❝ you never gave a warning sign. (i gave so many signs.) ❞ — taylor swift, exile (feat. bon iver)
i’m going to write meta about this properly at some point or another but since i just watched 2.16 where valentine for some reason is referring to jace as ‘jace’ in his dairies:
i don’t really give a fuck about what valentine/the show does lmfao canon is merely a suggestion i do what i want so as far as i’m concerned jace only started calling himself that after arriving at the lightwoods’ and it has nothing whatsoever to do with valentine bye
hot take but jace being adopted doesn’t make him any less of a sibling to isabelle, alec, && max or a son to robert && maryse than they do each other. the fandom’s attitude towards jace’s relationship with them && how he’s somehow an outsider ( especially in the show’s season one where alec makes a point to tell jace that isabelle is his sister && not his ) really shows how they think biological children are above adopted children && it is honestly uncomfortable && heartbreaking.
For the love of…Jace was fostered, not adopted. He came to live with the Lightwoods because Michael and Robert where once parabatai. There wasn’t any adoption. “Taken in” does not equal adoption. And seriously, have you been in this fandom long? Have you even watched this show? This fandom is always saying that they are siblings. Although that’s mostly to harass and bully people like me (who ship Jalec) because I know they don’t give a shit about it beyond that.
It’s the show that makes it clear that there is a divide in the biological Lightwood children and Jace. Biggest tell? When Max woke up from his procedure, every single person was there, even Magnus but not Jace who was with Alec right before Alec rushed in the room. Other tells? Alec being the only one to know about Izzy’s addiction until much later. Izzy and Alec discussing about Max’s training without Jace around. Robert never having spoken two words to Jace during the entirety of three seasons. Maryse not being there with Jace after the owl. Alec, Izzy and Maryse not even noticing that Jace was acting different when he was possessed. And yes, how easily Alec could dismiss Jace in season one and how easily Maryse could do it in season 2. Those are just off the top off my head. Saying the word ‘brother’ endlessly doesn’t change all the actions above.
There’s a reason Jace felt like a stray. There’s a reason he felt their love was conditional. There’s a reason he is still so desperate for a family. They weren’t a good family to him. They loved him, yes and that’s great but he still felt like an outsider and there’s good reason for that. I remember reading a couple of posts by adopted children that they were uncomfortable watching because how Jace was being treated and honestly, I can’t blame them. I sometimes feel uncomfortable because how the show treated Jace’s involvement with the Lightwoods, while throwing around the word ‘family’.
Claiming that it’s “the fandom” when it’s literally “the canon” is the hottest take about this.
OP literally includes an example of where canon makes Jace an outsider. And it’s not the only time that it happened in canon that either Jace treats it like Isabelle is Alec’s sister, not is, or Alec treats it that way.
Then there’s, on top of what @nohumanbondthatcompares points out, also that hot mess where it was literally an entire whole-ass plotpoint of this show to make portrait how the Lightwood parents only accept Jace when he is convenient: the best Shadowhunter available, hard working. When he’s not…
…all of that is canon dialogue that happened in this show.
He’s invoncenient? Let’s make sure Max remembers that Jace is not part of the family. And with how old Max is? Imagine just how often he must have heard Maryse say that for him to believe it.
Telling Alec that Jace is a cancer? What mother does that?
Each and every Lightwood aside from Isabelle has wielded Jace’s status like a weapon in canon.
When Alec is angry with Jace, he lashes out by emphasizing that Isabelle is his sister and not Jace’s.
When Jace is literally wanted Dead or Alive, neither Maryse or Robert are worried about him, instead both of them abandon him and make sure that everyone knows that he isn’t a Lightwood, going as far as poisoning Max against Jace too so even Max can lash out at Jace about how he isn’t a Lightwood when he’s angry with Jace.
All of that is canon. Not fanon.
So… don’t act like the fandom is “bad evil uncomfortable”. Every single Jace Stan that I have ever met in this fandom who produces Jace-centric content puts a lot of emphasis into his relationship with the Lightwoods, so much more than canon actually does.
If Jace not being treated like family actually bothers you; go take that up with the show-writers, huh.
The finale includes Jace confessing to Clary that he’s spent the last 10+ years terrified that if he messes up in anyway the Lightwoods would cast him aside. Jace himself even seems apprehensive to call the Lightwoods his parents because of this. Even Izzy isn’t totally blameless saying Jace is “more like a brother” not “my brother” early in season one although she never says anything like it around him. It’s very clear throughout the series that the Lightwoods draw a line between themselves and Jace, and the fact Jace makes comments about the issue suggests this kind of treatment went on since he arrived at the institute.
