WINTER FESTIVAL ARC CONTINUATION

(Context: The party continued on, and most people are thoroughly drunk by now, and asleep, barring some of the children and Delphi.)

By the eyeless gods, how extravagant did Rogal’s designs have to get?

Even the human-sized chambers of the Imperial Palace radiated a sort of above-you decadence. They weren’t like Fulgrim’s ships, of course — being there was an eyesore and a gut-sore alike — but they still seemed so… rich. Like the architectural equivalent of cheesecake.

Vida squeezed the water from her hair, stepping gingerly out of the bathtub and onto the cold tiled floor. She’d left the party once it began veering from holiday celebrations to her sisters- and brothers-in-law being drunken fools (specifically once Perturabo had brandished a table with her leftovers on it at Rogal over an argument). The pregnancy excuse worked wonders, but in truth, it felt quite lonely being one of the few sober ones there. By no means was Vida an alcoholic, of course, but she certainly enjoyed a few glasses, and cognac without a kick to it was like Sanguinius with no wings.

She padded across the floor to the closet, tugging on a soft nightgown over her wet body and stretching for a moment; with a little spin for good measure, she was at least passably dry to hop into bed. The auto-dry system would have been more convenient, of course, but it felt so strange even now.

Horus and his boys had assured her often that that out of place feeling would end eventually, that she’d get acclimated to the life of an Imperial Consort, but the acceptance of her circumstances just wouldn’t stick. A wayward part of her heart was still stuck in the slums of Eternus, as stupid as it sounded.

Vida closed her eyes, pressing the soles of her feet into the stone floor. It was just a bit gritty in some places, enough that if she pretended, it could feel like the old and cracked asphalt of her childhood street. A few scrapes of her feet against the floor, and-

What am I doing?

Damn it, what was the use, anyway? This life was better than her childhood by any objective standard, it was stupidly obvious. Why was she still yearning?

Vida sighed, shoving open the bathroom door and stomping to the bed — a bit of drama was warranted. She was pregnant, and weren’t pregnant women more hormonal?

She flopped down onto the bed, snatching a stray dataslate and opening up her doc-hub. A better time than never to figure out more of those damned reports, as paperwork was always a thorn in Vida’s side…

but it was an even better time to figure out more plans for her future little one, since paperwork was considered a stupidly-sharp thorn for a reason. Vida scrolled through the baby-names and bets on the future gender—

(Horus would probably relent on Lilith over some Cthonian name after tonight, she thought, once he was good and hungover—)

and eventually opened the genetic reports. She was no scientist, but the doctors had sent her these for a reason, and they were more fun to read than consequence reports of the Luna Wolves’ foolish moments.

Each Primarch and their family had one residential wing in the innermost area of the palace, the rooms swiftly added on by Rogal Dorn once it was discovered that the Primarchs could, in fact, reproduce with women. In each room of Horus’ wing, someone was asleep.

Horus was incredibly wasted, since Primarch-grade alcohol was labeled as such for a reason, leaving him knocked out upon his sofa.

The Mournival were in Abaddon’s room, a drunken argument over some stolen holo-game turning into the Astartesian equivalent of a puppy pile once they’d all passed out drunk.

Lastly, little Khonsu was curled up in his own bed, cuddled up to a wolf plushie almost as old as he was. He wasn’t inebriated on more than an overdose of soda, because even the Primarchs have standards.

And that meant that nobody was awake to hear the footsteps in the hall. Nor could they hear Vida’s door swinging open.

Winter Festival Arc: Part One

𝘉𝘶𝘻𝘻- 𝘉𝘶𝘻𝘻-

“There we go!”

The screen flickered for a few moments before working again, taking one more slap before the video footage got to work. Chaya grinned. The whole Winter Festival holiday was usually awkward for her; usually, even her father and Ambrose would want her to participate, but she’d been able to squirrel herself away quickly enough.

It wasn’t that she *dis*liked hanging out with her cousins, or her uncles, but it was just… awkward. She never quite knew how to actually *do* social interactions, not when she was getting too much attention — her little cogitator project was at least something to talk about with her cousins, something that she wouldn’t get all tongue-tied and awkward about. Now, she at least hoped to find someone to-

“Chaya?”

