Jace looked up as Alec walked into the infirmary, smiling slightly as his eyes ran over his parabatai, cataloguing everything. "You look tired." He murmured, shifting just enough that Alec would be able to sit on the side of the bed, "I didn't get a chance to ask earlier, mostly because I was just glad you weren't asking me about Clary. Alec had been about to ask Jace how he was feeling, but his parabatai got there first, jabbing it home violently once again that Magnus had left him.
❝I’m fine.❞ he answered, too bitter, too cold to be true. Yet, it had to be true. He had to be the head of the Institute. He couldn’t mourn the fact that his heart had been ripped out, that he’d lost the man he loved more than his own life. He couldn’t think about the fact that refusing to feel it was dampening his own spirit, was probably the reason he hadn’t felt Jace get injured.
He couldn’t function if he didn’t block it out. He couldn’t breathe if he let it be true, even for a moment - and if he let that in, he would have to let the guilt in - the fact it was his fault that Magnus had left, and now it was his fault that he hadn’t known Jace needed him faster than he’d been coming.
❝I’m fine.❞ he repeated, staring at his lap.
Ignoring how much it hurt, Jace reached out and pulled Alec into a hug, letting him get through his denials without interrupting, then when he spoke it was a quiet and firm plea, “Talk to me.” They were words he’d spoken in the past, over and over, when Alec had gotten so twisted up within himself that he shut down like this. He knew that he wouldn’t get through to Alec with arguments or pleading, but a simple demand had the chance of reaching him.

Alec had just woken up to the weight of his parabatai on top of him, a satisfied noise escaping him as he attempted to untuck his hands from under the pillows, trapped by his weight.

Alec’s heart was broken, and he was drunk, and rife for bad decisions. No matter how many times he wrapped his arms around himself, it never felt like being held, and it never reached inside and warmed him where he’d gone cold. Drinking was double-edged. If he closed his eyes, he could imagine Magnus was waiting to laugh at him for the faces he pulled, but the problem was, he was disinclined to open his eyes, knowing that there would be no adorable laugh, no pet names, nothing.
Perhaps it was wrong to turn to Jace, but Alec had no one he’d risk his heart to but his parabatai in its fragile state. Waking the other boy up from a dead sleep, Alec pressed into a desperate kiss, gripping the pillow either side of his head. ❝Please…❞
Jace snapped awake from his unsettled sleep the moment that Alec settled over him, but his confused questioning stopped before it got a chance to begin with Alec’s lips on his. With how connected they had been since the problem with the adamas, Jace couldn’t tell if the pang he felt in his heart was his or Alec’s, his own sleep had been plagued with Alec’s heartbreak and being awake, it seemed, was little better.
When it broke, he brought his hands up and wrapped his arms around Alec, drawing him down into a tight embrace, one hand settling into his parabatai’s hair, “I’ve got you.” He murmured, trying to ignore that he was naked under the thin sheets that separated their bodies and that he was hard beneath it. “What do you need?” He asked, cautious and torn about whether he wanted Alec to continue what he’d started by kissing him. For now, all he could do was shiver slightly from Alec’s breath brushing over his collarbones, the skin always sensitive there, and wait for the answer.