CLIMON IS DEAD!!!!!!!!
A Thought, post 2.12
so we’re really as a fandom just gonna ignore that simon’s reaction to finding out izzy was going through addiction issues was to point her towards support groups (which was the right thing to do) but like three days after clary’s mom died his reaction was to pull out the rug from under her and completely change the terms of their relationship huh
few thoughts
definitely going to be writing jace again, as soon as i finish my rewatch of s2 so i can get back into his headspace (currently up to 2.11)
there’s gonna be a lot of canon adjustments, especially in verses intended to be open to shipping
i think i’m gonna be moving him to a new blog. i’m lazy and hate setting up new blogs but this one is a mess and there’s like... five people still around since i haven’t been active properly in like two years
i’ve been? thinking a lot today about? jace and parenthood? for some reason or another? so that’s def going on
jace and alec training!!! jace v pointedly refusing a hug from simon!!! jace punching valentine in the face!!! jace seeking comfort from alec!!!!
2.11 is so much better to me than 2.10
hi i love jace more than anything in this life
idek how many of you lovely people are still around and active on your blogs but for anyone wondering i am still v much planning on coming back and i will as soon as i finish my rewatch of s2 so i can get back into jace’s headspace
i’ll about halfway through 2a but it is? v v v slow going because i do have Issues with a lot of what goes on this season in regards to jace and cl.imon ruins a lot of the rest of it for me so i? tend to pace myself with it a lot so i don’t get too annoyed lol
which means it’ll take at least a couple more weeks / months lol pray for me yall
hi i’m here i’ll be setting up this blog back up in the next few days and getting it up and running again hope yall are okay <3
ophelialived:
If he doesn’t want to face it, it isn’t on her. And so Astoria lets it lie; still, she thinks she should keep an eye on him. Still, she can’t help but be concerned. She understands complicated relationships with parents – she and her father are only recently getting along – but ‘complicated’ doesn’t begin to cover any of this. ( And she can’t help but think that there’s something wrong, something missing; Jocelyn Fairchild didn’t seem like the sort of woman to leave a child so unconcerned about her death. Granted, Astoria didn’t know her well, but she’s a good judge of character, always has been. )
“It’s only a matter of time until the Institute is back in Lightwood hands,” she confides. “The Clave is reacting now – trying to guarantee smooth sailing – and Aldertree gets results.” Not always in the right ways, not always with more allies than enemies. “He’ll make the decisions your family won’t. And when this is over, he’ll be transferred again. From what I can tell, there are no plans for this to be permanent – it’s not a guarantee, but I’ve seen plenty of transfers, and I’m sure I’ll see plenty more.”
His concern is sweet; she smiles, shrugging one shoulder. “New York is beautiful,” she tells him, “and I’ve traveled plenty of times before this. My family is only a portal away if I want to see them, but we’re not often together, anyway. We all enjoy the movement – me included. And there are worse places to be assigned. Why?” She raises an eyebrow, amused, teasing. “Do you mind me being here?”
“Well, you’re not wrong. I’ll certainly give Aldertree this--he’ll definitely make decisions my family wouldn’t,” Jace says, and if there’s some bitterness in his voice--well, who can blame him? He doubts anyone expects him to have any sort of warm and fuzzy feelings towards Aldertree. He doubts they will ever even stand each other, let alone be anything resembling friends.
“Still, I suppose we can all stand the current situation if, as you say, it is only temporary.” He’s not completely sure he believes. And even if he does--there will be a difference between what she believes to be true and what actually is true. Still, he can hope, can’t he? He doesn’t have much left besides hope. “If he doesn’t decide to stay.”
