This has been going around my work and friend group on other platforms, and I thought it deserved a place here too.

Am I the only person who thought this was really fucking funny
A lot of the really funny moments in Lord of the Rings come from Tolkien playing with language like this, where we have relatively formal, archaic, “high” language responded to with informal, modern, “low” language.
another hilarious example:
my absolute favorite example of tolkien switching registers in this way is
That’s, like, what the hobbits are for. Tolkien uses them to punctuate and deflate his own saga-riffic language and ground things back to a modern audience.
the word for this shifting of registers for comic effect is ‘bathos’, if anyone wanted to know

Darling, listen to me.I made my choice. Duty to my country over love. It’s what I’ve always done, it seems. It was drummed into me my whole life. Now I’ve lost the only man I ever really loved. Mia, I want you to make your choices as a woman. Don’t make the same mistakes I did.Make your own mistakes. There’ll be plenty of them, believe me. Now, you can go back into that church and get married, or you can walk away. Whatever choice you make, Iet it come from your heart.
