Her “disappearance” was also greatly exaggerated, she was under a lot of stress from the public and had just caught her first husband cheating on her, so she fucked off to a spa treatment hotel and checked in with a fake name as a “patient” claiming to not remember anything about her past. She kept up the illusion of mystery for most of her life, claiming to not know anything about what happened during that time, but in her twilight years she alluded to the fact that “of course I just ran away for a bit, wouldn’t you want to do the same?”

The thing about death of the author is I don't think you can apply it in ignorance. It's a deliberate choice you make. If you choose to reject the author's intent and substitute your own, you must first acknowledge what the author's intent was, and that means rejecting it says something about you. For a specific but nonspecific example, if you see a character that the author intends to be read as a transgender woman, and you go looking for a possible alternate interpretation... that's not a meaningless choice. Why are you rejecting that reason? What kind of person would?

It's just... I think this year's experiences for me have been a culmination of "so when CAN we talk about antiblackness?" Because every time you bring it up, it's treated as a conspiracy- because surely no one could Genuinely Care about something so Trivial when there are More Important Things at Stake!

And instead of just outright saying "we don't wanna hear you talk about it at all because we don't care/we benefit" (because that wouldn't fit the Good Person Image) it's always treated as bad timing or bad expression.

So when is the time. When will be a good time to talk about the increasingly overt and growing presence of the antiblackness in the room. Or is the enforced policing of Black voices the preferred state of things here, to maintain nonblack comfort at all costs. Bc I wish y'all would just say that instead of all this other shenaniganery.