He doesn’t know why Aldertree would. It’s not like he has any friends here--though again, he doesn’t strike Jace as the type to have friends anywhere. Astoria, though. She’s a lot more charming on her worst day than Aldtertree in his best day. Which, perhaps, is all the more reason to be wary of her. “No, I don’t mind. I’m not super fond of the company you keep--” Meaning Aldertree. “--but none of us is perfect. Apart from me, of course.” He grins, lips curling up despite himself. “You’ll like New York, I think. It’s chaotic, but--you get used to it, after a while. We’d all et bored otherwise.”
willedivine:
@createdivine HAPPY BIRTHDAY
She’d considered a lot of options. There had been a leather jacket that she had come back to about a dozen times, and that’s in there, too – but it hadn’t been enough. Nothing she’d looked at had been enough, considering what they’ve been through in the past year alone. ( There’s no go-to gift, she’s learned, that says Happy birthday, I love you and I’m sorry we thought we were siblings for a little while and I’m glad we’re not. Nor is there a card that says that, and she couldn’t quite bring herself to say it to him out loud. )
When she knocks on his door, Clary is practically buzzing with excitement, and the moment it opens she sweeps into the room. She reaches out with her free hand to grab the front of his shirt, fingers curling in the fabric, and tug him closer to her – and then she’s simply smiling as widely as she can, almost too much to kiss him properly. Reluctantly, she pulls away from him, only far enough to speak.
“Happy birthday.”
And then she’s stepping back for real, shoving his gift into his hands – the jacket, a flattering style more for form than function ( even Shadowhunters deserve to look good on a day off ), and, in the bag beneath the jacket, a leather-bound journal of staff paper. ( She loves to listen to him play, loves watching him furrow his brow and scratch something idly on whatever paper he has nearby before returning his attention to the piano. )
“How busy are you today?”
“Morning,” Jace says, laughing as against her lips. “Have you been standing outside the door waiting to hear movement so you’d be here first thing in the morning right after I woke up?” Well, if she did at least she’s given him enough time to use the bathroom, which is nice of her considering how much he wants to kiss her.
Which he does, laughing against her lips, the moment she pulls back from him and he has no choice but to pull her close again. “Thank you,” he says, as he steps aside to let her into his room before kicking the door closed behind them. “Birthday present?” he asks, giving it a shake, though it makes no noise. He doesn’t waste any time unwrapping it, finding a lovely jacket and a staff paper journal. “Oh, this is so thoughtful,” he says. “And the jacket is lovely—should I put it on? Do a little catwalk for you?
“And I have a full day off, actually,” he replies, wrinkling his nose. “Alec has officially forbidden me from working today. Apparently he thinks I don’t spend enough time just lounging and doing nothing. Can you believe it?” He’s sure she can; how little time he spends resting is a common complaint of his friends. “Why do you ask? Do you have any special plans or do you just want to spoil me rotten? I’m good with either, for the record.”
@carelessgraces:
“How can you be prepared with fewer than four bags for a Christmas vacation? As my loving boyfriend you will of course be perfectly willing to carry them without a single complaint, but as my serious boyfriend whom I obviously love, you are allowed to make two comments teasing me while carrying my bags in, and another two while carrying my bags out. You will also,” Astoria adds, eyes twinkling and laughter audible in her voice, “continue telling me how great I am, for pretty much the rest of forever.”
Astoria takes a long drink of her coffee and considers. “Three months, then – we saw each other casually a few times over the summer, nothing you thought necessary to tell your grandmother, and we’d seen each other a few times last year, so falling in love fast is believable. And no, you can’t save me from a truee, I’m not a damsel in distress. Hmm – how about this? You came by my apartment when I’d twisted my ankle at the beginning of the semester and helped take care of me. After the third time you rescued my cat when she’d climbed on top of my bookcase, I was smitten. You get to be a gentleman and a hero, and I get to be a functional adult who happened to injure herself. Sounds good?”
"So this is how it starts," Jace whines dramatically. "You're taking advantage of my manly physique and giving spirit to make me carry everything for you. Not on, Astoria. Not on. Do you do this to all your manly and impossibly handsome boyfriends or am I a lucky exception? Because of said manly physique and all that." Could be worse, though, he supposes. Clothes aren't that heavy overall. She could be making him carry her books. Well. Come to think of it she probably is making him carry her books.
"Four teasing comments, though, I can handle that. And you have been pretty great, so I guess there are worse fates in the worlds than telling you how great you are until the end of time." He probably shouldn't be so open in telling her that, though. She'll only get more cocky. "Okay, yeah, that can work very well. Did I find you while you were down in the floor and carried you all the way to the hospital--all with windswept hair and a billowing white shirt, of course--or was it a simpler bringing-you-soup kind of thing?"
hiiii i’m here i’m alive how are yall doing???

That was weeks ago dude. Things change
call out post: jace needs lots of cuddles and affection and love and he’s getting none of those things tho really the reason he’s not geting them is because i’m not here so, really, call out post at self