Oh, no, *seriously?* Chaya turned as the door to her room swung open, revealing a familiar little girl: her sister, Ruth. Trailing behind her was Uncle Lorgar’s youngest grandson (she honestly wasn’t even sure if he counted as a cousin), Telemus, both holding newly-unwrapped presents.

“Chaya,” Ruth said. “Can you play with me and Telemus? I wanna play puzzle with you!”

“And then can we play trains?” Telemus added, holding up the box in his arms, a set of model trains. “Uncle Bo got this for me, but Phoebus and Circe don’t wanna play. They say trains are for babies.”

Well, *that* was certainly wrong, and Chaya knew it. She hopped off her chair, letting out a (slightly-exaggerated) sigh.

“Fine,” she said. “But promise that you won’t blame me if Dad or Uncle Lorgar find out you unwrapped gifts early?”

The two little children nodded, Ruth snatching Chaya’s hand and already dragging her off. Telemus didn’t follow immediately, though; he approached the cogitator desk, standing up on his tiptoes and looking over the strange device.

Chaya would *definitely* be mad if he messed with it. The whole set-up looked quite rare, like one of the artifacts his grandmother Elena would only let him look at, but not touch. The data-slates on her desk, on the other hand, definitely weren’t as rare. Telemus grabbed one off the desk, balancing it on the box of toy trains and hurrying off to follow Chaya and Ruth.

The winding halls of the Imperial Palace’s western wing towered high above the three children. Any other visitor would have gotten lost, but Chaya knew this area like the back of her hand, as did her cousins. She held Ruth and Telemus’ hands as they went, listening (or at least trying to look like she was listening) as they both rambled about their respective gifts.

Eventually, after Chaya had sworn her ears would bleed at any moment from the sheer volume of babble, they finally got to the gathering hall. Most other families wouldn’t have called it something so fancy, but there was no other term fitting the size; Uncle Rogal had built the thing big enough to hold both the long table that seated the entire family (and sometimes Malcador and a few Custodes), the cluster of couches and the pile that the gifts were in. Ruth and Telemus dragged her over to said pile, and as they unceremoniously plonked themselves on the ground, she followed.

Six hands began yanking at the fastenings on the puzzle box and the train set, unaware that the door had been left open.

Only a fool would have expected them not give in to their baser instincts and seek out what they most wanted. This was why the ancient had left the gifts for his grandchildren out purposefully. He sought to test their resolve, to see if youths spawned from the union of Primarch and Mortal bore more patience than mortal children. Opening the boxes, they would, of course, find nothing. These were merely a decoy, another part of the Emperor's grand scheme. "I see patience has alluded you." He spoke aloud, loud enough for all the children to hear.

They were a complication, but he could not expect his sons not to yearn for family as he once did. And unlike him, they would have the luxury of creating beings who were their peers without the several thousand year wait for genecraft to catch up with their ambitions for a legacy.

"Fear not, young ones. Your gifts shall come in due time."

The two younger children were more than startled at your sudden appearance, Ruth clinging to Chaya’s arm and Telemus definitely not yelping in surprise, no sir, no way /s. The little boy looked down at the empty box in his hands, his lower lip quivering slightly; yes, you’d promised the gifts would come later, but he’d still been very excited for his trains.

Chaya, at least, hadn’t been startled. She greeted you with a wave, peeling Ruth off her arm and patting her on the head.

“Do you know when everyone else will be here, Grandfather?” she asked. “I heard Uncle Fulgrim and Aunt Shivan will be here s-”

“Didn’t Uncle Fulgrim have a new baby?” Ruth piped up. “That’s why auntie was sick for a while, Camilla said that.”

“Can I show the new baby my trains when I get them?” Telemus asked.

Chaya bit back a remark on how she doubted that a baby would like trains very much as one of the doors of the gathering hall swung open; her aunt Mathilde had arrived, Peregrine and Cædmon trailing behind her, the latter nearly vibrating with excitement.

(The Lion was conspicuously absent, she noted, but it wouldn’t do to actually *say* that — Ambrose had taught her well about social conduct, when she’d listened to him.)

"Your fathers will appear in due time. The Festival of Terran Winter begins on the morrow. It is a time of peace and celebration, a taste of what is to come when the age of prosperity for all mankind is reached. The gifts you will receive tonight will be paltry in comparison to the glory that awaits us in the near future, dear ones. Walk with me." Said the Emperor, motioning for his beloved grandchildren to follow. What they were so blissfully unaware of was that this Festival was going to be different from all others, an not in any way that was remotely pleasant. The scent of blood drifted through the web of fate, the portent of a murder. It was unfortunate, but necessary, should the ancient actually want his schemes to come to glorious fruition. Thousands of lifetimes of planning were on the line, and all it would take to steer them away from devastating failure was a sacrifice.

