There was a look of genuine surprise in her expression. She couldn’t believe how easily he could cast aside the idea of killing or being killed. Perhaps it had something to do with the way they’d be raised. From the way they talked and dressed, it was obvious that they had different upbringings. Sometimes she couldn’t quite understand these greaser types. They were like a whole other subspecies of boys.  

❝ I’m scared of hurting people, too, ❞ she replied.  ❝ But not, like, physically. I worry that one day I’d say something really bad to someone and then I won’t be able to take it back. ❞  Pamela could relate to the fear of losing friends. At this point, though, she hadn’t made many yet, being the new kid and all. ❝ Dy- ing’s real scary ‘cause you don’t know what’s gonna happen to you afterwards. I think anything that’s got to do with the ‘unknown’ is pretty terrifying. ❞  

“i think i get what you’re sayin’.” johnny said slowly, the words hanging in the air for a moment as he thought about what she had said. he had never really worried about hurting somebody with his words, because who was there to hurt? the only people that he really cared about were the rest of his gang, and there wasn’t a thing in the world he could think of that would bring them down. pamela was quickly finding her way onto that list though, and he guessed he could understand the worry of hurting somebody like her.

he had been chewing on the skin around his fingernails, but his hands quickly dropped when he realized what he was doing. needing something to do though, he pulled out his pack of cigarettes, putting one between his lips as he offered pamela another. did she even smoke--? “i don’t think that sounds scary. it’d be gettin’ out of here, wouldn’t it?”

Dally wasn’t even thinking about the height issue right now. He was thinking about how close Johnny was to him; Dallas wasn’t an affectionate man. Violence breeds violence and that’s all he really knew — From his father, to the streets of New York, to here. Johnny was one of the few exceptions that didn’t get him wriggling away uncomfortably, although he remained stiff as ever. He held up his arms at an odd angle, patting the shorter Greaser on the shoulder blades a few times.

“Yeah, man.. Don’t worry about it.”  Dally’s fingers curled up in something of a jerk when he felt the kiss against his sternum; That.. certainly was new.  “Man, how many times have you pulled me outta a sleep cause your folks are bein’ pricks? You don’t gotta thank me every time. You’re not a bother.”  Okay, enough of this mushy crap. Dally nudged Johnny on the shoulder to signal that he was done with this hug, scratching awkwardly at the back of his head.  “You wanna go to the diner or something?”

johnny appreciated, at least, that he hadn’t been shoved away. he knew that dally wasn’t typically the most physical of guys, especially not in a situation like this, with a kid hanging off of him. they may not have been that far apart in age, but something about dally really made him feel small. not belittled, in any meaning of the word, but... not as good. not as strong, even after all that had happened in the past year or so.

“i’m gonna anyways.” he said as he pulled away, rubbing the back of his own neck. it didn’t matter how many times something like this happened, johnny would always be grateful beyond belief. to hear that he wasn’t a burden was a complete and utter relief though, no matter how many times his friends had told him before. that sort of reassurance meant the world to him. slowly, the corners of johnny’s lips quirked upwards in a small smile,  and he nodded. “yeah, sure.”

“naw, don’t worry. i don’t get sick.”really, johnny couldn’t remember the last time he hadbeen ill without an obvious reason behind it. recoveringfrom a fight was one thing, but the sniffles? no, he hadno idea when the last time he’d come down with anythinglike that was. he’d probably just tried to power through itanyways.“c’mon, i don’t mind takin’ care of you. really.”
