maomao is my favorite "not like other girls" style protagonist bc for one shes a girls girl through and through. to the bone. and two she's just a weird little freak. absolute lunatic. they have the whole "omg she's actually beautiful and everyone falls for her when she's all made up" trope but the punchline is that she does not fucking want to look like that. she actively puts dirt on her face every day bc she does not want to be perceived as attractive (mostly out of fear of being used for sex work though at the same time she has the utmost respect for women who do sex work like she grew up in a brothel those are her sisters). she's Sherlock level smart and solves every mystery so fast but goes "well thats none of my business. anyway back to testing poisons on myself" she has the 2nd most powerful guy in the nation head over heels in love with her and is like "man this guy is weird around me what's his deal. I guess he's fine though because he gives me rare medicines and has no dick" fucking ICON i love her. also she once slapped someone so hard they fell on the floor. 10/10
Angst for breakfast people. Id like to imagine if MC dies and their last words are "was I good enough?" Should make you all cry or hug yourselves.
Because imagine someone youve seen as family (even though youre not related by blood) asks you that (doesbt have to be them dying hell no. Just a heart to heart question).
For me id cry and just hug them before I write a note for them to read later because I'm not good at words physically.
I wonder how the gang would react to an old MC who is slowly forgetting, losing memories yet not even recoiling when they show MC their monster forms again and again. MC would ask one of them (depending on who was with MC) if they were good enough after all these years.
Pierrot would possibly hug MC, gently comfort and tell them yes they were and would start trying to comfort MC more.
Harlequin would side hold MC and call MC a moron before he starts whispering in Portuguese to MC who, despite the memory loss, muscle memory of learning would automatically help MC understand Harley's words.
Ticket taker would just list what MC did and compares them with MCs mistakes, as if scolding MC before he comes to the conclusion of "possibly, who knows" which is basically yes.
Doctor would bluntly tell MC yes, gently hugging closely to be aware of MCs frail body. Then bring over what MC has gotten of made for doctor (thag he managed to save from several fires before).
Jester would just gently bonk MC on the head with a book he was reading then would basically just say anything except a yes.
Imagine an old MC who's spent their whole life gaining the trust of and getting closer with the troupe... Only to develop dementia and start screaming when they take their masks off...
The troupe tries to be understanding, but it still hurts that the one human who once accepted them for who they are now treats them like every other human does...
I know it's been less than a day but I had been just sitting on this comic for a while nervous to post it because of Pierrot having gotten too excited and hurting them, Spectre nervous about having to explain being misunderstood by readers, Doctor not horny, not explicitly explaining that it's not abuse.
So I kept going back to tweaking it, because while Spectre is supposed to be generally emotionally numb, at least early on, them having no/small facial expressions was difficult next to Doctor who has essentially none.
I'm actually really proud of the body language in this one, so I'm just so grateful for the response it has gotten! Thank you so much everyone!

I haven't managed to find much for Jester of Doctor. I found a Brazilian legend about a man who transformed into a tiny singing bird... but, you know... Doctor is big. Idk, let me know y'alls thoughts
Intro: Okay, so I've been studying and looking into Brazilian mythology a lot over the past few hours, but I decided to expand my search to South American myths as a whole, and even Mesoamerican as a stretch. After all, it's possible that certain species immigrated around at some point, right? I also decided to use the darkened silhouettes of the characters as a slight guide, even though I know they're inaccurate and might not be very helpful (per Neko's own words).
In the silhouette, Jester appears to look very snakelike, which makes sense given his pupil shape. It has also been confirmed that two of the circus members are very similar species wise, which means that he and Harlequin could both be some form of serpent. I also tried finding more research for Ticket Taker, because while a werewolf *might* make some sense since we know he's the closest to humans in term of species, I believe that it's more likely he looks human with noticeable monster characteristics. In the silhouette we can see that Bil used to have a horn or some type of protrusion from his head. Neko has confirmed that some of their body parts were removed while the circus was being abused, it's entirely possible that this was one of them. Anyways, sorry for the long intro, here's more theories...

Tuyango: "in regional South American lore, the tuyango is a monstrous, man-eating giant bird"
Romŝiwamnari: "forest and cave demons, known to the Xerente people of Tocantins, Brazil. They look like large birds with flabby, flightless bat's wings, armed with beaks like scissors. Their call is an eerie whistle"

I couldn't find anything that would remotely match Ticket Taker. He genuinely baffles me. The ones for Doctor and Jester are also a stretch. I feel like the one that makes the most sense to me is Boitatá for Harlequin.
But it's important to note that the crew is probably *inspired* or *based on* certain creatures of mythology, but that does not mean that the characters are exactly these creatures. This all just a theory as to what creatures they might be based on (to help us better understand what type of creatures they may be), if any at all. It's entirely possible and probable that Neko just made up new cryptids for the lore of the game. This was just for funsies (and I learned a lot in the process too 😋)
I would have done Columbina too, but we know even less about her than we do the other characters lol
