In 1983, Tony Ching Siu-Tung directed his first film and while others (like Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen) were focusing more on modern kickboxing-style stuff, he decided to go for a more traditional swordplay film. And in doing so, he made one of the best wuxia films ever made (in my opinion). Duel to the Death is known for its classic final fight scene…and it is definitely classic. But no one ever brings this fight scene up and I love it. Two swordsmen…in a forest…against a million ninjas? What’s not to love? And for an 80′s film, it still looks like the bee’s knees. This is as close to a live action anime as you’ll get from the 80′s. It feels very Ninja Scroll-ish. It’s not trying to be artsy like some modern swordplay films. It’s just straight up cool as shit. Sadly, this film is 40 quid on Amazon.co.uk (here) and $30 on Amazon.com (here) but I being you good news! It’s free on Prime Video. For those of you only dabbling with kung fu films, I recommend this one as a nice slice of swordplay. It’s entirely unpretentious and might open your eyes yo the wuxia sub genre.

Batuque 

A manga about a young girl who becomes interested in capoeira after meeting a mysterious homeless man.

A new manga by Tokio Sako who is best known for his Usogui series. I haven’t gotten into Usogui but would like to revisit it someday. In the mean time I’m enjoying Sako’s impressive artwork applied to the fluid movement of martial arts. I think it’s an interesting choice starting the protagonist so young but I like it so far.

Will keep reading more in Young Jump.
