According to Aya Nishitani, the author of the original Megami Tensei novels, Akemi Nakajima's summoning demons without knowing which demon he summons reflects a Japanese tradition where gods (or rather kami, actually) are sought for guidance without knowing which god/kami comes forth. You don't really see this in Shin Megami Tensei much since most of the time you do know what demons you're trying to summon, and you store them for summoning, but it's kinda fun to think of the core MegaTen demon summoning concept maybe being rooted in a Japanese oracular custom.
