Damn you, damn you to hell. Gary hates you, no–he despises you. You, who always treat him like one of the guys, have no business being so sweet to him. He hates it, really. He can’t stand the way you’re so welcoming to him. People are going to start rumors and already that most of the school hates him, Gary doesn’t need this shit at all.

So he keeps you at a distance.

Would it be nice to finally have a friend who he could confide in? Yes. But Gary isn’t into guys…he’s not into having friends either. It’s a dumb idea to begin with. And he’s pretty damn sure it’s a trick. You were going to say “tough luck, Barkovitch. Nobody wants you around!” and it was going to absolutely wreck him.

Yet every time you smile at him, and every time you say hi to him, it makes something shift inside of him. Warmth blossoms in his chest, and while he does everything he can to push it away, it always seems to bubble up from sort of depth inside of him. How dare you make him feel any kind of feelings of being welcomed in this place?

You were the worst type of person, he truly believed it. The moment your facade would fall and you’d have everyone see that you were just faking being friends with him would be his eventual downfall into nothingness. He has no friends, he has nobody to console him whenever he feels lonely. So Gary Barkovitch had to become crafty. 

The days of the young men in his grade bullying him would never truly be over. They’d always pick on him, some of them even resulting to violence and harassment against him. Barkovitch was lucky most days not to have the shit kicked out of him. Sometimes he prayed to God, asking for a good day. Not that he actually believed in God, but don’t let his meemaw hear that. She would be definitely disappointed in Gary, and that’s the last thing he wants.

It was pathetic. To have his grandmother be the only one who cared so much for him. His father saw nothing but disappointment, and his mother had died when he was young. He clings to photos of her, remembering the little bits of memory he has of her. The softness of her touch, her blonde hair and her sweet voice. That was all he could really remember.

At home, things are just as lonely and sad. Gary doesn’t have anyone to confide in. He doesn’t want to worry his grandmother either. He doesn’t really want her to know the extent of what happens in school. She’s not dumb though, especially when Gary comes home with a black eye or bruises. She tries not to press the issue, knowing it’s a sore spot for Gary and his father.

So it’s a similar thing when he brings you home. She tries her best not to make a fuss, but she’s so happy to see that he has a friend. Realistically, this was just because you two have a project to work on and he still doesn’t trust you. He introduces you to her, and then the two of you duck into his bedroom.

You don’t sit on his bed just yet, wanting him to make the suggestion at first. Becoming Gary Barkovitch’s friend was a bit like trying to help a wounded animal. You had to make sure they knew they weren’t in any immediate danger before offering yourself to them. Gary was the same way, and you had been the one to suggest working together on the project somewhere private. He begrudgingly invited you over.

And in his bedroom, you get even more of an idea of who he is. Dark curtains keep the lighting to a minimum, scattered pictures tacked to the wall or sitting on the bedside table, and lots of ripped up posters of bands and movies he enjoys. He slumps on the bed, running his fingers through his shaggy hair. You notice he does that a lot.

“Well, you can sit.” He finally says.

You sit on his bed, noticing how soft it is. It smells like him in here, which is something you really enjoy. Gary was a very gorgeous guy, and you were very much attracted to him. It was something frowned upon in your community, to be attracted to the same sex, but you really didn’t care. You couldn’t help but fall in love with the awkward guy.

The two of you work on your project for a bit and you start to see him relax. He looks much better this way; Gary has a beautiful smile when he’s not tense. You love seeing him in his element too, knowing he must be pretty relaxed in his own little sanctuary. You lean closer a few times to hear him better, and he doesn’t quite pull away. When your eyes meet, you know you have to find your moment to kiss him.

He’s feeling something stirring inside of him as well. Something that he keeps trying to push down, way down, but he’s failing miserably. Every time you look at him with that sweet look in your eyes, Gary knows he’s a goner. No more trying to hide it, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to be stubborn and push it all away.

And finally, when you lean in to kiss him, he pulls away violently.

“Don’t! Don’t fuckin’...I ain’t a fuckin’ f—”

But he stops himself because it’s not fair to say that word. It’s not kind, and you are being nothing but kind. You cup his cheeks and tenderly caress them with your thumbs. He’s melting and while he should hate it and run away from you, Gary Barkovitch melts into your touch like a needy cat.

“I like you a lot, Gary.” You confess softly.

“I know! I know…and I…I like you too,”

With that, you finally press your lips to his and he feels it. He feels that warmth and it fills up every little void inside of him. Nothing could ever feel as sweet as this. Will people talk and make fun of him and you? Yes…but damn, does it matter when someone has finally chosen him?

Gary decides that nothing matters but this right now. This very moment…