Chaya let herself drift back slightly as the others followed you, watching the slowly-growing gaggle of her various cousins gang up. The grandchildren each loved their grandfather, as did she, but… something felt strange.

Chaya was no psyker (not to her knowledge, at least), but as she watched you, she could almost see something just *off.* Like a man about to have a tooth removed without anesthetic.

The girl was torn from her thoughts, though, as they entered the dining hall and a familiar dark-haired girl collided with her in a hug.

“Alakhai!” “Chaya!”

The two girls laughed as Chaya swept Alakhai up, her jaw clenching slightly as she lifted the girl off her feet. Little Tolui followed after, the six-year-old nearly climbing up Chaya before Alakhai helped balance him on her bony hip.

The dining room filled with the rest of the Primarchs, their wives and children. Chaya shifted Tolui onto her back, tossing out greetings and nods (and a joking salute when she saw Circe; the girl was in Guard training, or at least considering it, despite fortune making it so she’d never have to work again) up till she reached Vida.

Vida was her favorite of all her aunts, by far. The woman was Uncle Horus’ wife, and even though her father hated Horus (even little Ruth knew it), he certainly didn’t hate Vida. The woman was always kind, if a bit of a loudmouth, and often had candies hidden in her various pockets; it was rumored once that she even won against one of Uncle Horus’ Mournival in a sparring match, though she’d met Ezekyle Abaddon, and the Luna Wolf would always insist he’d been going easy on her.

As Vida saw her, the petite woman tossed a strawberry candy to Chaya; before she could catch it, Tolui caught it between his teeth, snickering as he unwrapped it. *Little thief,* Chaya thought affectionately. Vida clapped her on the shoulder.

“Chaya!” the woman greeted. “How’ve your lessons been, kiddo?”

Chaya shrugged. “Good. Ambrose is helping me with the literature stuff. He’s got some old books from ‘fore the Unification Wars.”

Chaya held back a grimace at the slight twinge in Vida’s smile, wondering how she’d messed up. Was it calling her stepfather by his first name? Adults didn’t seem to like that. She glanced back over at Ambrose, where the man was chatting politely with her uncle Roboute’s wife, Maeve.

“I’ll have to borrow some of those off him,” Vida said. “Don’t tell Ezekyle if you see him, little bird, but I’m trying to figure out just what could actually get him to read for once.”

Chaya snickered, but Tolui huffed in annoyance.

“There’s another secret!” the little boy said. At Vida’s confused look, he pointed at her stomach; as Chaya looked, she could see the slight swell of… a pregnancy?

“You’re-”

Vida hushed her, a smile breaking across her face like waves on a shore.

“Horus and I are keeping it secret, little bird,” she half-whispered. “The baby girl will be born before the next Winter Festival, though. He wants it to be a surprise; apparently most of your uncles never thought he wouldn’t even be able to father a little girl.”

Over by you, the pleasantries were disrupted as two of your brood of grandchildren ran up to you: Theseus and Aliya, the son and daughter of Perturabo and Rogal, respectively. The two were holding a large wrapped box, barely able to support it.

“Grandpa!” Theseus said, giddy with excitement. “We have a plan!”

“My mom made this for Dad and Uncle Bo,” Aliya said. “We have a hypothesis.”

As it turns out, the hypothesis was that once Rogal and Perturabo were both blasted with Primarch-grade alcohol, they might be willing to build a model of the Ullanor battle together.

He sought to test their resolve, to see if youths spawned from the union of Primarch and Mortal bore more patience than mortal children. Opening the boxes, they would, of course, find nothing. These were merely a decoy, another part of the Emperor's grand scheme. "I see patience has alluded you." He spoke aloud, loud enough for all the children to hear.

They were a complication, but he could not expect his sons not to yearn for family as he once did. And unlike him, they would have the luxury of creating beings who were their peers without the several thousand year wait for genecraft to catch up with their ambitions for a legacy.

"Fear not, young ones. Your gifts shall come in due time."

