What time was he off?
Sometimes it didn’t occur to Regulus that there were people in Knockturn who didn’t recognize him as Orion Black’s son the second they saw him. Logically speaking, there had to be. Even in Knockturn, not everyone was intimately acquainted with the Black family or even the Syndicate in more than name. And Sybill would’ve had no reason to know, not when – as far as Regulus could tell – they had no modtech, no connection to the cartel, no reason to be involved with the Syndicate as anything more than a distant observer.
It wasn’t like he’d told them who he was, or even his last name.
But even knowing, logically, that that was the case, it took him by surprise that Sybill assumed he just worked at Kingfisher’s. Like he used to, before Sirius left.
“Late,” he said, with a shrug, as if it was a real answer. Honestly, he had no idea how long he’d be there tonight. Later than he’d like to, that was certain. “Must be nice, running your own shop. I’ll bet you get to leave whenever you want to at night, yeah?”
There were many kind of shops and restaurant that were open late a night. The Grim was one of those places but Sybill had been ready to leave the business to get something to eat. It was astounding to see other places open at such a late hour, though Sybill knew it was because other things happened at night.
Taking another sip of their water, Sybill chuckled before shrugging at Regulus. “Yes and no. I do get to leave whenever I want but I also have to leave my dear shop in capable hands. I once had a worker try to steal from the register when I left early.” They shook their head at the thought. “Real shame. I made my hiring policy a lot stricter after that.” Sybill wasn’t a very aggressive person, and when you own an establishment sometimes you need an iron fist. Sybill’s hand was a bit more watery and similar to jello. They actually had to get one of their managers to fire the worker after that since they cried at the thought of it.
“How long have you been working here?” Sybill smiled, changing the subject. The Kingfisher’s was established a long time ago and while Sybill wasn’t a regular, they don’t ever remembering seeing Regulus’s face around here. (Perhaps they forgot, but that was unlikely since they never forget a face. Unless they were drunk.)
