wept loudly while your dad held you tightly into his arms. The funeral was a blur with gloomy skies and speeches from people who weren’t there for him at all, not for his recounts of Crime Alley with his face twisted in sadness, his frustrated rants about Bruce at three in the morning, absolutely none of that.
You sat there and for the first time you had slowed down and sat with racing thoughts but no actions. Time had flown by, and you had taken on the mantle of the Flash, doing whatever you could to help your hometown now that you were this persona. Flashing— no pun intended, a smile while you ran on pure adrenaline and jokes while you kept the city safe. There were moments behind closed doors, where you’d break down in tears and sob into your hands as you thought back on that boy, you once knew and loved, who had died violently and terrified. But of course, Central City’s golden girl couldn’t break so after those mental breakdowns you’d get called back in and dashed right out of your home and back onto those streets.
On a random night, you came back from a late patrol with your mask halfway off your face and a dark bruise colored your jaw as you gritted your teeth. Before you had flopped onto the couch you had for two years but is showing signs of dilapidation and dipping down because of your weight. You could feel yourself succumbing to the exhaustion of the late patrol and your eyes slipped shut. Just as your brain slowed down a sharp knock filled the apartment, cursing outloud you pulled yourself up and trudged over to the door. You thought it was the middle aged man who constantly complained about your ‘heavy’ steps and the constant pitter patter. “Look sir, I can’t help that we have thin—“ You cut yourself off as you looked up and a bulky man stood there, a breath catching as you recognized who he looked exactly like; long, dark curls over his forehead with a silver streak, a nose with a specific bump in the middle, now green eyes instead of the dark ocean blue, and a j-shaped scar adorned his cheek. You felt sick and dizzy, stepping back as your mouth opened and closed like a fish, no words leaving your lips as you slapped a hand over your mouth, tears threatening to spill over.
“Hey, Zippy..” The nickname came from the time when you began brainstorming a vigilante name for yourself and the name popped up, Jason immediately burst out into laughter to the point that you two started crying. You just stared at him before you blinked quickly, tears rolling down your cheeks before you launched yourself into his arm while Jason stood there with a tired smile on his face.
“Jay— how? Oh gosh, you were in a casket.. What the hell are you doing here..!” You demanded, swatting his shoulder as he grumbled under his breath. “I can’t go back to Bruce.. not right now.” He said, his jaw clenched tightly as Jason looked off before he focused back on you. “Can I just— stay?” He mumbled softly, looking at you expecting a no or for you to curse him out for being gone for so, so long. But three words left your lips, that left him in a shock and a bit breathless. “Of course, Jason..”
It’s been a month and two weeks since Jason walked up to your doorstep and asked to stay with you, and so far you two have fallen into a routine together. You wake up, do your daily workouts, change into your suit to patrol the city, and all while Jason is still sleeping on the couch. He hasn’t really opened up about his plans for Bruce and the rest of the Batfamily, but you can see the pain on his face as he watches the latest news about the “new” Robin that’s shown up with Batman. You’ve still stuck beside Jason, from comforting him through his nightmares that left him in a cold sweat bringing him take-out late night from the place you two would scarf down when you were adolescences. The crush on him had flared up and in a way had increased with him, practically living with you in the apartment.
He decided to become the Red Hood, you stayed with him. Of course you didn’t agree with his methods of handling his issues, but you didn’t ridicule him for it.
Jason came back from Gotham City and he plopped down beside you on the couch with a soft groan as he clutched his side harshly. You came to him and gestured to the hand before he let out a sharp exhale as he breathed out and pulled his hand off. “It’s not as bad as it looks—“ Jason took in a breath when you took off his jacket and pulled up the compression tee, blood pouring out of his wound. You got up and went to the bathroom cabinet and pulled out a first aid kit, before sitting back down to work on his wounds while you dabbed rubbing alcohol onto his torso, he sucked in a breath.
Jason sat there, unsure and trying to keep face while he bit at the inside of his cheek. “Have you ever felt— y’know unable to control yourself, or your surroundings..?” He asked slowly, his eyes set on the ground before him as he clenched his fist against his side.
You lifted your hand before letting out a sigh and continued to dress the wound. “I’ve felt like that my whole life.. Even with being the star of Central City, I do so much impulsive stuff and say shit I don’t know if mean half the time.. It’s something that I’m still learning to control to this day, there’s moments where I slip and I can’t reverse it— All I remind myself is that I’m human.. I’m going to make mistakes and that’s okay.” You lifting your head and smiled wearily before glancing back down, wrapping bandages around his torso firmly.
“Zippy, you don’t have to do this— I’ve done this myself countless times.” Jason’s eyes were a particular shade of green as his hands trembled and his face set into a sharp, yet an uncomfortable look. “Jay, it’s okay, just let me.. Please?” He froze, before swallowing and he nodded his head. Jason relaxed a bit and loosened his shoulders. “Why are you doin’ this, Zip?” His tone caused you to pause before looking up and seeing his expression, your heart raced while you heard your pulse thrum in your ears. “It’s because I like you, Jason.. I always have, ever since you smiled at me with the gap in your teeth, ever since we sat on top of the roof and you ranted about living in the Manor with Bruce— I’ve liked since I’ve met you, Jay.” “Zippy..” Jason said, sitting up as he tried to get your attention. “It’s made my knees felt like jelly and my face hurt from smiling..” He called again, resting a hand on your shoulder. “Zip.” “And I couldn’t tell you because I was terrified that we wouldn’t be friends anymore and you’d hate me for that I thought I would lose my best friend—“ “Zippy!” He raised his voice, snapping you out of your nervous ranting then your ears burnt from embarrassment. Before he let out an exhale and he looked at you. “I like you too, a lot actually..” Jason mumbled out, his hand sliding down to rest on top of yours. You felt the heat radiating off of him and noticed the pink flush that covered his whole body from head to toe. “You do..?” You said slowly, as if he’d pull the rug out from under you and say ‘Sike, I’m actually playing with your emotions!’
He nodded his head and gave your hand a squeeze. “Yes, I do..” You launched yourself to him as you wrapped your arms around his neck and gently pressed a kiss against his cheek. “Oh, Jay..” He pressed his hand against the small of your back for a moment before He let out a groan. “Angel, I appreciate the closeness but, I’m fifty percent sure my lungs are working overtime right now..”