The two younger children were more than startled at your sudden appearance, Ruth clinging to Chaya’s arm and Telemus definitely not yelping in surprise, no sir, no way /s. The little boy looked down at the empty box in his hands, his lower lip quivering slightly; yes, you’d promised the gifts would come later, but he’d still been very excited for his trains.

Chaya, at least, hadn’t been startled. She greeted you with a wave, peeling Ruth off her arm and patting her on the head.

“Do you know when everyone else will be here, Grandfather?” she asked. “I heard Uncle Fulgrim and Aunt Shivan will be here s-”

“Didn’t Uncle Fulgrim have a new baby?” Ruth piped up. “That’s why auntie was sick for a while, Camilla said that.”

“Can I show the new baby my trains when I get them?” Telemus asked.

Chaya bit back a remark on how she doubted that a baby would like trains very much as one of the doors of the gathering hall swung open; her aunt Mathilde had arrived, Peregrine and Cædmon trailing behind her, the latter nearly vibrating with excitement.

(The Lion was conspicuously absent, she noted, but it wouldn’t do to actually *say* that — Ambrose had taught her well about social conduct, when she’d listened to him.)

Winter Festival Arc: Part One

𝘉𝘶𝘻𝘻- 𝘉𝘶𝘻𝘻-

“There we go!”

The screen flickered for a few moments before working again, taking one more slap before the video footage got to work. Chaya grinned. The whole Winter Festival holiday was usually awkward for her; usually, even her father and Ambrose would want her to participate, but she’d been able to squirrel herself away quickly enough.

It wasn’t that she *dis*liked hanging out with her cousins, or her uncles, but it was just… awkward. She never quite knew how to actually *do* social interactions, not when she was getting too much attention — her little cogitator project was at least something to talk about with her cousins, something that she wouldn’t get all tongue-tied and awkward about. Now, she at least hoped to find someone to-

“Chaya?”

Oh, no, *seriously?* Chaya turned as the door to her room swung open, revealing a familiar little girl: her sister, Ruth. Trailing behind her was Uncle Lorgar’s youngest grandson (she honestly wasn’t even sure if he counted as a cousin), Telemus, both holding newly-unwrapped presents.

“Chaya,” Ruth said. “Can you play with me and Telemus? I wanna play puzzle with you!”

“And then can we play trains?” Telemus added, holding up the box in his arms, a set of model trains. “Uncle Bo got this for me, but Phoebus and Circe don’t wanna play. They say trains are for babies.”

Well, *that* was certainly wrong, and Chaya knew it. She hopped off her chair, letting out a (slightly-exaggerated) sigh.

“Fine,” she said. “But promise that you won’t blame me if Dad or Uncle Lorgar find out you unwrapped gifts early?”

The two little children nodded, Ruth snatching Chaya’s hand and already dragging her off. Telemus didn’t follow immediately, though; he approached the cogitator desk, standing up on his tiptoes and looking over the strange device.

Chaya would *definitely* be mad if he messed with it. The whole set-up looked quite rare, like one of the artifacts his grandmother Elena would only let him look at, but not touch. The data-slates on her desk, on the other hand, definitely weren’t as rare. Telemus grabbed one off the desk, balancing it on the box of toy trains and hurrying off to follow Chaya and Ruth.

The winding halls of the Imperial Palace’s western wing towered high above the three children. Any other visitor would have gotten lost, but Chaya knew this area like the back of her hand, as did her cousins. She held Ruth and Telemus’ hands as they went, listening (or at least trying to look like she was listening) as they both rambled about their respective gifts.

Eventually, after Chaya had sworn her ears would bleed at any moment from the sheer volume of babble, they finally got to the gathering hall. Most other families wouldn’t have called it something so fancy, but there was no other term fitting the size; Uncle Rogal had built the thing big enough to hold both the long table that seated the entire family (and sometimes Malcador and a few Custodes), the cluster of couches and the pile that the gifts were in. Ruth and Telemus dragged her over to said pile, and as they unceremoniously plonked themselves on the ground, she followed.

Six hands began yanking at the fastenings on the puzzle box and the train set, unaware that the door had been left open.

when aliya dorn found out she was a tube baby at the age of five, she cried at first because she thought her mom didn’t love her and that’s why she was grown instead of born. and then she terrified when she found out that her mother had replaced so much of her organs as a tech priestess that she couldn’t have kids, because she assumed she’d start growing metal organs (to be fair, she was five).
