Talking when he should have been listening.
What's new there? It was the same old story, nothing changes. It was always going to be a matter of time before he said one word too many and to the wrong person, anyway. Words were thrown about with no fear of what consequences they might come with. Each word specifically picked and sentences meticulously constructed to ensure that they caused some form of insult or annoyance.
Lips curled into a tight, lopsided grin as he was hoisted up by the front of his trademark jacket. A jolt of excitement ran through him and it took almost all that he had to told in a manic laugh that was on the verge of tumbling passed his lips. Eyes were puffy from bruises and the coppery taste of blood flavoured his mouth.
What did he do to land him in this situation?

A job arrived for him at the office. It was nothing too tasking, rather it was fairly mundane and nothing out of the ordinary for the broker. Collecting information about a certain gang's doings and dealings and distributing his findings to their rival gang. The usual. Things, however, took a turn that would make things a little more interesting for him. The head of the gang he had been gathering dirt on had come to him with the same request as their rivals, blissfully unaware that the sly brunette was already working for his enemies. It wasn't the first time that the informant played both sides of the fence, but it had been a while since the last time he took that risk.
Cordially accepting the second job offer, he returned to work almost immediately, making himself friendly with a few gang members from each side, finding out tidbits here and there that he could pass on to the opposing mob. Extra work of course meant extra hours, spending many late nights in the office flicking through files and manipulating relationships through chatrooms and forums under various pseudonyms and aliases. Risky, yes, though it was sure to be more interesting than playing by the unspoken underground rules.
Business continued smoothly for little over a month and a half until disaster struck. The leader of the first gang that came to him caught wind of the broker's foul play, making sure to pay him a visit with intent of revenge. Caught and approached not far from his home and office, a bevy of burly mobsters impelled the duplicitous brunette into the nearest alleyway with no warning, the element of surprise working in their favour as they completely caught the usually-on-guard informant very much off guard.
But was he worried? Not one bit. Almost as swiftly as he was scurried into the ominous alley he had his trusty flickblade drawn and concealed behind his back. The maneuver went undetected by the thugs which called for a smug, cat-like grin to appear on a set of thin lips.
Now that he was armed with the only weapon that he had in his arsenal, the taunting began. Mocking how this had been going on right under their noses for weeks without them noticing, pointing out the scale of which he was so easily able to infiltrate and pick apart their organisation, his ulterior motives going completely undetected. Was it any wonder though? That was what he was known for. He closed in on them as they listened in silence to his ridicules, light steps taking him to circle one of the members.
His mocking eventually pushed the wrong button with one of the thugs which caused the stocky male that he had just paced around to lash a fist out, letting it find contact with his jaw.
Another jab landing on the opposite cheek. Then the others joined in, adding more hits and the occasional kick to the equation. His blade was dropped by accident once a fist came into sharp contact with his ribcage that was left exposed as an arm was raised to defend himself.
Which brings us back to the present. Hoisted up by his collar, face bloodied and already showing signs of trauma in the form of dark purple bruises. Though he was still grinning. What would it take to wipe the smug look from his face?
There was a quiet clink as the cold metal of his dropped knife scrapped off the damp concrete as it was picked up by one of the males involved before it was passed to their leader who had Izaya in his grasp. Maroon hues snapped down to his weapon as it traded hands with the enemy.
❝ Oh~ I see you've found my knife. I was looking for--
Voice was laboured as he struggled to speak, cut short as the sharp tip was pressed against the base of his throat. Lips curled into a grin as the mobster warned him not to speak another word, not believing there was any weight behind the threat, he wouldn't have the guts to try anything.
And just like that the tip against his throat was jammed forward by the trembling hand that was holding it and pulled sidewards to create a gaping wound on the brokers neck. The weapon was dropped as soon as the act was carried out, the clink it made with the ground echoing throughout the alleyway as all else went silent. Falling to his knees, Izaya dabbed a hand at the wound before bringing his hand out in front of his face to inspect the amount of blood on it. They actually did it. Not a second was wasted as the assailants stole off back to their head quarters, no doubt to report the events that just took place.
Weak fingers clasped around the familiar handle of his trusty blade as he entered into a fit of coughing, dots of blood spluttering the pavement before shakily finding his feet. His frame stumbled to find the nearest wall, using it as a pillar of support to help keep his weight up before beginning the struggle of a journey back to his apartment. It wasn't far, but in this condition the task seemed like a full marathon. His body was already beginning to cave in. Blood seeped through the gaps in his fingers as he held it against the laceration and pooled into the once beige fur of his sleeve, staining it in brilliant hues of scarlet.
Breathing at this point was also greatly difficult, breaths coming in short and shaky gasps, each sending a searing burn through his airways, the occasional cough and choke only adding to the agonising stinging. Then a tug on his jacket --
Weight turned as quickly as possible, a weak arm raising to place the knife that was still covered in his own blood against the throat of whoever it was that had approached him, ready to cause serious damage had it have been the men from earlier. His eyes, still puffy and bloodshot from the beating, locked on to an unknown figure as it was covered by shadows. A manic but tired laugh tumbles passed his lips as blurry vision recognises the figure to be Namie before his body gave in, letting his weight fall forward into hers though his free hand continued to clutch at the open cut.
He complied and held the material in place, hands feeling sticky from vital fluid that coated it. A pained groan was allowed as his weight was heaved over his secretary's shoulder, laughing as she ordered him not to die. Now at deaths doorstep, he wasn't sure if he feared it or not. Thoughts were delirious and he had a case of lightheadedness due to severe blood loss. Memory at this point turns hazy -- how he ended up in this state, who did it and why all becoming unclear.
Lids opened and glanced around using peripherals, catching sight of a familiar surrounding, before shutting them back over, the light beginning to sting his now sensitive vision. He was back in his apartment... His sense of hearing was also distorted as he couldn't make out who was talking or what was being said, everything sounding like it was underwater, though it slowly started to clear up. It was Namie yelling at someone, something about being stabbed and "not long left". The broker had another short coughing fit before a blanket of unconsciousness draped over him, slipping into a quiet and motionless state, somehow managing to maintain light breathing, enough to keep him alive.
Lids opened once more, this time however he wasn't in his apartment, though he did recognise his surroundings. It was a room in Shinra's flat. He was alive. That in itself was nothing short of a miracle. Lips curled into a savage smirk, mind already working at how he could extract revenge on the rats that did this to him. Fingers gingerly came up to inspect the damage on his neck, finding no gauze or bandages, just a stitched cut. The blood was dry and skin had already started to heal over. How long was he out for? A couple of days at least. Hands padded around looking for his jacket to find his phone, needing to check the time and date. It was still bright outside, around evening time. Unable to find his coat anywhere, enough energy was gathered to prop himself up on two shaky elbows, breathing now a much easier task than the last time he could remember consciousness. Namie's lab coat was draped over a chair in the corner of the room, her bag sitting next to if on the floor, his silver rings sitting on the bedside table next to him. No sight of his phone or knife anywhere.
After a wave of relief washed over him, he flopped back down into the plush pillow, hardly believing his luck as at one point he was almost certain that he was a goner. But here he was...
No matter how hard anyone tried, they couldn't kill him -- like a cockroach. In a croaky and gruff voice, he attempted to catch someone's attention with a few coughs.
