with betty white’s 99th birthday today, i was reminded of something that happened when i rewatched the golden girls during the 2020 quarantine. in an episode near the end of season four, the girls are discussing their futures and what to do as they continue to age. they vow to always care for one another, but one bit of dialogue stood out to me: a quote where rose (played by betty white) somberly asks what will happen when only one of them is left. after this, everyone goes quiet, as the realization that someone will inevitably be left to continue on alone sets in. taken on its own, this seems just like a normal quote in an episode of the show; however, now, more than 30 years after that episode aired, betty white is the only one of the golden girls left. bea, rue, and estelle all died between 2008 and 2010. a chill ran through my body when that line played in the episode. it’s nothing more than a coincidence, of course, but it’s eerie nonetheless.
